Allen, Phillips cut loose as New Zealand hit back with dominant win

England on receiving end of 74-run hammering to keep series alive going into fourth T20I

New Zealand produced a vastly improved team performance to claim a thumping victory at Edgbaston and maintain interest in the series with one match to play. Finn Allen slammed 83 off 58, Glenn Phillips added a 27-ball half-century and then the bowlers all chipped in as England’s chase fell apart on a wearing surface.Set a target of 203 to secure their third win on the bounce, England fell to 55 for 4 in the ninth over and never really looked like making a contest of it. Jos Buttler struck a few defiant blows before being fifth man out for 40 off 21 and the lower order fell away quickly in the face of a probing New Zealand bowling display, Kyle Jamieson and Ish Sohi sharing six wickets. The margin of 74 runs was among England’s heaviest defeats in T20Is when batting second, and offered a measure of revenge to Tim Southee’s side after going down by 95 runs at Old Trafford in the second T20I, as well as giving New Zealand the chance to claim a share of the series at Trent Bridge on Tuesday.New Zealand adapt, at last
Southee had challenged his side to adapt better to conditions after two sub-par showings, and they were better in all three departments in Birmingham. Allen and Phillips played well-judged innings during an 88-run stand after Southee had opted to put up a score, while the changes made to the bowling attack both bore fruit – Matt Henry, who was Player of the Match in the T20 Blast final on this ground in July, and Jamieson, making only his fourth New Zealand appearance since suffering a back stress injury in 2022, front and centre of a miserly powerplay performance. The spin pair of Sodhi and Mitchell Santner, although presented with a more favourable scenario, produced combined figures of 4 for 53 from seven overs – compared to 1 for 98 from eight overs delivered by Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone (Moeen Ali curiously left unbowled on his home ground). In the field, although Allen couldn’t quite pull off a spectacular relay effort to dismiss Buttler at long-on, Phillips’ flying leap to palm back a Dawid Malan slog-sweep and prevent it going for six epitomised their commitment.Malan’s birthday blues
Such are the blurred lines between white-ball formats in this day and age that every time Malan – who is in England’s 50-over World Cup squad – has batted in this series it has invited scrutiny and comparison with Harry Brook – who isn’t. Malan, it’s worth noting, averages 54.92 in ODIs, but was dropped during the Hundred (officially a T20 competition) after scoring 28 runs in four innings for Trent Rockets; he lost his place, perhaps ironically, to Joe Root, who is in the ODI squad but hasn’t played a T20I since 2019. Keeping up?Whatever the number of balls, sets or overs, the Malan malaise appears to have returned. Having made a typically staunch half-century at Chester-le-Street to anchor a small chase – very much bread-and-butter for England’s No. 3 – he followed up with nought off four balls in the second T20I and an uncomfortable 2 off 11 here. His frustrations were evident as he walked off after hoisting Southee to the one catcher out on the off side, as England reached the six-over mark on 30 for 2 – their third-lowest powerplay score since 2015.Brook’s failure, holing out off the legspin of Sodhi, meant that Malan at least would not have to hear all about his rival’s prodigious abilities for a third time in the series. But nevertheless, this probably wasn’t how Malan would have wanted to celebrate his 36th birthday.Allen provides platform
Allen showed how powerful his hitting can be when taking Luke Wood for three consecutive sixes in the first over the series at the Riverside – but he only managed three singles off the other 12 balls he faced in that game, highlighting how turning over the strike can be more of a struggle for the 24-year-old, now more than two years into his T20 international career. Here, on a dry surface that made timing the ball a challenge, he was occasionally visibly frustrated by his inability to execute shots: on 58 from 42, his groan was audible over the stump mic when mistiming a pull off Gus Atkinson. But he managed to accrue 21 singles and five twos – albeit that encompassed the dismissal Devon Conway run out going for a third – to go with the big shots. It was, he said at the break between innings, part of a conscious effort to bat for as long as possible. “100%, I wanted to take it deep, thought it might not be that easy for the guys coming in,” he said.Nevertheless, he was still keen to flex those boundary-clearing muscles. The first of his six sixes came via a clean strike down the ground off Jordan in the powerplay, and he went to a 35-ball half-century with a hit that just cleared the man, and the rope, at long-on off Livingstone. The piece de resistance, however, was a pointed trident of blows off Rashid, England’s premier legspinner, who was flambéed over long-off, long-on and straight back over his head from consecutive deliveries in the 15th.Phillips turns the screw
The dismissal of Tim Seifert, smartly stumped off a Livingstone legbreak, offered an obvious example of the pitch gripping – Livingstone himself reacted by covering his mouth with his hands – but Phillips was able to bide his time and get accustomed to conditions while Allen did the heavy lifting through the middle of the innings. He was on 27 off 19 at the end of the over in which Allen took on Rashid, before adding a brace of boundaries off Jordan in the next and then striking Wood for six and four as he began to kick up through the gears.Although Allen’s innings came to end, bowled by a Wood cutter, Phillips unleashed another beastly salvo in the following over to keep New Zealand on course for 200. Two into the deep off the first ball of the 18th took him to a 27-ball fifty, before Phillips hammered Livingstone for 6-6-6 off three legitimate deliveries – twice into the crowd at deep midwicket, then over long-off. He was gone in the next over, bowled by Atkinson’s slower-ball yorker for 69 off 34, as the innings threatened to stall at the death – but New Zealand already had plenty.

