Shahriar Nafees set to return

Shahriar Nafees is set to return to the Bangladesh A team for the four-day match against the West Indies’ High Performance Centre side from September 22

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Sep-2012Shahriar Nafees is set to return to the Bangladesh A team for the four-day match against the West Indies’ High Performance Centre side from September 22, after the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s disciplinary committee lifted restrictions on his selection. The left-hand opener was sent home last month before the third and final four-day match in the Shafi Darashah competition in Bangalore after his reaction to an umpiring decision during the A team’s second match. He continued to show his frustration in the dressing-room and was later warned by the match referee. But the team management found the bad behaviour enough for the Bangladesh A captain to be jettisoned before the tour ended. The selectors kept him out of a 19-member training team for the series against the Caribbean side and almost three weeks after the incident, Nafees was referred to the disciplinary committee that heard his account.”The national selectors can select him, there’s no longer any embargo on that,” BCB’s disciplinary committee chairman Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir said. “We have spoken to [Shahriar] Nafees and all members of the team management. We will put together our recommendations and submit it to the board president today.”After the hearing at the BCB headquarters in Mirpur, Nafees admitted it was an overreaction on his part, which he could have avoided at the time.”I gave my version of the events to the disciplinary committee, so I hope the confusion regarding this matter goes away,” Nafees said. “I could have behaved better, and if I had controlled myself, the situation wouldn’t have escalated; had the dressing room been closed off to the public and not been so open, it wouldn’t have created so much trouble.””If I wasn’t the captain, it wouldn’t have looked so bad. My behaviour had an adverse effect on my team-mates, so I could have been a lot more responsible. If I had kept my cool, the incident wouldn’t have stretched for a month,” he said. When he was sent back, some board officials pointed out to Nafees leading a dissension in the training camp in Khulna before they headed to India. It was a small group of players who had allegedly clashed with coach Stuart Barnes and trainer Tushar Kanti Howlader, but neither did the team management inform the board, nor punish anyone. But Nafees believed that the incidence in Bangalore wasn’t related to what took place during the camp in Khulna. “The two are separate incidents. We trained for two months (prior to the tour) and there wasn’t anything wrong in the relation between players and management. I personally don’t want to see the two incidents being related. Whatever has happened though is unfortunate,” he said.

'We can be the underdog that strikes' – Mubarak

Wayamba, Sri Lanka’s domestic Twenty20 champions, are banking on their youth and experience as they head to India to contest the inaugural Champions Twenty20 League

Sa'adi Thawfeeq03-Oct-2009Wayamba, Sri Lanka’s domestic Twenty20 champions, are banking on their mix of youth and experience as they head to India to contest the inaugural Champions Twenty20 League starting October 8.”We have a well-balanced side and most of our opponents haven’t seen us performing together. With our variety of combinations there is a strong chance of winning the championship,” said the captain Jehan Mubarak, who is one of 11 international players in the squad. “It’s all about chances and looking at our team card and the fact that we are an unknown combination in international Twenty20 cricket, we can be the underdog that strikes.”There are no favourites in Twenty20 cricket. On paper we have good players and at the same time we may not be the strongest of the IPL teams who are well experienced in Twenty20 cricket.”Mubarak was happy to have former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene in his side. “Having Mahela in the side is a definite boost for us,” he said. “He knows how to lift the confidence of the players and having a player with his experience is always helpful to any team. Twenty20 is a totally different ball game and a player in the calibre of Mahela is an asset in a championship of this nature.”The allrounder Farveez Maharoof and Tillakaratne Dilshan were members of the Delhi Daredevils side that played in the IPL tournament. Maharoof had the option of representing either Delhi or Wayamba and he opted for his home team.”Dilshan will definitely give a few tips to his Delhi team-mates about our players but Maharoof has already given us some of theirs,” Mubarak said. “It’s not about worrying on individuals; we have done our homework accordingly and have practiced to suit different conditions. Playing in India in a big event will definitely add up that extra pressure on any player. Apart from a few players most of the Wayamba players are used to it. The spectator participation in India will be a contrast to what you experience in a domestic cricket in Sri Lanka.”Our players know how to deal with a bigger crowd around. Our objective is totally different. There is a possibility of winning the first-ever Champions Twenty20 League. It’s not unrealistic and we are confident. Playing in an aggressive and competitive tournament of this nature will definitely create pressure on our players who are taking part in their first ever international championship.”The players in the Wayamba squad have a good understanding of each other’s talents, having played together in nearly three inter-provincial tournaments conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket. They have performed well in the three-day, one-day and Twenty20 games and have won the inter-provincial Twenty20 championships for two seasons.Wayamba will play in Group D along with Delhi and Australian state side Victoria. They take on Dilshan’s Delhi in their first match on October 11, and the game against Victoria follows two days later.Wayamba: Jehan Mubarak (capt), Mahela Jayawardene, Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath, Farveez Maharoof, Kaushalya Lokuarachchi, Jeevantha Kulatunga, Michael Vandort, Mahela Udawatte, Ishara Amarasinghe, Isuru Udana, Thisara Perera, Sameera de Zoysa, Shalika Karunanayake, Chanaka Welagedara.

