Man City In Talks To Sign "Incredible" £150k-p/w Attacker

Manchester City are interested in signing West Ham star Lucas Paqueta, with talks taking place over a potential transfer this week, according to Fabrizio Romano.

What’s the latest Man City transfer news?

Those at the Etihad Stadium have added to Pep Guardiola’s squad this summer by signing a new midfielder and centre-back. Croatia internationals Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol have moved to the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League winners from Chelsea and RB Leipzig respectively, but another new addition could be on the cards before the September 1 deadline.

City have lost Ilkay Gundogan to FC Barcelona and Riyad Mahrez to Al-Ahli this summer, so a new attacker to replace the latter appears to be on the to-do list in Manchester.

There have been a number of players mentioned, including Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise, with reports even claiming that a deal is ‘very probable’. Rennes’ Jeremy Doku is another winger who has been linked to the Etihad, but it appears as if Paqueta is also of interest to Guardiola and co.

Transfer expert Romano took to X in the last 24 hours to share what he’s heard on Man City and Paqueta. The Italian stated that Man City have a concrete interest in the player and that talks have taken place this week, although a deal won’t be easy.

“Manchester City have concrete interest in Lucas Paqueta. Talks took place with West Ham this week.

“Not an easy negotiation but City have added him to summer targets list, as @marcoconterio @geglobo reported.”

How good is Lucas Paqueta?

Paqueta began his career on the books with Brazilian side Flamengo and made a big-money move to AC Milan back in 2019. He spent just 18 months and made 44 appearances for Milan before moving to France with Lyon, where he went on to turn out on 80 appearances, contributing to 34 goals.

The 25-year-old then joined West Ham last summer and helped the Hammers win the Europa Conference League, contributing to 12 goals during his first season at the London Stadium.

Primarily a left-footed attacking midfielder who can also play in a deeper role, Paqueta is valued at a career-high €45m by Transfermarkt and was hailed by Declan Rice last season, who said:

“He’s incredible, honestly, he’s absolutely incredible. It’s obviously taken him a while to settle into the Premier League and into the training ground, moving his family over.

"I think now you’re seeing the real Lucas. Some of the stuff he does, even in training, it’s just mind-boggling how good he is.”

As per FBref, the £150,000-a-week attacker has ranked in the top 1% for attacking midfielders and wingers for tackles and blocks over the past 12 months, showing the defensive output he could offer to Guardiola’s side in the top flight.

He also ranks highly for passes into the final third and through balls, showing the quality he also has when on the ball, so it could prove to be a shrewd deal, however, it doesn’t appear to be a straightforward one but one that could well develop over the coming days.