Western Australia 371 for 7 (Whiteman 89, Turner 86, Bancroft 66, Hobson 64*) beat South Australia 349 for 8 (Drew 120, McSweeney 51, Short 3-81),South Australia, despite a superb century from Daniel Drew, slipped to a 22-run defeat to reigning champions Western Australia in their high-scoring one-day clash which brought 720 runs.WA, with Sam Whiteman top-scoring with 89 and Ashton Turner blasting 86 from 44 balls, posted 371 for 7 at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.Nick Hobson closed the innings in style with a 24-ball half-century as WA slammed 122 in their last 10 overs. In reply, SA’s chase under lights was steered by Drew, who compiled a classy 120 from 119 balls. However, they fell short, mustering 349 for 8 from their 50 overs as defending champions WA made it two from two early season.Drew featured in handy partnerships of 96 runs with opener Henry Hunt (47 from 71 balls) and 95 with Nathan McSweeney (51 from 44).But a middle-order slump of 5 for 98 cruelled SA’s chances of victory, with D’Arcy Short taking 3 or 81 from eight oversIn WA’s innings, Short fell for his second duck in three days, shouldering arms second ball, and Josh Philippe also departed early to leave their side 34 for 2 in the ninth over.Cameron Bancroft (66) and Whiteman then seized the momentum with a 105-run partnership for the third wicket.Bancroft, who was in prolific run-scoring mode last summer in all formats, struck eight fours in his 99-ball knock but chopped on to his stumps to give Nathan McAndrew his second wicket.Turner then blazed a half-century from just 28 balls, including five sixes and three fours, to put on a rapid-fire 119-run stand with Whiteman in just 10 overs.Whiteman was dropped on consecutive balls in the 70s while Turner finished with eight fours and six sixes.

Can Sri Lanka and Pakistan still make the semi-finals?

And what are Afghanistan’s chances to get there after their latest win?

S Rajesh30-Oct-2023

Kusal Mendis has had a challenging task after taking over captaincy•Associated Press

Do Sri Lanka still have a chance of qualifying? With four points from six games, Sri Lanka are on the same boat as Pakistan and Netherlands. The situation is dire, but they aren’t completely out of it yet. Mathematically, it’s still possible that two teams finish on 12 or more points, and as many as seven teams end up on eight, fighting for two spots. That means Sri Lanka, who can still finish on 10 points, are in the mix, as are Pakistan and Netherlands. However, given how poorly they’ve played so far, and that two of their three remaining games are against India and New Zealand, the chances of them progressing are extremely slim. How much does this victory improve Afghanistan’s chances of finishing in the top four? With their win over Sri Lanka, Afghanistan currently have six points from as many games, and if they win all three of their remaining matches they will finish on 12. Given that only four other teams can get to 12 or more points, they will have a fair chance if they do get up to 12. However, while they will expect to beat Netherlands, whom they play next on Friday, their last two matches are against Australia and South Africa. Even 10 points could give them a chance if other results go their way. However, if it comes down to net run rates, Afghanistan’s current value of -0.718 could work against them; the teams in the top four all have NRRs of more than 0.95.What are Pakistan’s chances, going into Tuesday’s game against Bangladesh?Pakistan have had a forgettable campaign so far, but they still have a mathematical chance of finishing in the top four, even third, if other results go their way. They can’t catch up with India’s 12, but if at least one of New Zealand, South Africa and Australia lose a few games and don’t go beyond 10, it could come down to run rates.Even if Pakistan lose, there is the possibility of the eight-point tussle mentioned above. Will 14 points be enough for qualification?Yes, as only India, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia can finish on 14 or more points. That means a win on Thursday against Sri Lanka will assure India of a spot in the semi-finals.