Dixon-Bonner may be Liverpool’s next Jones

Liverpool have been known to famously produce some of the Premier League’s top stars in the past such as Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen among many others from their youth academy.

Nowadays, Liverpool currently has the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Neco Williams and Caoimhin Kelleher in their senior squad that have emerged through the youth ranks at the Merseyside club.

Yet, one player that we feel could go on to follow in the same path as some of the previously mentioned players residing in Jurgen Klopp’s team is 20-year-old Elijah Dixon-Bonner.

Since joining the Merseyside club’s youth team back in the 2015 summer transfer window from fellow Premier League club Arsenal, Dixon-Bonner has made 46 appearances for Liverpool’s U18 side, scoring three goals and providing five assists as well as making 50 appearances for their U23 side, netting five times and supplying one assist along the way.

Not only does this show how much experience Dixon-Bonner has under his belt at youth level, but it also shows that he has some attacking prowess within him with the number of goals he’s been involved in.

The midfielder, who has been described in recent weeks as “incredible” by Klopp, has also made two senior appearances for the Reds, both being two one-minute cameos in their 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup last season and their recent 2-0 win over Preston North End in the Carabao Cup.

If Dixon-Bonner can continue to play regularly for the U23s and get some significant senior minutes under his belt, we have every confidence that he could follow in the footsteps of Jones and be the next version of the current Liverpool senior midfielder.

The England U21 international has risen to prominence over the last few seasons, making 56 senior outings for the Reds in which he has managed to score eight goals and provide nine assists after working his way through the youth system.

Jones has also managed to rack up a decent number of goals and assists in a similar fashion to that of Dixon-Bonner, showing the similarities between the two players not just from a positional sense on the pitch.

Additionally, with current Reds midfielder Naby Keita sustaining a hamstring injury in their recent 2-2 draw against Brighton, we feel that this could potentially offer the young Liverpool starlet a pathway into the senior squad.

Tom Barclay on Martial to Crystal Palace

Journalist Tom Barclay has admitted the prospect of Crystal Palace signing Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is an exciting one.

What’s the story?

Spanish outlet Fichajes first reported the Eagles’ apparent interest in the 25-year-old a few weeks ago as speculation grows over his potentially imminent Old Trafford exit continues to mount.

And now Barclay has given his verdict on Martial’s proposed arrival at Selhurst Park, claiming it’s a mouth-watering prospect and a move that could reignite the Frenchman’s career.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s a top player. Imagine if Palace did actually sign him.

“I think Martial will probably leave Manchester United, go to a club which is a bit further down the pecking order but play regularly and be fantastic.

“He’s a France international and does play, albeit not all the time. He has played of late in a France team that has got so many options. He is a wonderful player.”

Crystal Palace fans will be buzzing

Despite Martial’s struggles over the last 18 months or so, Palace fans will be buzzing at the reported interest in his services, given his previous exploits for the Red Devils and Barclay’s captivating claim.

The versatile forward appeared to have taken his game to the next level during the 2019/20 season, bagging 23 goals and providing a further 12 assists in 48 appearances for United in all competitions.

However, Martial was unable to build on that impressive 2019/20 showing last term. Injuries and a lack of form saw the former Monaco ace start just 17 Premier League matches and produce only 16 goal contributions in his 36 outings.

After missing out on Didier Deschamps’ Les Blues squad for Euro 2020, it was hoped that the attacker would return to his club in top form once again this season, but he has struggled to make a positive impression on proceedings so far in 2021/22.

Martial has started just three games in the current campaign, finding the back of the net once after the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho pushed him further down the club’s pecking order.

Whether the ex-Monaco ace could be tempted to join Patrick Vieira’s revolution at Palace remains to be seen, but as the January window approaches, the excitement is continuing to build around his next move.

Kral set to miss Spurs clash

As confirmed by West Ham United through their official website, summer signing Alex Kral is still out and will miss today’s highly-anticipated London derby clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Irons snap up another Czech ace…

The Irons were linked with a move for the highly-rated Czech Republic international throughout the summer transfer window but it took until the very last day to finally land their man.

Kral signed for West Ham on a season-long loan, with the club also possessing an option to make his move permanent at the end of this season.

Whenever he’s been available so far, the 23-year-old has been used as a rotational option to first teamers Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek in defensive midfield. However, as West Ham confirm team news for today, they have shared an update on his availability.

The Latest: Kral out of Spurs clash…

As announced in a match preview, the Hammers have said that Kral is still unavailable after he contracted a viral infection and will miss today’s clash against Tottenham.

The defensive colossus also missed their last match against Genk in the Europa League and was unable to provide cover in midfield as a result.

Moyes will also be without the luxury of bringing him on to add more steel to West Ham’s midfield today, although the 23-year-old could come back into the fold over the middle of next week.

The Verdict: Blow for Moyes?

Kral comes as a particularly useful asset when trying to hold on to a lead or simply as an extra defensive option off the bench, as evident by his impressive debut against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup last month.

The Hammers were able to shut out Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side 1-0 largely due to his presence, with the Spartak Moscow loanee making a game-high three interceptions and five successful tackles over the 90 minutes (SofaScore).

