Jasprit Bumrah, India’s all-formats fast bowler, has been hailed as the Leading Men’s Cricketer in the World in the 2025 edition of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, which is published on Tuesday.Bumrah, who capped his performances in 2024 by becoming the first Test bowler in history to claim 200 wickets at an average of less than 20 each, is described by ‘s editor Lawrence Booth as “quite simply the star of the year”. In total, he claimed 71 Test wickets at less than 15 each, while also bowling India to glory in the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean in June.Reflecting on Bumrah’s immense performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, in which he almost single-handedly carried India’s attack with 32 wickets at 13.06, Booth wrote: “He was so lethal, so uniquely challenging – a stacatto of limbs somehow forming a symphony – that runs scored off him should have counted double … he laid a claim to be considered the greatest of all time.”Bumrah’s compatriot, Smriti Mandhana, made it an India double by being named as Wisden’s Leading Women’s Cricketer in the World. Mandhana scored 1659 runs across formats in 2024 – the most by a woman in a calendar year of international cricket – including four ODI hundreds, which was another record. She capped her efforts with a second Test century, 149, in a ten-wicket win over South Africa in June.Nicholas Pooran was named as the Leading T20 Player in the World, while there was a strong Surrey theme to ‘s oldest awards – the Five Cricketers of the Year, an honour that a player can only win once in their career and which are judged by their performance during the English home season.Three of the players who helped land Surrey their third consecutive County Championship title – Gus Atkinson, Jamie Smith and Dan Worrall – are named among this year’s quintet, while Hampshire’s Liam Dawson and Sophie Ecclestone, England Women’s left-arm spinner, complete the set.Australia-born Worrall, who qualifies as an England player this summer, was central to Surrey’s success, claiming 52 wickets at an average of just 16 with his accurate, aggressive seamers. For Atkinson and Smith, however, their most notable performances came in their maiden summer as Test cricketers.Atkinson was England’s breakout star of the year, particularly at Lord’s, where he claimed 12 wickets on debut against West Indies, then a second five-for as well as a remarkable maiden century from No. 8 against Sri Lanka later in the summer. A hat-trick against New Zealand at Wellington helped him to 52 wickets at just 22 each in his first year as a Test cricketer.Harry Brook features on the front cover of the 2025 Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack•John Wisden & Co

Dawson, meanwhile, claimed 54 Championship wickets for Hampshire with his left-arm spin, and scored 956 runs at almost 60, with Booth stating that “there was no more effective all-rounder in county cricket”.Ecclestone, who endured a difficult winter at the T20 World Cup and the Women’s Ashes, nevertheless excelled in England’s unbeaten home summer. In addition to becoming her country’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is, she contributed 26 wickets across formats at under 10 each, and proved impressively frugal, conceding her runs at less than three an over. The Wisden Trophy for the year’s outstanding performance went to New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner. He claimed a matchwinning 13-wicket haul against India in the second Test at Pune, as New Zealand sealed an unassailable 2-0 lead in their Test series against India. Not only was this India’s first home series defeat since December 2012, the Kiwis also went on to claim a 3-0 whitewash, making it one of the greatest series wins of all time.In his annual Notes by the Editor, Booth takes aim at the sport’s global governance, labelling 2024 as the year “cricket gave up any claim to being properly administered”.In particular, he highlights Jay Shah’s overnight switch in December from honorary secretary of the BCCI to the role of ICC chair, even while the two boards were still at loggerheads over the venue allocations for the Champions Trophy that was due to be hosted by Pakistan in February.Booth also urges the ICC to devise a World Test Championship that is fit for purpose, describing the upcoming final between Australia and South Africa at Lord’s as a “shambles masquerading as a showpiece”.And while he congratulates the ECB on the windfall generated by the recent Hundred equity sale – with an anticipated £29 million set to be allocated to each of the 11 non-host counties – Booth adds a note of caution.”If The Hundred is to be judged solely on the bottom line, the ECB deserve a pat on the back … but, amid the jubilation, there was still – just about – room for scepticism. No matter how well the non-host counties have done from the arrangement, the gap with the host counties will eventually grow. And, though the ECB hope to expand the competition, what happens if the initial investment runs out? We are heading for utopia or dystopia, depending on your view.”This year’s Almanack also salutes James Anderson, who retired from Test cricket in July after 21 years and an England record 704 wickets, and pays tribute to two greats of English cricket who died in 2024.Derek Underwood is remembered by his former England captain, Mike Brearley, while Graham Thorpe, who tragically took his own life in August, is the subject of a moving piece by his widow, Amanda, who opens up on his mental-health struggles.”It’s so hard for those of us who do not suffer from this to understand how and why it occurs,” Amanda Thorpe writes. “For it to happen to Graham, who was essentially a happy person, is a lesson for us all. He tried many therapies and medications – he tried so hard to beat it… He also felt immense shame about how he was, but of course there should be no stigma to suffering as he did. Having watched it play out, I could see it is a physical illness – and it is real. It felt like he was in the grip of a sickness he just couldn’t get out of.”