Essex complete historic unbeaten season as Yorkshire feel the pain

Sam Cook, a complete unknown only a fee weeks ago, personified a season of excellence as he took 5 for 20 to skittle Yorkshire for 74 and round off a tumultuous season for Essex during which they have remained unbeaten in the Specsavers County Championship for the first time in their history. The champions’ 10th victory of the 14-game campaign was followed by resounding applause and sprays of champagne post-match as they received the Championship trophy for the first time in 25 years. It was the moment they had waited for since the title was claimed a fortnight ago when they still had two games to play. For Yorkshire, who were in the same celebratory mood just two summers ago, their total was their lowest since 1999 as they succumbed by a massive 376-run defeat in just 29 overs. There were still 25 overs remaining in the day when Matt Fisher was left on his back by Neil Wagner to end the season. It was as well they claimed the points required to avoid relegation on the first day otherwise their feeble effort could have been terminal.Cook, who made his first-class debut for his home county less than two months ago, had taken a career-best 5 for 18 in the second innings at Southampton in the last game. The second five-fer of his embryonic career came before he returns next week to Loughborough University for the final year of his history degree course.Cook put the skids under a Yorkshire top-order chasing an unlikely 451 to win with four wickets in 32 balls in a six-over, pre-tea burst.Adam Lyth looked surprised to be given out caught behind to Cook’s second ball, and Kraigg Brathwaite played down the wrong line to be lbw to Porter in the next over. Alex Lees’s middle stump was sent cartwheeling by Cook and Yorkshire were already on an inexorable slide at 17 for three in the sixth over.Cook claimed his third wicket for 11 runs when the Ashes-bound Gary Ballance fell lbw for just five. Jack Leaning was stuck in his crease playing forward and edging to James Foster to give Cook wicket No4.Simon Harmer joined the party when Andrew Hodd became his latest lbw victim. Thirty-five for six.Essex announced at the tea interval that Porter had signed a two-year contract extension taking him through to the end of the 2020 season. He had a double celebration first ball after the break when he had Steven Patterson caught behind to claim his 200th first-class wicket for the county. That preceded Cook’s fifth wicket with his first ball upon his return for a second spell. Jack Brooks hung out his bat and played tamely into Varun Chopra’s hands at first slip. Thirty-seven for six at tea had become 38 for eight.Karl Carver helped Matt Fisher put on 34 for the penultimate wicket in nine overs to give some respectability to the score before he departed lbw for nine. Fisher, who had taken three Essex second-innings wickets for 69, was the only batsman to make it into double figures. He was the last man to go for 25, caught behind for Foster’s eighth catch of the match, after Wagner had him flailing with a bouncer. It meant Division One’s leading wicket-takers had shared 147 Championship wickets with Porter leading the way with 75 from Harmer. At the start of the day, Essex’s overnight second-wicket century stand ended in the fourth over when Dan Lawrence went lbw to give Coad his 50th and last Championship wicket of the season. Lawrence’s 83 came from 156 balls, and with Nick Browne he put on 139 in 49 overs to lift Essex from 6 for 2 on the second afternoon.Browne followed on the same personal score when Lyth made amends for a difficult dropped catch chance when the opener was 59. This time, Lyth held on to a snick at second slip to end Browne’s 166-ball innings that including 11 boundaries. James Foster then became the 10th lbw victim of the match to give Fisher the first of three wickets. That brought together ten Doeschate and Harmer, who put on 75 in 21 overs for the sixth wicket. Ten Doeschate’s innings was full of nudges and nurdles, eight of them going to the boundary, and a ninth clearing the ropes at long leg.He was finally out straight after lunch, in Fisher’s second over with the new-ball when ten Doeschate tried to withdraw his bat and was caught behind. The partnership with Harmer was worth 75 in 21 overs with the captain departing for a 92-ball 57 with eight fours and a six.Harmer claimed his second half-century of the match, following his 64 in the first innings, when he clubbed Fisher through the covers from the 79th ball he faced. The seventh-wicket pair added 42 in eight overs with Neil Wagner, whose bright and breezy 23 came from 26.before he edged to second slip to give Fisher his third wicket at a personal cost of 69.Ten Doeschate called his batsmen in 50 minutes after lunch following the second ball of the 96th over, when Porter hit the second of two fours in a five-ball 10. Essex had reached 334 for 7 without the requirement for the injured Tom Westley to bat.

Focus more on improvement, not results' – Bumrah

The 23-year old has made strong strides towards becoming a rounded bowler and has lately proven to be proficient at picking wickets with length deliveries

