Newcastle’s World Cup transfer hitlist – Part One

After an incredible 501 days, Newcastle United made their first cash purchase since January 2013 with the recent capture of Tenerife starlet Ayoze Perez. And just like London buses, the twenty year old Spaniard was joined at St James’ Park shortly afterwards by the controversial free transfer of Jack Colback.

Fans may bemoan the fees involved or the relative reputations of the new arrivals but it is business which indicates that the club may be prepared to conduct some much needed business in the summer ahead. A tired squad with clear areas of concern may finally be given the fresh impetus it so desperately needs.

The World Cup will likely provide an unwelcome distraction from the Magpies’ recruitment plans. But with so many players keen to impress in Brazil, Graham Carr and Alan Pardew will likely be watching events unfold with some interest.

Bearing this in mind, here is PART ONE of Newcastle’s World Cup transfer hitlist.

ANDRE AYEW

A winger long linked with the Magpies, the 24 year old Ghanaian’s desire to leave Marseille this summer has put a number of European clubs on alert. Ayew himself has fuelled the speculation by speaking of his “preference” to play in the Premier League.

The 24 year old equalised with a peach of a header in the recent draw with Germany.

With Hatem Ben Arfa clearly out of favour, Pardew could be interested in strengthening his attacking options with the acquisition of the Ghanaian. However, a bidding war is expected for Ayew and Newcastle will do well to convince the player to make the move to Tyneside.

ASHKAN DEJAGAH

Having gifted the Iranian the winner at Craven Cottage back in March, Tim Krul wouldn’t be pleased to see the winger at St James’ Park. The 27 year old impressed sporadically at Fulham this season though, and was arguably Iran’s most dangerous player at the World Cup.

BRAD GUZAN

Having usurped Shay Given as Villa’s number one a few season ago, Guzan has established himself as one of the club’s most consistent performers. Despite his relatively small stature, the American has almost single-handedly earned his side points with the number of saves he has made.

Unfortunately for Guzan, he has spent most of his time in Brazil so far watching Tim Howard and the rest of his international colleagues perform. But if Tim Krul is lured away this summer, the Magpies could do a lot worse than replacing him with the Villa number one.

BRUNO MARTINS INDI

Louis Van Gaal is rumoured to be interested in bringing the 22 year old with him to Old Trafford next season. The defender has achieved notoriety on the internet in recent weeks for THAT now infamous “death glare” towards Diego Costa.

Obviously Newcastle would struggle to compete with any potential offer from Manchester United. But with a reliable partner for Fabricio Coloccini needed, the Magpies should consider a move for the 22 year old that has impressed so far in Brazil.

BRYAN RUIZ

Ruiz turned down the advances of the Magpies to join Fulham back in 2011. But having spent the second half of the season on loan at PSV, the 28 year old is expected to depart Craven Cottage this summer.

Ruiz scored the winner in Costa Rica’s improbable recent victory over Italy with this impressive header.

With the club in desperate need of attacking reinforcements, Carr and Pardew could consider the prospect of signing the 28 year old once again. Ruiz has impressed in his country’s unlikely run to the knockout stages.

CARLOS CARMONA

Futbol, Chile vs Egipto. Friendly match, 2013.The chilean national team player Carlos Carmona celebrates after scoring against Egypt during the friendly football match held at Vicente Calderon stadium in Madrid, Spain.06/02/2013

With eight yellow cards and one red for Atalanta this season, Carmona’s disciplinary record suggests he is a player very much in the mould of Cheick Tiote.

The Chilean hasn’t featured much in Brazil so far but is rated highly in Serie A. If Pardew was looking to add more steel to his central midfield, Carmona could fit the bill.

CHRISTIAN BOLANOS

As well as lacking striking options, there is also a dearth of pace in the wide areas at Newcastle. Bolanos may be an unfamiliar name to many in England, but the FC Copenhagen winger has been linked with a move to Everton in the past.

Bolanos has looked threatening in his appearances in Brazil so far. However, at the age of thirty, the winger will have to have an exceptional tournament to convince the Magpies to deviate from their transfer blueprint.