Lionel Messi is 'divine' but Cristiano Ronaldo 'revolutionised football' – Ex-Juventus star weighs in on GOAT debate and insists Argentina and Portugal icons are 'opposites'

Former Juventus winger and ex-Italy international Federico Bernardeschi chimed in on the Cristiano Ronaldo-Lionel Messi debate. The Bologna player heaped praise on the two icons and explained what makes the duo different from each other. While Messi was called "divine," Ronaldo was hailed as someone who "revolutionized football" and is admired by numerous athletes.

  • Ronaldo & Messi: Epitomes of longevity

Ronaldo and Messi will go down as perhaps two of the greatest footballers to ever exist. The duo share 13 Ballons d'Or between them, with the Portuguese winning five times and the Argentine lifting the award an unprecedented eight times. They "shared the same stage for 15 years", pushing each other to push their own limits and engraving their names in football history for eternity.

Twilight of their careers away from Europe

Ronaldo and Messi dominated world football for nearly two decades, before going their respective ways away from Europe. The 40-year-old now plies his trade for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, where he has already plundered over a century of goals. He's eyeing a final flourish with Portugal at next year's World Cup amid his hunger to complete 1,000 career goals.

Messi, meanwhile, has 'completed football' after lifting the only trophy missing from his cabinet in 2022: the World Cup. After leaving Barcelona in 2021, he spent two middling seasons at Paris Saint-Germain, before heading to the MLS with David Beckham's Inter Miami.

  • Bernardeschi explains the difference between Messi and Ronaldo

Speaking to , Bernardeschi said: "They're two different worlds. Like Cristiano, Messi is something you struggle to understand as a player. But they're opposites: Messi catches your eye, he does things that seem unreal, he has an aura that doesn't belong in this world. Cristiano has another characteristic: he revolutionized football and sport in general. Messi, like [Diego] Maradona, seems divine. If athletes today pay attention to every detail of their preparation, it's thanks to Cristiano."

Wayne Rooney reveals 'brilliant' PlayStation game that was 'massive part' of Man Utd's success under Sir Alex Ferguson

Wayne Rooney has revealed how playing a "brilliant" game on PlayStation played a "massive part" in Manchester United's success under Sir Alex Ferguson. Rooney helped United win 10 trophies in the latter stages of the glorious Ferguson era, including five Premier League titles and one Champions League.

Man Utd players loved SOCOM game

Rooney was an integral part of the dominant Manchester United side under Ferguson, which established themselves as one of the greatest teams in Premier League history. The legendary forward, who finished his career at Old Trafford as United's record goalscorer, has revealed how playing five-versus-five on the PlayStation Portable (PSP) army game SOCOM contributed to the Red Devils' success.

AdvertisementAFP'Big part of our success was playing on the PSP'

Speaking on his BBC podcast The Wayne Rooney Show, the former England international said: "I really believe a big part of our success was playing on the PSP. It got us communicating more – we used to play it on the plane, on the team bus. It would be me, Rio [Ferdinand], Michael Carrick, John O'Shea, Wes Brown. You have to talk, you have to tactically be right, go and revive people when they get killed and it was a massive part of our success – ask any of those players, it was brilliant."

