Anil Kumble backs Karnataka to shine

Former India captain Anil Kumble has backed his state side Karnataka to shine in the Ranji Trophy final against Mumbai beginning on January 11 in Mysore.

Cricinfo staff09-Jan-2010Former India legspinner and captain Anil Kumble has backed Karnataka, the state side he represented, to shine in the Ranji Trophy final against Mumbai beginning on January 11 in Mysore. Kumble led Karnataka to victory in the Rani Trophy in 1996, and they won the competition for two consecutive years in 1998 and 1999.”To be a part of the Ranji Trophy-winning team is a really big thing,” Kumble, who led Karnataka to the title in 1996, told . “I remember when we won in Chennai against Tamil Nadu, it was Karnataka’s first title win in 13 years. This time also, it’s quite similar – our last title came 11 seasons back.”To be the number one domestic team in the country is a great motivation. When you look back, it is certainly one of the top achievements. To win a Ranji Trophy means you have done consistently well over a period of time, over three months, against every team and in all conditions.”Karnataka qualified for the Ranji Trophy final by way of a first-innings lead against Uttar Pradesh, with Rahul Dravid scoring a double-century. Dravid will be unavailable for the final, for he’ll be joining the Indian squad in Bangladesh for a two-Test series that gets underway on January 17. “Rahul (Dravid) being there has been a huge factor, it has certainly helped the team’s cause,” Kumble said. The greatest thing is Rahul’s presence. Everybody looks up to him, and he has pushed the boys really hard.”To their credit, the younger lot has responded very well. The batsmen have been consistent all through, while the bowling has been exceptional. [Abhimanyu] Mithun and Vinay [R Vinay Kumar] have done brilliantly, [Sreenath] Arvind has been more than adequate and the old warhorse, Sunil Joshi, has been contributing as well.”It would have been great if Rahul had been part of the final,” Kumble noted. “The authorities should certainly have considered advancing the final by a day.”Kumble was particularly impressed with the performance of Abhimanyu Mithun, who grabbed four wickets to help bowl out UP for 208 in the semi-final and is currently the second-highest wicket-taker this season, behind R Vinay Kumar. “What is most heartening is the way Mithun has shaped up,” Kumble said. “We all knew he had the talent, he has been a part of the Royal Challengers set-up and he played in IPL II. It was always obvious that he had the pace, but the best part has been that he came in really raw, and has gone out, enjoyed himself and done consistently well. He picked up 11 wickets on debut and once you get those many wickets, the expectations are pretty high. He has not disappointed.”Mumbai, Karnataka’s opponents, have won the Ranji Trophy on 38 occasions and have lost just four tournament finals. Kumble admitted they would prove a formidable opposition. They have been there before,” he said. “They are a very determined lot, and they play well as a team.”They know how to come out of tight situations. I remember a couple of seasons back when then they had no points after the first three games, and yet they finished the season most strongly.”However, despite the huge challenge, Kumble advised the Karnataka players to treat the fixture as just another game. Not to think of it as a final, but as just another match,” he said. “Stick together, fight till the end. It is a five-day game, you must win every session and make it count.”It’s not just about the first-innings lead. Yes, you can win a game even after losing a couple of sessions because there is time to come back, but you need to seize the initiative early on. And build on it.”

Umpire Benson confirms retirement

The English umpire, Mark Benson, has confirmed his retirement from the ICC elite panel, and will see out his career on the county circuit

Cricinfo staff05-Feb-2010The English umpire, Mark Benson, has confirmed his retirement from the ICC elite panel, and will see out his career on the county circuit, following his sudden withdrawal from the Adelaide Test between Australia and West Indies in December.Benson hit the headlines on the opening day of the second Test on December 4, when he was reported to be upset over several incidents involving the Umpire Decision Review System, one of which led to his original decision against Shivnarine Chanderpaul being overturned. He withdrew from the contest and flew back to England while the match was still taking place, although the ICC later claimed his withdrawal had been on the grounds of ill-health.”I have enjoyed my time on the elite panel immensely,” said Benson in an ICC statement on Friday. “The opportunity to be part of the global game has given me memories that I will always treasure. But travel and being away from home takes its toll on the family and some warning bells have started to ring regarding my health.”So, having thought about it carefully, I feel now is the right time for me to step down and move to a more settled and familiar environment in England.”Although Benson’s contract was not due to expire until the end of June 2010, he asked if he could be released from it three months early so he could take up a contract with the ECB and this request was granted.”I’d like to thank the ICC and my umpiring colleagues on the elite panel for their support over the years,” added Benson. “Umpiring at the top level has been a very rewarding experience for me and it is not an easy decision to walk away from it but I believe it is the right one as far as my health and family are concerned.Vince van der Bijl, the ICC’s umpires’ and referees’ manager said: “Mark’s immense love for and enjoyment of cricket shines through his umpiring. His on-field calm demeanour will be missed, as will his friendly and easygoing disposition.”We fully understand and support his decision, which was brought on by a desire to spend more time in England with his family and some concerns about health issues. He will add richly to the county circuit as he is a talented and hugely experienced umpire and we wish him great success.”In total, Benson umpired 27 Tests, 72 ODIs and 19 T20Is, including the final of the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 final in Johannesburg in September 2007. He had been on the elite panel since 2006 and was offered a contract by the ECB to return to domestic cricket as a first-class umpire.