CHRISTOPH KRAMER

Although he is unlikely to see much game time in Brazil this summer, Kramer is definitely one to watch for the future. Alongside Granit Xhaka, the 23 year old has formed an impressive midfield partnership for Borussia Monchengladbach this season.

As it stands, the player is currently on a two year loan from Bayer Leverkusen which makes it difficult for any immediate transfer. But if Kramer continues developing at his current rate, Newcastle would do well to snap him up before any of Europe’s elite.

EDER

The Portuguese striker’s name should be familiar to Newcastle fans, having reportedly attracted great attention from the Magpies last year. However, injury has severely limited the 26 year old’s impact this campaign, with just four goals to his name.

With Portugal seemingly destined for an early exit, Eder likely hasn’t done enough to convince Pardew or Carr that they should make a move. However, if the 26 year old re-discovers the form which saw him coveted by an number of suitors, the Magpies may come calling again sooner rather than later.

EMILIO IZAGUIRRE

Izaguirre hardly endeared himself to England fans with his cynical actions against Daniel Sturridge in the 0-0 draw in Miami. But the Honduran left back has impressed since making the move to Parkhead back in 2010.

Even if Davide Santon remains on Tyneside, the Magpies should seriously consider acquiring a more defensively reliable left back. Despite being 28 years old, Izaguirre could be considered as an affordable improvement to the current side.

EMMANUEL EMENIKE

Several recent reports have suggested that Emenike is set to be the subject of a transfer tussle between several Premier League clubs. Although Newcastle aren’t currently believed to be one of those sides, the urgent need for several strikers could see them turn to the in-demand Nigerian forward.

The 27 year old has impressed since transferring to Fenerbahce last summer and could be on the move once again. The forward has so far blown hot and cold in Brazil but may have convinced some of his suitors with his powerful display against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

ENNER VALENCIA

A goalscorer in Ecuador’s recent 2-2 draw with England, Valencia has netted three times at the World Cup already. The 25 year old enjoyed a prolific campaign at Mexican side Pachuca, netting eighteen times.

Capable of playing centrally or out wide, Valencia would be a versatile option in Newcastle’s attack. However, it would be a gamble for the club to move for the Ecuadorian currently plying his trade in Mexico.

ERIC MAXIM CHOUPO-MOTING

A forward capable of playing centrally or out wide, Choupo-Moting has netted twenty times in seventy four appearances at current club Mainz. However, with his contract expiring in the summer, the 25 year old has already outlined his intentions to move on.

Schalke, Roma, Inter Milan and Borussia Monchengladbach are all believed to be interested in the Cameroonian forward. At times frustratingly inconsistent, Choupo-Moting’s availability on a free and record in front of goal could interest Newcastle.

FELIPE CAICEDO

QUITO (12-10-2012).- Felipe Caiocedo, delantero de Ecuador, festeja su primer gol conseguido contra la selección de Chile, en el partido por la Eliminatorias Brasil 2014, en el Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa de Quito.Carlos Granja/ EL UNIVERSO

The former Manchester City, Malaga and Lokomotiv Moscow striker has hardly featured this summer. But with Shola Ameobi’s departure, Newcastle do lack a target man up top.

But having made the move to Al-Jazira as recently as January, any move for the 25 year old looks unlikely at this stage.

FELIPE GUTIERREZ

A central midfielder capable of occupying defensive and attacking roles, Gutierrez would offer a versatile option to Newcastle’s midfield. The 23 year old is strong in the tackle and a confident passer of the ball, although he does need to work on his creativity.

The Chilean does look set to have a big future in the game. However, whether he is the midfielder that Newcastle need right now is debatable.

FRASER FORSTER

With Joe Hart firmly entrenched as England’s number one, Forster is unlikely to see any game time in Brazil. However, the former Newcastle goalkeeper has impressed at Celtic, particularly in the Champions League.

If Tim Krul does move on this summer, Forster will almost certainly be considered as a potential replacement. The player himself has publicly spoken of his love for the club and would surely jump at the chance to return to St James’ Park.

GARY MEDEL

Following Cardiff City’s relegation, Medel is likely to be one of several players looking for moves away this summer. Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer has already said that he won’t stand in the way of the Chilean, should the £11.2 million signing request a transfer.