One United star was left 'annoyed'

Rooney, however, did admit that one United player was not a fan of the game, as he added: "How you played that game reflected that player, how they play the game. Michael Carrick was a little sneaky calm one, you would be lying down hiding and you'd hear a little grenade bouncing by where he'd thrown it. I was just all in, straight in, frontline of the trenches, get in there.

"Edwin van der Sar used to get annoyed, because we're on the team bus and there's just shouting on the team bus all over the place where you are telling people where you are. Sometimes if they have got one player left, you communicate, so you flank them, go and get them. Van der Sar used to get annoyed and move, he used to try and get as far away from us as possible!"

Better than Muniz: 49ers open first talks to sign "ridiculous" CF for Leeds

Leeds United have now officially confirmed Anton Stach’s arrival on the scene, with £17.4m forked out on the midfield talent.

Stach joining from Hoffenheim very much continues the trend of the Whites diving into the Bundesliga for summer buys, with Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen a reported target from Daniel Farke’s homeland too.

The newly promoted side has been looking closer to home when attempting to enhance their attacking personnel, however, with Fulham attacker Rodrigo Muniz’s signature still being pursued.

However, he isn’t the only striker catching the Whites’ eye.

Fulham's RodrigoMunizcelebrates scoring their third goal

Leeds make surprise approach for striker

One of the hurdles continuing to trip Leeds up in their advances for Muniz will surely be his extortionate £50m price tag.

This is a risky amount of money to splurge, considering this signing whirring into motion would then make Muniz Leeds’ most expensive purchase in history, eclipsing Georginio Rutter’s £35.5m valuation.

Rodrigo Muniz Premier League stats – Fulham

He does have a healthy 17 Premier League strikes next to his name for the Cottagers, but a far cheaper move might soon be on the cards for the Whites to land a more potent finisher.

Indeed, reports from Italy indicate that Leeds have made an approach to sign wantaway Inter Milan Mehdi Taremi over a surprise move this summer, with the move surely costing the Premier League newcomers less than Muniz’s speculated £50m, owing to the Iranian striker being 33 years of age.

Porto's Mehdi Taremi

Taremi’s veteran status shouldn’t put Leeds off making the move a reality, though, with the former FC Porto man a feared goal machine when performing at the top of his game, which could make him an even better signing than Muniz entering the ranks.

How Taremi could be a better signing than Muniz

Muniz does have the slight edge of possessing Premier League experience on his side, but his overall numbers across his entire career are blown out of the water by Taremi’s usual Midas touch in front of goal.

The Fulham number nine is only able to boast an unconvincing 40 goals across his career to date – with a large chunk of those coming at Craven Cottage – meaning he could well find the pressures of being Leeds’ leading man during a relegation fight to be too much.

On the contrary, the well-travelled Taremi would likely thrive with the same burden above his head, with Premier League outfit Chelsea already well aware of the magic the 33-year-old can produce when he fired home this acrobatic effort against them in the Champions League.

Wherever he’s been – minus an up-and-down spell in Serie A with Inter – the 6-foot-2 menace has largely been an overwhelming success.

Indeed, he boasts a “ridiculous” goal record, across his extensive playing days in the words of Rio Ferdinand.

Indeed, the Iranian regular has a colossal haul of 202 goals and 101 assists from 445 career outings, with a bumper 95 of those strikes coming in Portugal when he led the line for Porto with some confidence.

He has experienced a bump in the road at Inter, but he hasn’t fallen off the wagon completely, with three goals and nine assists coming his way at the San Siro.

Mehdi Taremi

Muniz does have age on his side, too, with the potential for the Brazilian to grow into a more threatening, sharp-shooting presence under Farke’s wing.

But, if the Whites are hesitant to shell out that £50m, Taremi is surely their next best bet, as West Yorkshire is then exposed to the 33-year-old’s lethal nature.

Leeds United are in contention to land a star who would be an even better addition than Anton Stach.