Jasprit Bumrah appeals•AFP

A standout feature of Jasprit Bumrah’s young career thus far has been his willingness and ability to learn and evolve. While “learning” rolls off many cricketers’ tongues as a stock cliché, Bumrah means it. Last year, when he said he had learnt something new in each of his first three seasons in the IPL, it wasn’t tall talk. In 2013, Bumrah was schooled in the art of pre-game preparation and managing different situations. When he became one of Mumbai Indians’ lead bowlers next year, he absorbed the lessons of carrying good form and sustaining it over a length of time. Even his injury was an opportunity to learn: ahead of the 2015 edition, he sought out senior bowlers to understand how to prepare for a comeback. At 23, Bumrah has already made strong strides towards becoming a more rounded bowler. From someone who relied heavily on an amalgam of a whippety, awkward action, inch-perfect yorkers and slower deliveries, he has now proven to be adept at taking wickets with length deliveries. During India’s 5-0 ODI thumping of Sri Lanka recently, Bumrah emerged as the leading wicket-taker on either side with 15 scalps at an economy-rate of less than four and was named Man of the Series. Nine of those wickets came via deliveries that were pitched either on good length or on the shorter side of it. The yorkers made an appearance only on eight occasions, thus retaining their shock value. He also straddled the twin roles of opening the bowling and operating at the death.Bumrah’s rapid growth wasn’t lost on his captain Virat Kohli, who called him India’s “most effective short-format bowler” in the last year and a half. “He has really worked on his bowling a lot – especially his length ball, which has picked up more pace,” Kohli said at the end of the series. “It’s not only about yorkers and slower balls anymore. He can bowl a good length ball and nick you off as well, which I think is the biggest improvement in his bowling. Credit to him for shaping his game in that way.”By his own admission, Bumrah has had many mentors right from Sachin Tendulkar to Ricky Ponting and Lasith Malinga to Shane Bond. He feels much of his improvement is down to relentlessly picking another bowler’s brain – be it a peer or a senior. “We just want to improve all the time,” Bumrah said on the eve of the first T20I against Australia in Ranchi. “We keep asking questions to each other and we keep learning from the senior players – what else we can do, how to improve ourselves, how to adapt to different conditions and different wickets. So, our main focus is that. We don’t focus on the results. We just want to focus on the training and we want to get better and better after each and every game.”With Ashish Nehra’s return, Bumrah will also have another familiar mentor to lean on for advice. Earlier this year, Bumrah and Nehra combined to throttle England by five runs in Nagpur. Despite an age difference of 15 years, Bumrah enjoys a great comfort level with his senior partner. “He is a very experienced player and I have played some cricket with him during the T20 World Cup,” Bumrah said. “It’s always great fun playing alongside him. He has got plenty of experience to share and is very helpful. As a youngster, I keep asking him questions and seek his advice. The team atmosphere also becomes very good with his presence, so it’s very nice to see him back.”With rain thwarting India’s training session on Friday, some of the players, including MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, tried their hand at foot-volley in the dressing room balcony. Bumrah appeared to stand in a corner and watch them in action. Don’t be surprised if he learns a few tricks there and masters those, too.

Crystal Palace Could Sign Massive £14k-p/w Ayew Upgrade

Crystal Palace are one of several Premier League clubs whose transfer windows have done nothing to ease any relegation concerns.

What's the latest Crystal Palace transfer news?

This has been recognised by Roy Hodgson, who has expressed concerns over squad depth, saying:

"We’ve lost five senior players from last season and brought one in – Jefferson Lerma; he’s good and we’re happy to have him in – but there is still that hole of five senior players in the squad, two of whom were two of the real stars of the team.

“There’s a bit of work for the chairman and sporting director to do between now and the end of August.”

Therefore, new target Ruben Vargas would be a possible way of upgrading the frontline.

According to the Daily Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, the Eagles are looking at taking the Augsburg forward out on loan.

He took to Twitter last week to report: "Crystal Palace have been assessing midfielders during the window. They've looked at Ruben Vargas at FC Augsburg as a possible loan. Leeds' Crysencio Summerville is admired but would need to determine LUFC plans for him next season."

Who is Ruben Vargas?

The Swiss has been at Augsburg for four years, and upon his arrival, the club’s Managing Director Stefan Reuter described the player as a “great addition” to the squad.

During this time, he has become one of the German outfit’s most reliable performers, appearing in 115 of the last 136 Bundesliga games.

Last season, in just 13 domestic starts, the £14k-per-week “threat” – as lauded by reporter Josh Bunting – recorded seven goal involvements and averaged the second-most dribbles per game (0.9) in the entire squad.

Vargas also ranks impressively across the continent, sitting within the best 11% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for non-penalty goals, assists, progressive carries, successful take-ons, touches in the attacking penalty area, and progressive passes received, all per 90.

From a Crystal Palace perspective, a player of this quality and effervescence means he is a more useful asset than the frustrating Jordan Ayew.

Similarly, both players have appeared across the frontline for their respective clubs (Ayew as centre-forward and winger, and Vargas mainly as the latter), demonstrating an attack-minded versatility, however, Vargas comfortably outperforms the Ghanaian in this role.

Comparatively, Ayew ranks within the lowest 38% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for non-penalty goals, shots, shot-creating actions, progressive passes, progressive carries and touches in the attacking penalty area, all per 90.

Jordan Ayew

Moreover, Ayew will turn 32 in September, and a move for Vargas would follow in the footsteps of Matheus Franca, as Palace attempt to create a younger and more dynamic squad.

This move could be crucial as the club has already lost Wilfried Zaha, with Michael Olise possibly destined for the same outcome.