A tough tackling midfielder capable of deputising in defence, the Chilean would certainly add more bite to Newcastle’s midfield.

GRANIT XHAKA

One of two Borussia Monchengladbach midfielders on this list, Xhaka is expected to be on the move this summer. The 21 year old has impressed as a deep lying playmaker under Lucien Favre’s management in the Bundesliga this season.

After Yohan Cabaye’s departure, Xhaka could be the ideal candidate to fill the creative void. However, Newcastle will likely face stiff competition for the player’s signature, with Liverpool believed to be very keen on the Swiss international.

HECTOR MORENO

Moreno is expected to depart Espanyol this summer, although a decision on his future has been delayed until after the World Cup. The Mexican has been touted in some circles as a possible alternative to Mats Hummels in Manchester United’s transfer plans.

Although the attack is Newcastle’s primary area of concern, another reliable central defender would be welcomed at St James’ Park. While Espanyol are believed to be willing to accept less than Moreno’s release clause, any deal will still likely claim a sizable chunk of the Magpies’ transfer budget.

JAVIER HERNANDEZ

If the rumours are to be believed, Chicharito has finally grown tired of his bit-part role at Old Trafford. A proven Premier League goalscorer, Pardew should consider a move for the out of favour striker.

However, Hernandez is currently being kept out of the Mexico team by the form of Oribe Peralta.

JEFFERSON MONTERO

Various reports have linked Montero with a number of Premier League clubs in the past year alone, including Arsenal and Swansea City. Antonio Valencia is even believed to have recommended his countryman to his colleagues at Old Trafford.

Against makeshift right back James Milner, Montero had a strong showing in the recent 2-2 draw with England. With Newcastle in desperate need of attacking reinforcements, Carr and Pardew could have their eyes on Montero.

JOEL CAMPBELL

Contracted to Arsenal, the Costa Rican travels to Brazil off of the back of a successful loan spell at Olympiakos. The forward netted on ten occasions in Greece and is capable of playing in any role across the front three.

Campbell netted the first in Costa Rica’s shock 3-1 victory over Uruguay.

Reports have suggested that Campbell is already on Newcastle’s radar. Whether it is on loan or even a permanent move, the 21 year old could be the answer to the club’s current attacking woes.

JOEL MATIP

Although his contract is understood to run up until 2016, Matip is believed to be in the shop window this summer.

Available for a fee in the region of £8 million, Matip could fit into Newcastle’s current transfer blueprint. However, they could find it difficult to lure the player to St James’ Park, with Arsenal and Barcelona being linked to the defender in the past.

JORDAN AYEW

Having spent the second half of last season on loan at Sochaux, Marseille are believed to be ready to listen to offers for the 22 year old forward. Although he wouldn’t be the first name on Newcastle’s shortlist, a strong showing at the World Cup could make the Magpies pay closer attention.

The striker has been linked with West Brom in the past two windows whilst Hull are also believed to be interested.

CARLOS BACCA

Having already lost Ivan Rakitic, Sevilla will not be keen to lose another key individual this summer. But the 27 year old Colombian striker has inevitably attracted attention with his form this season, having netted fourteen times in La Liga.

If the budget allows it, Pardew should keep a keen eye on the Colombian striker.

SEVEN freebies to solve Arsenal’s defensive crisis

As if losing two points late on in a top of the table clash with Manchester City wasn’t destructive enough for Arsenal, the Gunners also limped out of the 2-2 draw with Mathieu Debuchy hobbling to the treatment table to join a whole host of his defensive team-mates.

It already looks as if Arsene Wenger’s inability to snap up a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen could prove to be costly, with the Londoners down to just five first-team defenders – Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, Calum Chambers, Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs. The Frenchman is said to be ready to raid his youth teams for quick cover, but he could delve back into the transfer market, where a few diamonds in the rough are still available.

So with that in mind, here are seven defenders Arsenal could still sign. We’ll warn you, beggars can’t be choosers…

Joseph Yobo

After a disastrous loan stint with Norwich at the back end of last season, Fenerbahce elected to release the Nigerian veteran. However, Yobo proved that he still has a few miles left in the tank with some composed displays at the World Cup, where he helped the Super Eagles make it to the last 16 – a feat England cannot brag of.