Muzumdar: 'There is no compromise on fielding and fitness'

“We need to play a certain brand of cricket, which we have been known for. Fearless cricket is something I’ve always advocated”

S Sudarshanan05-Dec-20236:58

‘We are seeing the positive effects of the WPL on India’s squad’

In his first press conference as the head coach of India, Amol Muzumdar picked fitness and fielding as areas of top priority ahead of the women’s T20I series opener against England.”Fielding and fitness are of highest priority,” Muzumdar said on the eve of the first T20I. “There is no compromise on fielding and fitness. There will be lot of camps that will be happening post this series and getting into the next season. There will be a lot of cricket played either at the NCA or somewhere or the other.”More exposure, fitness and fielding will be my top priority. The fringe players – the new generation coming through – will get equal opportunities. These are the prime things that we will take forward after this series.”Related

New Test dawn for India, but focus firmly on road to T20 World Cup

India kicked off preparations for the multi-format series against England and Australia – including two one-off Tests – mid-November at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. After a four-day practice match, they had a three-day camp before touching down at the Wankhede on December 2. Skill aspects aside, focus was strained in on the fitness aspects with parameters set.”Goals have already been set,” Muzumdar said. “We already had some [fitness] test done when we were at the NCA in Bengaluru. [The parameters] are already in place and we follow it very rigorously and religiously moving forward. There will be three tests in the season, that is already being followed.”Muzumdar called for the batters to play fearlessly, starting from Shafali Verma. In T20Is in 2023, India’s openers have had a fifty-run partnership only twice. Shafali averages 20.45 in 11 outings this year and has a strike rate of 112.50 – well below her career strike rate of 130.58.”We need to play a certain brand of cricket, which we have been known for,” Muzumdar said. “Shafali and Jemimah [Rodrigues] are both a very important cogs in the wheel. I would like them to continue what they have been doing.”Fearless cricket is something I have always advocated. We would be playing that brand of cricket.”It is the first time India are playing a T20I at the Wankhede and the opening clash against England will be only the second women’s T20I at the venue. Muzumdar, who played most of his domestic cricket for Mumbai, was nostalgic talking about the venue but cautioned against getting complacent.”Coming back to Wankhede, I am starting a new role at the home ground,” he said. “I have played all my cricket since childhood here. [It is] great to start the series here at Wankhede. [We are] familiar with the conditions but cannot be complacent as every game has its own challenges.”India have won only seven of the 27 T20Is against England, but Muzumdar brushed aside the numbers.”We have decided to leave the statistics and whatever has happened behind us. We are looking forward to a fresh start. The numbers are there to be seen, but these girls and the team are looking forward to the season ahead. We are not going to go back in history — of course it is important — but at the same time, it is also important to look forward to the season ahead.”Harmanpreet Kaur and Amol Muzumdar will combine as captain and coach for their first series together•PTI

DRS a first for a women’s bilateral series in IndiaThe series will be the first to have the Decision Review System (DRS) for a women’s bilateral series in India. Each team will have two reviews in the T20Is and three per innings in the one-off Test.DRS was first introduced in women’s cricket at the 2017 ODI World Cup but it was inconsistent in bilaterals. The Women’s T20 World Cup in 2018 was the first T20 edition to have the review system in place. For bilateral series, it is up to the host boards to have the broadcast facilities for DRS.While England have had DRS in their home series for a while, Muzumdar said India have a “DRS committee” in place to deal with what he called “important aspect of the game”.”We have already had a discussion on this. We do have a DRS committee in place. It is an important aspect of the game. It could be a game-changer or a series-changer. Every small little aspect will be taken care of. We already have a committee in place to deal with that.”England captain Heather Knight, on the other hand, laid bare the key members of the on-field DRS decisions, having used to the system in the women’s Hundred as well.”We are really used to playing with DRS both internationally and domestically,” she said. “Myself, the bowler and [wicketkeeper] Amy Jones are really key cogs in terms of information. Not sure I am the best at it, don’t think if I have an amazing record at DRS. Yeah, one of those you trust your bowler and keeper to try and work it out.”