Last term, these technicians registered 23 goal contributions between them, and for a mid-table side like Crystal Palace, who were briefly threatened by relegation before the return of Hodgson, are incredibly high numbers.

As well as being an upgrade to Ayew, Vargas can also serve as support and an understudy to Eberechi Eze.

FBref’s comparison tool likens their play styles so if the Englishman suffers a similar length of injury that kept him out for 162 days in 2021, then Vargas could be to soften any potential blow.

£35k-p/w Leeds Star Linked With Move To Saudi Arabia

An update has emerged on interest in one of Leeds United's last-remaining members of their previous Championship promotion-winning campaign…

What's the latest Leeds transfer news?

According to talkSPORT, Saudi Arabian side Al Qadsiah are keen on a deal to sign Whites captain Liam Cooper during the summer transfer window.

The report claims that the Scotland international has a 'lucrative' offer to ditch the Yorkshire-based team as Robbie Fowler attempts to snap him up for his club.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

However, it does not state how much they are willing to offer Leeds for his services or how open Daniel Farke is to cashing in on the experienced central defender.

Leeds kick off their 2023/24 season against Cardiff at Elland Road on Sunday and the former Chesterfield titan started the final pre-season friendly against Hearts.

Should Leeds sell Liam Cooper?

Farke must avoid his first major blunder in charge of the club, during his debut window at the helm, by ensuring that Cooper is not sold before the deadline.

The Leeds boss must fight to retain the 31-year-old titan as he is a proven Championship performer who also showcased his ability at Premier League level prior to last season.

The veteran campaigner averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.73 during the 2022/23 term, which was the ninth-best score within the squad.

However, Cooper was in the top three outfield performers for Leeds throughout the 2020/21 and 2021/22 top-flight campaigns. This illustrates how important he was to the club's survival at that level for two years before last season's implosion that led to a relegation back to the second tier.

The Scottish tank also knows exactly what it takes to get out of this division as he was one of the team's best players during the 2019/20 promotion-winning success under Marcelo Bielsa.

Leeds defender Liam Cooper.

Cooper averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.07 across 38 Championship matches, which made him the fifth-best outfielder at the club, as he dominated opposition attackers with a duel success rate of 62% and helped the side to keep 15 clean sheets in total.

These statistics suggest that the impressive central defender has the quality to be an outstanding player for Farke at the heart of the backline, particularly at this level, and that is one reason why losing him would be a huge mistake by the German head coach.

Another reason would be the experience that the Whites would lose by allowing the captain to depart. Cooper is one of the few remaining regular starters from their last promotion, alongside Patrick Bamford, Jack Harrison, and Luke Ayling, and his know-how could be vital in terms of helping the younger players adapt to the pressure whilst maintaining a high standard from those around him.

Therefore, selling the £35k-per-week colossus, who goalkeeper Tommy Lee once claimed has a "Ramos-style" about him at centre-back, would be a blunder by Farke and the club for multiple key reasons.

The former Norwich City tactician must now convince, firstly, the decision-makers at board level to reject offers for Cooper and, secondly, the player himself to turn down advances from Fowler's Saudi outfit in order to lead the charge for promotion back to the Premier League this season.

Everton Plot Move For £30m Ligue 1 "Revelation"

Everton have kicked off their Premier League campaign but are still on the look out for new additions to strengthen the squad, and now a fresh update has emerged on the club's pursuit of a potential target.

What's the latest on Everton's interest in Hugo Ekitike?

According to journalist and transfer insider Rudy Galetti, Everton are "pushing hard" to sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Hugo Ekitike before the transfer window closes on the 1st of September.

Galetti took to Twitter to reveal:

"#Everton are pushing hard for #Ekitike: talks with #PSG are progressing at a good pace."

"Understand the club is speeding things up to anticipate the competition of Eintracht and other 🇪🇺 teams interested in the ST."

"Hugo hasn't made a decision on his future yet."

How much will Hugo Ekitike cost?

There is no doubt that Sean Dyche will be desperate to improve the attacking threat at Goodison Park this summer, following a torrid Premier League campaign last season that left them struggling to create and convert goal-scoring opportunities throughout.

Everton scored the second-fewest goals (34) in the entirety of the top flight last season, with only Wolverhampton Wanderers hitting the back of the net on fewer occasions (31), something that must massively improve if they are to avoid another relegation scrap.