The 34-year-old boasts a wealth of Premier League experience after nine seasons with Everton earlier in his career, and could provide cover at the heart of the Gunners’ backline until January.

Diego Lugano

Although he had a difficult season at West Brom last time out, Lugano may well be the pick of the defensive freebies on the market. The former Uruguay captain starred at the World Cup over the summer and boasts the 2011 Copa America among his list of honours, making him a potentially tempting short-term option.

Lugano is still only 33, so Arsenal may be able to get another season out of him should Wenger be willing to take a punt. But be warned he is slooooooow.

//www.youtube.com/embed/9wlZLo6RbVE

Oguchi Onyewu

Injuries have plagued the American’s career, with spells at AC Milan, Malaga and Sporting Lisbon having all been disrupted by fitness issues. Onyewu spent some of last season at Sheffield Wednesday and has been tipped for a return to his homeland to see out his career in the MLS, but Wenger could make a surprise swoop for him… after all, the Gunners were linked with Nikola Zigic not so long ago!

//www.youtube.com/embed/BtXMug8Sq0s

Anthony Reveillere

With both full-back positions a concern, Reveillere could be an option worth considering. The Frenchman was playing at the highest level with Napoli last season, which illustrates his pedigree, while he has also won five Ligue 1 titles in a solid career.

The 34-year-old can play on either side of the backline to provide cover and can still do a job when called upon.

Carlos Marchena

Marchena may be slower than ever, but he would bring experience and versatility in the short-term for Arsenal. The big Spaniard has been a La Liga regular for much of the last decade with spells at Valencia, Villarreal and Deportivo La Coruna – the latter have been in the Segunda Division of late – and even has a 2010 World Cup winner’s medal among his collection – albeit he was merely a squad member.

Titus Bramble

We’re only joking… or are we?

//www.youtube.com/embed/1FYFG3FrD5I

William Gallas

A former Gunner, Gallas is without a club after a tough time in Australia. He may no longer have the athleticism he once boasted, but there’s no denying that the Frenchman was a top class Premier League performer in his day. That nous should not have left him just yet, making the 37-year-old a faint possibility.

On form West Ham United star wants to emulate Chelsea legend

West Ham United’s Diafra Sakho, who only join the club recently has been on great scoring form and has revealed that he wants to emulate the likes of Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, Daily Mail reports.

The 24-year-old striker has already netted five goals in five games as his team are currently enjoying a great start to the new campaign sitting in seventh place.

After his recent 2-1 victory over struggling Queens Park Rangers, he stated that Drogba was his hero and hopes to follow in his footsteps.

WANT MORE? >> West Ham United Latest News | Chelsea Latest News

“It’s because of him that I wanted to have the No 15 at West Ham,” Sakho said.

“I like how he plays and the way he plays. I think the game in England needs people like Didier Drogba and I take him as my example.

“I have made sacrifices since my father died two years ago and the birth of my daughter, also two years ago. I asked myself: do you want to be just a good professional, always playing at the same level? That’s what motivated me to get to where I am.

“If I want to give a good education to my daughter and how better to give her a good education as far as football is concerned than by showing her that her father can play at the same high level as the players he used to dream about and see on television.”

Are Liverpool one season wonders?

If we go back to the end of the 2008/09 Premier League season, we’ll see Liverpool sitting in 2nd, only four points behind the champions Manchester United. Prior to last season, this was Liverpool’s best finish in the league since the 2001/02 season. After the 2008/09 season, a bunch of mediocre league finishes outside the top four followed for The Reds till they finished 2nd last season, only two points behind the champions Manchester City.

Liverpool currently sits in 9th spot in the Premier League this season, and are yet to show any sign of being title contenders. They are yet to win back-to-back games, lost to sides like West Ham United and Aston Villa, no real goal scoring threat with consistency, and still with a leaky defence, meaning they have conceded just as many goals as they have scored. Are Liverpool on course to repeat what happened after the 2008/09 season?

Are Liverpool genuine title contenders? Or just one season wonders?