Lauded as a ‘quality option’ by BBC Sport contributor Premier League Panel, Moyes could miss him depending on West Ham’s defensive requirements for today.

In four Tests he has so far taken 17 wickets, including a haul of 4 for 58 on the second day against Australia at Edgbaston.Andy Flower, the England coach, said Onions had been on the England selectors’ radar for a few seasons. “He’s always had a bit of nip about his bowling, just enough to rush good players,” he said. “He’s had a storming start to the season, so he’s bang in form and very confident. You can see some of that confidence coming through.”He becomes the second player to be upgraded to the contract system following Dimitri Mascarenhas’ elevation earlier this season.”There is no doubt that Graham thoroughly deserves his increment contract,” Hugh Morris, managing director of England cricket, said. “He has been a valuable contributor to the England set-up since making his debut earlier this summer.”Onions made his debut in the first Test against West Indies, at Lord’s, where he made an immediate impression with he took 5 for 38 and finished with seven in the match. West Ham fans want Kamara

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have gone wild over news involving their club and Marseille defensive ace Boubacar Kamara.

Since central defensive mainstay Angelo Ogbonna ruptured his ACL in the 3-2 victory over Liverpool, manager David Moyes and West Ham have been linked to signing a new presence at the back.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Links to James Tarkowski, for example, have emerged in recent weeks with the Burnley defender set to leave on a free deal at the end of this season.

West Ham could save money in cut price moves like this given targets can sign pre-contracts in January ahead of free summer moves next year.

Now, as explained by ExWHUemployee, it appears West Ham are eyeing another defensive star out of contract in 2022 as news emerges on Kamara.

The Ligue 1 man, who can play both as a centre-half and in midfield, is apparently on Moyes’ radar alongside usual suspect Duje Caleta-Car as the club insider shares news on his West Ham Way Podcast.

West Ham fans excited…

Both men are attracting West Ham’s admiration, but the player supporters are most excited about appears to be Kamara.

According to WhoScored, the 21-year-old averaged more tackles per 90 last season (2.5) than any of Moyes’ current crop – standing out as a real presence defensively.

Given his young age, he comes with real sell-on value also and is rated at a meagre £25.2 million by Transfermarkt.

Taking all this into account, it’s understandable why supporters are ecstatic to see his name mentioned – with one calling Kamara a would-be ‘great signing’.

Exclusive: Ex-Everton ace hypes up youngster for first-team run

Former Everton star Michael Ball believes that the club’s supporters are desperate to see youngster Ellis Simms get a chance in the first-team.

The Toffees have been struggling with injury woes up front, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin suffering with a toe issue that has seen him miss a number of Premier League games.

As a result, summer signing Salomon Rondon has been forced to deputise for the England international.

Simms is an option to play up front who is currently playing for the Toffees’ youth teams.

The 20-year-old has been prolific for the U18s, scoring 41 goals in 44 games, and he has also scored 17 goals in 36 games for the U23s, but has never played for the first team.

Simms has played first-team football, too, going on loan to Blackpool in League One last season and scoring 10 goals in 24 games.

Ball believes that the youngster is already a fan favourite, and believes that the Goodison Park faithful are desperate to see him playing under Benitez.

He said: “We’ve got a young kid, Ellis Simms, who the fans are hoping to get to see on the pitch. He had a great loan period last year.”

Leeds: Lewis O’Brien to sign new deal

Leeds United target Lewis O’Brien is to sign a new contract at Huddersfield Town, The Athletic’s Phil Hay reports.Â

The lowdown: Bielsa and Orta impressed

O’Brien’s contract had been due to expire next June, though Huddersfield did have the option to extend it for a further year (via Transfermarkt).

The club’s chairman, Phil Hodgkinson, revealed earlier this month that they received four offers from Leeds during the summer transfer window, the last of which was worth £13million (via BBC Sport West Yorkshire).

One of O’Brien’s former team-mates, Calum Woods, described him an ‘excellent player’ who ‘can actually do anything’ (via Leeds Live), so it’s no surprise to see Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta so interested.

The latest: Blow for Leeds

In a tweet, Hay told Leeds fans there has been a ‘bit of news from elsewhere’.

O’Brien, who Hay confirmed as ‘one of Leeds’ summer targets’ is set to put pen to paper on a new deal with the Terriers ‘today’.

He’ll apparently be committing himself to the Championship outfit, currently seventh in the table, until 2024.

The verdict: Here comes the money

We shouldn’t immediately rule out a move to Leeds just because O’Brien is signing a new contract.

It will increase his price-tag, clearly, but the Whites remain in need of another central midfielder to provide depth behind Kalvin Phillips, and the fact that Orta and Bielsa were keen enough to make four attempts in the summer suggests they won’t just drop it now.

They’ve already returned to the table three times after seeing bids rejected, and if the manager is really that desperate to fit the hard-working midfielder into his plans, it seems likely that Orta will try to negotiate once more.

All that said, it is certainly a blow for Bielsa to see a target they spent all summer pursuing signing new terms elsewhere.

In other news, what about this summer target?