Indeed, the Toffees have secured the signings of Youssef Chermiti and Arnaut Danjuma already, but with Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggling to maintain his fitness and Dwight McNeil set to be side-lined for weeks with an ankle injury, there is definitely still to room to add depth and quality in the final third.

Ekitike is a fantastic youth prospect who has struggled for game-time at PSG over his first season in Paris, something the Frenchman would have been prepared for due to competing with Kylian Mbappe for the position in the highly-competitive front three.

hugo-ekitike-everton-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

Nevertheless, the 21-year-old scored three goals, registered four assists and created three big chances over 25 Ligue 1 appearances, despite only making 12 starts and averaging 46 minutes per game, according to SofaScore.

Not only that, Ekitike ranks in the top 5% of his positional peers across the top five European leagues per 90 minutes played for assists, interceptions and pass completion, as well as ranking in the top 20% for tackles won and blocks too, demonstrating that he is a huge asset in his role.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbed the France U21 forward a "revelation" and has waxed lyrical about his strengths claiming he is a complete forward who "can also play as an inside forward" as well as being "fast & powerful" with "superb flair, agility & coordination for a player of his size".

Ekitike currently earns £80k-per-week, as per FBref, which would make him one of the highest earners at Goodison Park, and it has been reported that PSG would command a fee of around €35m (£30m) to part ways with their player permanently.

With that being said, the signing of Ekitike could be the final piece to add much-needed quality in the final third this season and if he can continue to develop his skills at Goodison Park, he could be massively valuable to Everton for many years to come.

Tottenham: Spurs Could Make "Ridiculous" Striker Signing

Italian journalist Davide Chinellato has shared an update on Tottenham Hotspur's striker plans with Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic in the running to succeed Harry Kane.

Who will Spurs replace Kane with?

The departure of Spurs legend Kane leaves a gaping hole in Ange Postecoglou's squad as the new season gets underway, and it's a problem which needs to be solved quickly.

Kane's transfer to Bayern Munich was sealed after Tottenham agreed a €100 million (£86m) plus an extra €20 million (£17.2m) in possible add-ons, but there is an argument to be made that the 30-year-old is practically irreplaceable.

Postecoglou, speaking after the striker's move to Bayern, admitted that he knew it had been coming for a long time.

“I had a conversation with Harry the first day he arrived and he was up front and honest, and I was the same,” the 57-year-old said ahead of their opener against Brentford on Sunday.

“You get an indication there that he kind of made up his mind: that if the clubs agreed he would go, particularly if it was before the first game. That was my preference as well.

“There's nothing along the way that's sort of made me feel there's anything other than this outcome. None of these things happen in isolation, everyone is pretty clued into to what's going on, so from my perspective I hadn't received anything from Harry, the club or anyone else to suggest to me anything had changed about his stance."

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

Montpellier striker Elye Wahi and Gent's Gift Orban, as well as Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku, have all been linked with moves to Spurs following Kane's exit.

Vlahovic, who the Lilywhites have held a long-standing interest in, is another name to be mentioned as a candidate to step into Kane's shoes.

That is according to Chinellato, who wrote for La Gazzetta dello Sport that the attacker "could come back into the news" as Tottenham draw up a shortlist of striker targets.

"Tottenham had monitored the Serbian's situation last month," wrote the reporter.

"But had given up when it seemed that Kane would have to stay. Now it could come back into the news, provided that Levy decides to invest the 80 million (£69 million) that Juve values him in the 23-year-old. And that Dusan decides that a season at Tottenham."

How good is Dusan Vlahovic?

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.

Vlahovic finished the 2022/2023 Serie A campaign as Juventus' top scorer with 10 goals.

While that isn't exactly mouth-watering, the striker did bag 17 in 21 Italian top flight appearances for Fiorentina the previous campaign.

Vlahovic is a striker of real quality when playing at his very best, a sentiment echoed by pundit Micah Richards, who lavished praise on him back in late 2021.

“I have watched him a couple of times now,” Richards told BBC Radio Five Live (via The Independent).

“He is lightning. It’s ridiculous. He has got 16 in 18 this season. His left foot is like a wand. I am telling you now, he is everything, he is everything you need.”

However, Vlahovic's marquee price tag of around £69 million could well prove a sticking point for Spurs.