Throughout the course of last season, the Merseyside based club only lost six games in the league, but so far this season after seven games, they have lost three. Their defence are partially to blame for this poor statistic due to the fact they have conceded 10 goals, six of those games coming in the last four games. After seven games last season, Liverpool had only conceded five goals. Liverpool’s defence last season was still poor in quality, though, considering Manchester City only conceded 37 goals and Chelsea, who finished in 3rd, only conceded 27 throughout the whole of the season, and Liverpool finished conceding 50. Although they did make additions to their defence last summer with Croatian Dejan Lovren and Spaniard Alberto Moreno, the defence is still conceding too many goals for the league position they aspire to be sitting in.

It’s obvious that Liverpool’s poor defence last season had a ‘get-out-of-jail-free’ card in the form of Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, and this was one of the main reasons why they were able to finish in 2nd. The now-Barcelona striker scored 31 goals from 33 appearances for Liverpool last season in the league, and also got the Reds out of tough situations on several occasions. For his performances, he received several individual awards including PFA Player of the Year, Premier League Player of the Season and FWA Footballer of the Year.

So far this season, Liverpool are lacking anyone that can do what Suarez was able to do last season. Despite being suspended for the first five games of the season, the Uruguayan was able to score six goals in 10 games into the season last year. This season, Liverpool’s top goal scorer is Englishman Raheem Sterling, who has scored three goals from seven appearances. Suarez’s strike partner from last season, Englishman Daniel Sturridge, who scored 21 goals from 29 appearances last season, has failed to make an impact so far this season due to a thigh injury. Suarez’s so called’ replacement, Italian Mario Balotelli, has also failed to make an impact and is yet to score or provide an assist for the Reds in the league.

Every single team that wants to compete for the title, or even a top four spot, improves every year whether that is in skill or player additions. Manchester United have brought in some world-class players like Argentine Angel di Maria and Colombian Radamel Falcao, Chelsea have changed the way they play by bringing in Spaniard Diego Costa, Manchester City are still dominant in their games,  and Arsenal always seem to find a way of putting together three or four good runs a season. Liverpool, however, haven’t done anything. They haven’t replaced Suarez who achieved so many results for them last season, and now his cloud of amazement has disappeared, their defence is being exposed for what it really is.

For Liverpool to compete for title contention or even a top four spot, they’ll need Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester City to slip up, which isn’t going to happen.

Liverpool ARE one season wonders.

Three things we learnt from Tottenham’s clash with Man United

So, there we have it, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United both played like sides who had played a game less than 48 hours earlier, with each side seemingly happy to play out the 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane – much to the dismay of us neutrals.

All in all, a point was probably fair with Louis van Gaal’s side no doubt feeling hard done by to not be winning at the break, however, Tottenham came back in the second half and forced David de Gea into a fair few saves – although Spurs’ Hugo Lloris took home Michael Owen’s Man of the Match award (how exciting for the Frenchman, ey?!)

Anyway, what did we learn from today’s stalemate?

Wayne Rooney isn’t a centre midfielder

The England captain has, and always will be, a striker. Nuff said.

Man United’s formidable foursome just won’t work

When you have Radamel Falcao, Robin van Persie, Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney in your starting XI you expect a fair few goals; something just doesn’t feel right.

Tottenham don’t deserve Hugo Lloris

There is a growing feeling that the Spurs No.1 won’t be at White Hart Lane for much longer, following another Man of the Match performance. Lloris is a ‘keeper who deserves to play continually at the highest level at Pochettino cannot guarantee regular Champions League football.

Is this World Cup star finally on his way to Chelsea?

As one of the many impressive Colombian stars to stand out at last summer’s World Cup in Brazil, Juan Cuadrado is a player whose stock is currently on a rapid rise. It comes as no surprise that the South American, who is expected to soon be on his way from Fiorentina, has developed admirers in the Premier League as he simply suits the role of one of football’s new emerging stars.

It would seem that nearly all Europe’s elite clubs have been chasing Cuadrado since he first broke onto the scene, but within the closing stages of this season’s January transfer window, it seems that Jose Mourinho and Chelsea may have just won the race according to reports in BBC Sport. The Viola star is expected to be priced around the £23 million mark, with talk of Mohamed Salah – one of Chelsea’s more pointless signings – making way as part of the deal if the above reports are correct.