Spurs dealt potential injury blow vs Leeds

Antonio Conte could be dealt a major injury blow ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s clash with Leeds United this afternoon…

What’s the latest?

The Italian head coach will be sweating on the fitness of Giovani Lo Celso after the Argentina midfielder returned from international duty a little worse for wear.

“Giovani Lo Celso did not come back perfect physically,” revealed the Italian to reporters (via football.london).

“I do not know about him if he will be available. For sure [Cristian] Romero is not available, Lo Celso I don’t know. The rest of the team, we have all the players.”

Huge blow?

If the 25-year-old maestro is missing, then Conte will be hugely concerned heading into kickoff as he is already without Oliver Skipp, who is suspended for this clash, whilst fellow engine room enforcer Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg missed Denmark’s matches through injury.

To be without another middle man would be a massive blow as it leaves the 52-year-old with a plethora of out-of-favour stars in Harry Winks and Dele Alli to choose from.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-updates-transfers-antonio-conte-thfc” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Lo Celso, who is valued at €30m (£25m) by CIES Football Observatory, has only appeared from the bench in the two games under Conte, playing a total of 22 minutes but he could emerge as a key player for him in the future.

Not only is he capable of playing that inside-forward role behind Harry Kane but he is also one of the more creative players in the squad, even if he’s a little frustrating with his end product at times, having managed only eight goals and five assists since his arrival in summer 2019.

As per WhoScored, he leads the way for key passes per 90 (2.1), which is more than Heung-min Son (1.9), Lucas Moura (1.3) and last season’s assist king, Kane (0.9), too.

The Argentine playmaker was once dubbed “phenomenal” and backed to prove his worth to the team by former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho.

Having him available would make Conte’s team selection a whole lot easier, so if he is indeed absent, then the Italian could well be left gutted, even more so after already suffering a huge blow to Cristian Romero as well.

Dhoni blasts Chennai to semi-finals

A pumped-up MS Dhoni again showed why he’s one of the great finishers in the game to make Chennai Super Kings the only team to reach the semi-finals of each IPL so far

The Bulletin by Siddarth Ravindran18-Apr-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
MS Dhoni showed off his finishing skills again•Indian Premier LeagueA pumped-up MS Dhoni showed why he’s one of the great finishers in the game, blasting 30 runs in the final two overs to ensure Chennai Super Kings would contest an IPL semi-final for the third season in a row. Chennai’s chances seemed dim after Shaun Marsh’s sparkling innings had powered Kings XI Punjab to a massive total, but meaty innings from Suresh Raina and S Badrinath set the stage for a Dhoni onslaught during a tense finish.Punjab held the edge for most of the match, and going into the last two overs Chennai needed 29, a tough task even with Dhoni and Albie Morkel at the crease. Juan Theron had been a hero the last time the two teams met, but he couldn’t save Punjab in Dharamsala. The penultimate over, by Theron, started with two murderous hits for four from Dhoni, feasting on the length deliveries offered. He looked to repeat on the third ball, but a thick edge flew high and fast to wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara, who managed to get a glove on it. Theron kept it to singles for the rest of the over, leaving Chennai needing 16 off the last.Irfan Pathan had bowled the last six deliveries against Chennai at the MA Chidambaram as well, and he had kept them to nine runs to push that match into a Super Over. This time, though, he didn’t have a tailender like R Ashwin to bowl to; it was Dhoni, channeling the buccaneer spirit with which he made his name. The first delivery was almost a yorker, but Dhoni managed to power it wide of long off for four. The next was a slower one that he top-edged, but it landed short of long off and Chennai were two runs closer. The match was effectively sealed off the third delivery: a monstrous hit over wide long on sent the ball out of the ground, reducing the equation to four off three. Dhoni finished it with another thrash over long on, and the famously cool captain let out a roar and then punched the side of the helmet as the adrenaline flowed and his team-mates raced from the dug-out in joy.Chennai’s pursuit got off to a horror start when Ramesh Powar’s classic offspin bowling, tossing the ball up and keeping the pace down in un-Twenty20 fashion, accounted for the dangerous openers Matthew Hayden and M Vijay. From 26 for 2 in the fifth over, it was Raina who ignited the chase in company of Badrinath, promoted ahead of Dhoni. At least 11 runs came off each of the next six overs as Raina waded into the Punjab attack. The sixes kept raining until he was dismissed in the 10th over with a beautifully-timed hit to sweeper cover, similar to his exit in the previous match against Delhi Daredevils.Badrinath has had plenty of questions asked over his ability in limited-overs matches, and they resurfaced when he went scoreless for six deliveries after Raina’s fall. He broke that spell with a clean hit over long-off and a paddle-scoop over fine leg for four. There were a couple of close lbw calls against Piyush Chawla, but he kept the boundaries coming so that by the time he was stumped for 53 in the 17th over, his strike-rate was touching 150. After he fell, it was all about Dhoni, as Punjab’s inability to fire in yorkers hurt them yet again.Punjab had looked set to close out a forgettable season with a consolation win after they had been sent in. Mahela Jayawardene’s blistering cameo gave them a cracking start, and Sangakkara showed again that you could score at Twenty20 rate using orthodox cricketing strokes.Marsh was content to let the Sri Lankan stars make most of the runs in the first half of the innings, but once Chennai hit back with the big wickets of Sangakkara and Yuvraj Singh in successive overs, he brought out the clean hitting that got him runs by the wagonload in the inaugural season. He and Irfan amassed 99 runs in the last eight overs, and the Marsh blitz started with two sixes and two fours in six deliveries, during which he galloped from 39 to 58. A slog-sweep out of the stadium followed, and he clubbed Bollinger twice over the ropes in the 19th over.Irfan racked up 15 in the final over but that proved pointless in a match which was characteristic of Kings XI Punjab’s season: their batsmen piled on lots of runs but the limp bowling and awful fielding kept Sangakkara’s men at the foot of the table for almost the entire tournament.