Babar and Tahir fifties set up Stallions' big win

No one apart from Imam-ul-Haq showed fight in the 337-run chase as Lions went down by 133 runs

Babar Azam scored 76 in 79 balls•PCB

Babar Azam top-scored with 76 to help Stallions thump Shaheen Shah Afridi’s Lions by 133 runs in the second match of the Champions Cup in Faisalabad. Half-centuries from four batters, including Tayyab Tahir, captain Mohammad Haris and Hussain Talat, helped Stallions amass 336 for 5 in their 50 overs. It was a team effort with the ball, too, with all six Stallions bowlers among the wickets. Haris Rauf picked up three wickets before Mohammad Ali’s 2 for 18 set the tone up top for a dominant Stallions performance as Lions failed to get stuck into the chase. Imam-ul-Haq offered the only real resistance, and though his 78 was the highest score of the match, none of his team-mates managed even 30.Stallions got off to a slow but steady start after their captain Haris elected to bat. Shan Masood and Babar struck up a 39-run partnership to pick up the pace before left-arm wristspinner Faisal Akram cleaned up Masood. Babar, who trudged through the first half of his innings, soon found his rhythm, guiding his side through the middle overs alongside Tahir, whose breezy 74 came off just 72 balls. It set the stage for blistering cameos from Haris and Talat towards the end, with 118 runs coming off the final ten overs.Ali, who had an inconsistent Test series against Bangladesh, struck in the first over of the chase to remove wicketkeeper-batter Sajjad Ali. He followed it up by getting rid of Abdullah Shafique in the fifth over. Lions kept losing wickets at regular intervals but Imam fought a lone hand. The asking rate, though, was always rising, and the game was over as a contest by the time Jahandad Khan trapped him in front.Shaheen, who had an indifferent day with the ball, managed a late flurry with the bat to get his side over 200 before Rauf returned to dismiss him and Sirajuddin, rubber-stamping a routine victory.

Brook leads Superchargers to third win in a row as Originals fluff chase

Matty Hurst hits 78 from 45 but visitors fail to capitalise on platform of 90-run opening stand

Northern Superchargers made it two wins from two over Manchester Originals in the northern derbies at Headingley in the Hundred on Sunday. Harry Brook’s side beat the team from the other side of the Pennines by 14 runs to follow success for Hollie Armitage’s team earlier in the day.Originals won the toss and chose to bowl, which looked a great choice with rain falling before the start of the match and thick clouds overhead. Unsurprisingly then, Superchargers got off to a slow start with the bat, as Fazalhaq Farooqi took a wicket with the very first ball of the match.Graham Clark and captain Brook rebuilt the innings with a well-paced 50 partnership. Brook went on to score an explosive 58 off 33, before being caught out by Scott Currie low to the ground at mid-off.After a strong middle to the home side’s innings, Originals came back strongly at the end to restrict Superchargers to 167 for 5.Mitchell Santner bowled a key spell•Getty Images

Captain Phil Salt and Matty Hurst got Originals’ innings off to a very promising start with 90 for the opening partnership. Salt scoring 40 from 27, while the impressive Hurst top-scored with 78 from 45.Unfortunately for the winless Originals, they then capitulated from 90 for 1 to 128 for 4 thanks to some game-turning run-outs and Mitchell Santner, who took 2 for 23. When Hurst departed, Originals required 29 from 13, but they were unable to get over the line, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the table and Superchargers up into third.Meerkat Match Hero Brook said: “I felt like they were the favourites coming out of the powerplay, but we bowled unbelievably well at the death to get the win.”We didn’t have the batting powerplay that we wanted, but we stuck to our task. The outfield is so quick here that I didn’t feel like I needed to hit many balls in the air, so I was just trying to pierce the gaps and it worked. I was just trying to stay in until the end, so I could put pressure on them at the end. I felt good at the start and thankfully I hit a few gaps.”We’ve always got a take-wickets mentality, but we obviously had to think about that a bit more when we didn’t get a wicket in powerplay, and they were 90 without loss. So, I tossed the ball to [Adil] Rashid and Mitch [Santner], and they did a really good job in getting some crucial wickets that helped us get the win.”

Nottingham Forest hold talks to sign £12m+ winger who could replace Elanga

Amid rumours that they’ve already had to reject a bid worth £45m to sell Anthony Elanga, Nottingham Forest have now reportedly opened talks to sign a possible replacement.