In light of such developments, it’s important to consider how the Colombian will adapt to his potential new home in the Premier League? And what does his signing signal for the Blues in their quest for silverware this season?

One thing Juan Cuadrado will certainly add to the Chelsea ranks is flair – and lots of it. The Colombian seems to be an avid fan of the trickier side of the game, with his ability to beat defenders and then go on to score leaving many admirers greatly impressed with the attacking midfielder’s talents. It is a style that is seemingly best played by South Americans, and in Juan Cuadrado, Chelsea may have just found themselves one of the most authentic practicers of the form going at the moment. The 26-year-old has also become renowned for his quick passing and direct style of play when marauding into the final third.

However, Juan Cuadrado is perhaps best known for his long range shooting and confidence outside the box. The World Cup star loves to line up chance after chance just on the edge of the keeper’s area. Although Chelsea have many other confident talents who are capable of doing just that very thing, adding that bit more Colombian firepower certainly wouldn’t go amiss for Jose Mourinho in the remainder of the 2014/15 campaign.

That said, what Cuadrado’s potential arrival does for Chelsea’s current system remains very much up for debate. Jose Mourinho has traditionally favoured wingers/attacking midfielders who have enough defensive qualities to be effective at both sides of the game. Whilst Juan Cuadrado certainly has all the necessary attacking tools in his locker, his ability to track back and cover his man has never been given huge priority in the no. 11’s game.

Mourinho has already ousted Juan Mata in favour of the more defensively minded, but not as technically gifted, Willian; so what this means for Chelsea’s newest arrivals is anyone’s guess. It also remains slightly tricky to see how both Juan Cuadrado and Eden Hazard will be able to work in the same team, especially when the likes of Oscar are also involved in the mix. As all of the previous three names remain very good players however, it shouldn’t be too hard for Mourinho to eventually get them clicking on the pitch.

Whilst the Colombian’s much publicised move to Chelsea isn’t finalised just yet, the deal is still likely going to bring one of the world’s most exciting talents to the English game. Although his acquisition will not please all, fans of the Premier League will largely rejoice at the chance to see Juan Cuadrado playing on these shores, even if it continues the theme of English players losing out on their starting places to the ever growing contingency of foreign stars in the Premier League.

Swansea gaffer should pip Chelsea manager to award

When it comes to who will be voted Manager of the Season in this year’s top flight, there will be the obvious contenders.

Jose Mourinho will of course, be the overwhelming favourite. He looks sure to lead his Chelsea team to the title. A title that appears will be won at an absolute canter.

Southampton’s Ronald Koeman will also, surely be close to winning the prize. He has produced a startlingly good season on the South Coast, still on the coat tails of the Champions League as we approach the final weeks of the season.

[ad_pod id=’football-friends’ align=’center’]

However, a manager who seems destined to lead his side no higher than 8th, should be the man receiving the gong come May.

Garry Monk’s appointment in South Wales was met with scepticism. A fantastic servant to the club, but following Brendan Rodgers and Michael Laudrup, he was seen as a step in the wrong direction. Many Swans feared the worse. With a manager with next to no experience, would their Premier League adventure be coming to an end?

His first game, was arguably the perfect one for Monk. Not a lot would need to be said to his players before they took on Cardiff, the raw emotion and the passion of the fixture could do most of the work. It did. Monk’s side trounced their dearest rival 3-0.

Premier League survival was clinched on the penultimate day of last season, something that many pundits believed would not be achieved under the inexperienced former captain. He was rewarded with a three-year contract and given the long-term backing of the club’s Chairman Huw Jenkins.

Last summer saw the Swans lose two major players. Michel Vorm, who had been sensational for the club in goal, and Ben Davies, the young full-back, both made the move to north London and White Hart Lane.

Monk recruited cleverly, acquiring players with English experience, Lukasz Fabianksi was purchased to start in goal and vitally, Gylfi Sigurðsson. The man who had previously been at the Liberty Stadium and one that would again become integral for Monk’s Swansea.

The first game of Monk’s first full season could scarcely have gone better in his wildest dreams. Beating van Gaal’s, Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Through the goals of Wilfried Bony and the craft of Jonjo Shelvey and Sigurðsson, Swansea were enjoying almost a perfect season until January. Then, as we know, Bony would be prized away by Champions Man City.