Di Marzi drops Kessie to Spurs hint

Speaking on air (via Football Daily), reliable Sky Sports reporter Gianluca Di Marzio has dropped a live TV transfer hint involving AC Milan star Franck Kessie.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye Kessie swoop…

As per numerous reports, Tottenham are eyeing a move for the Ivory Coast international and reports suggested recently that it was actually advancing behind the scenes.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, as per La Gazzetta (via Get Italian Football News), the Lilywhites were said to be in very advanced talks to sign the 24-year-old on a pre-contract as his San Siro deal continues to wind down.

The Serie A giants risk losing Kessie on a free deal next summer and Spurs have been continuously tipped to be working on a move, as also explained by reporter Rudy Galetti.

The Latest: Lilywhites hint dropped…

Speaking on air (via Football Daily), Di Marzio doesn’t go that far but hints it may be possible in 2022, not in January.

When asked if Stefan de Vrij or Marcelo Brozovic could join Antonio Conte at Spurs, he refuted that possibility but refused to rule out a potential Kessie transfer.

“Kessie, not in January, but Kessie could be,” he explained.

“He’s not top, but he’s a very good player, but the philosophy of Tottenham is to get top young players so Brozovic and de Vrij are too old for this project.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

While Lilywhites supporters will arguably be gutted to miss out on de Vrij and Brozovic, they can take solace in the fact that Kessie could still be a possibility.

Lauded as ‘extraordinary’ by ESPN pundit Nicky Bandini, the Milan star has been a key player under manager Stefano Pioli – especially last season.

A natural defensive midfield player, Kessie still managed 13 goals and four assists in 36 Serie A starts last season – demonstrating a real prowess further forward.

Averaging a 92.2% pass accuracy in the Serie A this term, more than any Spurs player in the Premier League, he could be an ideal midfield presence to have under Conte with plenty of calmness and composure (WhoScored).

Barcelona are four points off the top of La LigaDrew with Rayo Vallecano at the weekendAncelotti insists Xavi's job should be safeWHAT HAPPENED?

Pressure has been mounting on Xavi after his Barcelona side struggled in recent weeks. Most recently, the Blaugrana dropped points to Rayo Vallecano, needing a late own goal to steal a scarcely-deserved draw. In response, Xavi took to the press to encourage his players to raise their levels.

In a press conference, the veteran manager asserted that Xavi won't have much difficulty getting his team back on track: "Xavi, like me, knows football very well, and there is criticism. Sometimes it can happen, but Xavi has the experience to manage all this. He knows the atmosphere (around Barca) and I think he has everything he needs to manage the situation."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

After winning the league title last season, Xavi's side are already slipping out of contention this campaign. They are in fourth, and four points off the top — with a crucial fixture against second-placed Girona coming up next month. The manager has addressed their slow run of late, while there have been scattered reports of "crisis talks" at the Barca training ground in recent weeks.