Nottingham Forest reject Newcastle's Elanga bid

After securing a shock place in the Europa Conference League in an excellent season last time out, Nottingham Forest are in no position to sell key players. But that hasn’t stopped certain clubs from testing the waters. Among them, Newcastle United reportedly formalised their interest in Elanga with an offer worth £45m earlier this week, only to see that bid rejected by those at the City Ground.

There’s still plenty of time remaining in the summer transfer window, however, and Forest will be well aware that Newcastle could yet come calling a second time.

If that does happen, then preparing for Elanga’s exit in a worst-case scenario would not be a bad idea for all involved at the City Ground. Already, on that front, Forest have attempted and failed to sign Timothy Weah from Juventus and have also been linked with versatile AC Milan midfielder Yunus Musah.

YunusMusahof the U.S. in action with England's Jude Bellingham

Whether either of those options possess the quality to replace Elanga is the big question. One man who is unlikely to face problems in that regard is Igor Jesus. The Botafogo forward is reportedly on his way to the Midlands alongside teammate Jair Cunha following their Club World Cup campaign.

The former has already stolen plenty of headlines with his winning goal against Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain and is seemingly about to take the Premier League by storm.

Nottingham Forest open talks to sign "elite" new star after Weah rejection

They’ve instantly turned towards another option.

ByTom Cunningham Jun 27, 2025

Jesus and Cuiabano may not be the only Club World Cup stars to arrive, either, amid reports that Forest have opened talks to sign another attacking target.

Nottingham Forest open talks to sign Pepe

According to ESPN Brazil, Nottingham Forest have now opened talks to sign Pepe from FC Porto, who are demanding over €15m (£12m) to sell their 28-year-old winger this summer.

An experienced winger who scored at the Club World Cup for Porto in a 4-4 draw against Al-Ahly this summer, Pepe would offer Forest instant depth and may even be asked to replace Elanga if the Swede joins Newcastle.

The pressure would instantly be on Pepe if he did step in for Elanga and although his experience could prove to be invaluable, questions will be asked about his ability to match the 22-year-old’s output.

As a versatile backup who can play all across the frontline, however, the Porto man represents an ideal choice as Forest step into European football. At just over £12m too, it’s not a deal that Evangelos Marinakis will need to splash out on for Nuno Espirito Santo in the coming months.

£50k-a-week ace could now be first Newcastle player to leave this summer

An “excellent” Newcastle United player is thought to be a priority target for one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs this summer.

Newcastle players who could leave this summer

While the Magpies are expecting a busy summer transfer window in terms of new signings, especially if Champions League football is secured this weekend, there are plenty of current star names being linked with exits before next season gets underway.

Alexander Isak is the player that Newcastle will be most desperate to retain, but the Swede is believed to be the subject of interest from some huge clubs such as Liverpool and Arsenal.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their first goal

Meanwhile, the Reds could reportedly be back in for Anthony Gordon this summer, having shown a willingness to snap him up last year. They see him as a potential replacement for Luis Diaz, although signing Florian Wirtz would surely put paid to their interest in the Magpies ace.

There are others who Newcastle want to ensure are still at the club in 2025/26, like Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali. However, another exit claim regarding another individual has emerged.

"Excellent" Newcastle player wanted by Man City

According to Fabrizio Romano on X, Manchester City are targeting a move for Newcastle defender Tino Livramento as their primary right-back target, with the 22-year-old potentially becoming the first player to leave St James’ Park this summer despite the rumours elsewhere:

Losing Livramento would be a setback for the Magpies, considering he has proven to be the natural heir to Kieran Trippier in his position, and still has his best years ahead of him.

The £50,000-a-week Englishman has enjoyed an impressive season for Newcastle, starting 31 of his side’s 37 Premier League matches and being lauded by Eddie Howe:

“Athletically, Tino’s excellent and we know that, and we’ve seen that since he’s come to the football club, but to have that responsibility of playing left-back on the opposite side to his natural foot and play the way he has and also build the relationship with Harvey [Barnes] that he has done.”

If Livramento ultimately decides that he would rather join City than stay at Newcastle, Paul Mitchell must do all he can to ensure that the club receives huge money for him in order to sign a top-quality replacement.