Following the striker’s sale, and a heavy defeat by Chelsea, questions were again asked of Swansea and their manager.

Had they finally been found out?

Would the late season slide now happen?

However, five wins in the last eight, have, again, confounded the critics. Another win over United and a win over high flying Southampton were particular highlights.

Their recent victory over, in form, Aston Villa, sets them up to finish in a really respectable, or incredible, league position.

Through all the adversity of losing so many top players, including their undoubted superstar in Bony, Swansea have continued to defy the odds and their critics. As has their manager, an appointment met with apathy is now beginning to look a masterstroke.

If the Welsh side can finish strongly, not only will they achieve their record points total, but the August Manager of the Month, may be picking up an even bigger individual award.

[ad_pod id=’ffc-video’ align=’center’]

Leicester have the momentum to beat the drop….

Exactly one month ago, Leicester laboured to a 0-0 home draw with fellow strugglers Hull City. With 10 games to go at the time and seven points adrift; many assumed Leicester’s stay in the top flight had come to an end. Speculation off the pitch was being matched by listlessness on it and some were already a penning a red ‘R’ next to their name.

Fast forward a month and two wins on the spin, both with dramatic late winners have highlighted that The Foxes are from done; now only three points adrift of those outside the relegation zone and all the momentum – Leicester may just beat the drop.

West Ham at home may prove to be the pivotal fixture for Pearson’s men. After going ahead, they were soon pegged back by their visitors and for all of their effort and for all of their chances, including a missed penalty, it seemed that Leicester would only pick up the solitary point, probably not enough in their quest for survival. However, with only four minutes left Andy King prodded City’s season back to life and in turn reignited the relegation dogfight.

Prior to the last gasp win against The Hammers, Leicester were going nowhere fast; no wins in a three month period had left them marooned at the bottom of the table, where others were picking up points, the Foxes were not.

The fact that Leicester followed up that victory with another three points the following week, this time away at fellow strugglers West Brom, showed they were finally on a roll. Again Pearson’s men left it late, displaying the character and fight they suddenly seem to have found in the last two weeks. During the most turbulent times of their season, many questioned whether the manager had lost the dressing room. Those questions are certainly no longer being asked of his charges.

As well as being the team with all the momentum going into the final stretch of fixtures, Leicester’s run-in, on paper, seems a particularly kind one.  Winnable home fixtures against Swansea, Newcastle and QPR are complimented by away fixtures at Burnley and Sunderland. Not only do The Foxes have the opportunity to continue this positive run they now find themselves on, they also have the opportunity to stop their closest rivals from picking up points.

From a mood of despair, the dark clouds seemed to have lifted over the East Midlands; Pearson who once appeared like the world was against him was a more positive man in his post-match press conference at The Hawthorns. Of course winning football matches changes a lot, but they finally they actually are.

Compare the charge Leicester now seem to be on to the downward spiral their opponents from a month ago, Hull City, currently find themselves in. With fixtures against Liverpool, Arsenal, Man United and Tottenham to come, their plight seems to be worsening with every passing week. Leicester will feel they need to reel one team in and leap frog them; Steve Bruce’s men appear ripe for the picking.

If it comes down to the final game of the season, Leicester will fancy their chances against the hapless away version of QPR. Simply to make it to the last game from where they were a month ago is a testament to both Pearson and his players.

Zero to hero… Man United star England’s best winger?

Manchester United’s Ashley Young has enjoyed a fruitful few months in the Premier League of late. United are on a six-match winning streak and Young has featured in his preferred left wing position for the bulk of that time. Maximum points have seen United reach a high of second place, and Young has had a lot to do with his club’s success.

Their most recent and compelling win came against local rivals Manchester City in the second derby of the season, where Young performed at his very best scoring United’s opening goal to cancel out Sergio Aguero’s earlier effort. And as if that wasn’t enough, the 29-year-old then made assists for both Marouane Fellaini and Chris Smalling. With the match ending 4-2 in United’s favour, the Red Devils claimed an important scalp on their journey to cementing a top four finish.

United’s triumphant display against City was similar in style to when they faced both Liverpool and Tottenham a couple of games ago. United have utilised Young on the left wing and Juan Mata on the right to good effect. Both are pacey players able to spread the play out wide taking on the full backs and getting the ball into the box for team mates like Wayne Rooney.

Earlier in the season manager Louis van Gaal was ridiculed for using too many long balls to provide his forwards with goal scoring opportunities and though they were steadily climbing the table, the football being played was neither convincing nor attractive. Now Van Gaal has found a system and line up that works and Young is a key component of that.

Since joining from Aston Villa in 2011, Young has come in for his fair share of criticism due to numerous cases of diving and below par performances. But now under Van Gaal the winger is thriving and seems to be repairing his once tarnished reputation.

After adding his contribution last weekend Young has brought his total of Premier League assists to 58, meaning he features in the top 20 all-time list – quite an achievement for the winger who is still in his peak years.

The exploits of the trio of Young, Fellaini and Mata have been so impressive post Christmas that new boys Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao are finding it hard to get any starts. Where once all three looked like they’d be squeezed out of Van Gaal’s starting XI now the trio have turned their fortunes around and look irreplaceable.

Van Gaal is known for working well with players individually and as a team so it should be of no surprise that the Dutchman has found a way to return confidence and style back to Young’s performances focussing on improving the positives of his game rather than trying to remould him.

When everything was going so badly last season under David Moyes it was easy to pick apart and find faults in players like Young, so the fact that he is now regularly producing high quality crosses and finding the net himself shows how much difference 12 months can make.

Van Gaal would do well to stick with his current formation for the rest of the campaign and surely Young will be one of the first names he’ll add to his team sheet. If United do play in the Champions League and make a push for the title next year then Young will get the chance to prove once again on the biggest stages that he is one of, if not the, best wingers England has to offer.

Man United legend announces retirement

Rio Ferdinand has announced that he’s retired from professional football.

The former Manchester United, Leeds and West Ham centre-back spent the season just gone with QPR, but played infrequently as the Super Hoops slipped to relegation.

Following the drop, the London club announced that they would not be keeping the 36-year-old on, and Ferdinand has made the decision to end his long and glittering career.

He broke the news on BT Sport, and his official statement reads: “After 18 years as a professional footballer, I now feel it’s the right time for me to retire from the game that I love,

“As a 12-year-old boy, kicking around a football on the Friary Estate in Peckham, I never dreamt that I would play for my boyhood club West Ham, captain Leeds United, win the Champions League with Manchester United, or re-join my first manager Harry Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers.

“I will always regard the 81 times that I played for England, with immense pride. These are all treasured memories that will last a lifetime.

“Starting a career, every young man needs mentors. I found mine in Dave Goodwin, the district manager at Blackheath, and Tony Carr, the youth team manager at West Ham. They installed in me personality traits that lasted throughout my career. I will always be grateful to them.

“I’d like to thank Chris Ramsey, Harry Redknapp, David O’Leary and David Moyes who managed me at various times in my career, all the backroom staff who looked after me over the years, and the players that I played with. I would also like to thank the team who managed me off the pitch, Jamie Moralee and everybody at New Era.

“Winning trophies over my 13 years at Manchester United allowed me to achieve everything that I desired in football. From a young child to today, that was all I cared about.

“None of that would have been possible, without the genius of one man, Sir Alex Ferguson. His greatest accomplishment in my eyes will always be how he developed us as men, not just as footballers. He will in my opinion, always be the greatest manager in British football history.

“I’d also like to thank and pay tribute to my wife Rebecca and my family, including my mother and father, for their sacrifices, their encouragement and their advice throughout my career.

“And finally, I’d like to thank all the fans from all the clubs – for without them professional football would not exist. I will miss each and every one of you on my Saturday afternoons.”

Ferdinand won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and three League Cups during an illustrious time at the very top of the game, and also made 81 outings for England, playing in World Cups and European Championships.

The centre-back missed much of the end of the 2014/15 season to be with his wife, Rebecca Ellison, who died after a battle with cancer earlier this month.

Ferdinand is considered to be one of the finest defenders to have represented United and the Three Lions.
