Nottingham Forest are the kings when it comes to flexing their muscles in the transfer market and their return to the Premier League in 2022 only accentuated that claim.
To readily equip themselves for a battle against relegation, the Reds sought to sign 30 new players across the summer and January window.
Although there were some success stories, namely Morgan Gibbs-White, Taiwo Awoniyi, Serge Aurier and Keylor Navas, most of their signings have rarely featured since joining the club, or have already departed.
Jesse Lingard, for instance, was Forest's third-highest earner on £80k-per-week, as per Capology, but the hype surrounding him proved to weigh too heavy on his shoulders as he failed to register a single goal contribution in the Premier League and has since been released by the club.
While the careers of centre-back Guilian Biancone and Andre Ayew followed a similar narrative on Trentside, there were a few big money deals who haven't repaid that price tag with their performances and are still on the books at the club.
Emmanuel Dennis is the biggest name that springs to mind.
How much did Nottingham Forest sign Emmanuel Dennis for?
Watford were relegated from the Premier League in 2022, but Emmanuel Dennis did his best to keep the Hornets afloat, chalking up an impressive ten goals and six assists in the 2021/22 campaign.
While his efforts to single-handedly rescue the Hertfordshire side would ultimately be in vain, the Nigerian did draw superlatives from all corners of the footballing world, as Michael Owen praised the clubs' hierarchy for unearthing him from Club Brugge following their 1-0 victory over Aston Villa.
He said: "Dennis, what a player, what a signing he’s been in the Premier League this season, great finish again from him.”
The plaudits didn't stop there as his own manager, Claudio Ranieri, previously confessed to the club's official website that they had missed the qualities of the Super Eagle during his suspension.
“[Dennis] is a very talented player. He’s fast, has good skill, always runs straight to the goal – I love these kinds of players.”
On the back of his impressive debut season in the top flight and the heaps of praise directed towards him, several clubs were interested in his signature – including Brentford and Crystal Palace – but it was Nottingham Forest who managed to win the race and land him for a fee believed to be in the region of £20m.
Forest acquired Dennis when his stock was at its highest and therefore paid him £40k-per-week in wages, accumulating to just over £2m across his first year at City Ground.
How many goals did Emmanuel Dennis score for Forest?
When combining his wages with his transfer fee, the Reds shelled out £22m in one season for Dennis, and it's fair to say – they would want to recoup that money in a heartbeat.
With Brennan Johnson, Morgan Gibbs-White and Awoniyi predominantly occupying positions in the forward areas, the 25-year-old was instantly frozen out of Cooper's plans, but he still had a chance to feature for the club regularly if his effort and application was there. Unfortunately, it was severely lacking.
Accustomed to being the main man at Watford alongside Ismaila Sarr and Joao Pedro, Dennis wasn't used to being an outcast and having to work hard for his placing in the starting XI, so when his opportunity eventually did arise, he didn't take his chance and was slammed for his performance after a 3-0 defeat against Manchester United.
In a particularly toothless display against the Red Devils, in which Awoniyi and Dennis failed to register an attempt on goal across the match, the latter's 27-minute cameo was criticized by journalist Lee Clarke who said in an article: "Dennis shouldn't play for Forest again".
Across his debut campaign on Trentside, the former Watford man featured on 25 occasions for Steve Cooper's side, but he only managed to score two goals, costing the club a staggering £12.5m per goal.
Currently on loan at Turkish Süper Lig outfit Istanbul Basaksehir, he is on a path to resurrect his career as he aims to put an end to his disastrous spell at the City Ground. That said, it would be surprised if we ever saw him in Garibaldi Red again.
Mennie and Graham Onions took four Essex wickets for 16 runs between them in a match which promises an absorbing conclusion

ScorecardThe phrase “pulling your tripe out” is disagreeably graphic. However, it suggests the level of effort expected by county supporters of overseas players who arrive on good contracts to play for teams to which they have no natural loyalty. In the second session of this game such endeavour was personified in full measure by Lancashire’s Joe Mennie, whose three wickets in 23 balls briefly dragged his side back to a position of dominance.By the time surprisingly torrential rain ended play seven balls into the evening’s play the game was evenly balanced again with Essex on 221 for 6 in reply to Lancashire’s 301. While that was considerably worse than the visitors envisaged when they were 114 for 1 it was also rather better than they will have feared after Mennie and Graham Onions had reduced them to 130 for 5 in the first ten overs of the afternoon’s play. In other words, we may be set for a gripping two days’ cricket between teams who appear pleasingly well-matched.Such a situation was not the case when Essex resumed after lunch and the regulars in the 1864 suite were just settling into their baklava. Ominously for the Red Rose gourmets, Alastair Cook was unbeaten on 57 and batting in the style that has broken the will of more famous bowlers than Mennie. Among his ten boundaries had been a couple of square cuts, a punch through midwicket and a clip off the hip to backward square leg. Ah yes, we remember them well…And things were worse even than that for Lancashire: the ball was no longer new; Cook and Tom Westley had already put on over a hundred runs on quite an easy-paced pitch; and Cook had been dropped on 18 when Haseeb Hameed failed to cling on to a two-handed catch above his head at first slip off the bowling of Onions. The bowler’s bellow of disappointment encapsulated the moment. “Hold fast that which is good” reads the motto of the metropolitan borough of Trafford. Many Lancastrian lunches would have been far pleasanter had Hameed obeyed the injunction.Joe Mennie picked up three wickets•Getty ImagesBut Mennie responded to the challenge magnificently. Having given Cook’s technique a severe examination before lunch, he caught him between a waltz and a tango with the twelfth ball of the fresh session. Neither forward nor back, Cook edged a catch to Dane Vilas and a door was ajar for the Lancashire seamers. Four overs later it was opened a little further when Mennie yorked Tom Westley for 41, and the disappearance of Essex’s prime batsmen continued when Dan Lawrence placed nothing more useful than his leg in the path of a straight ball from Onions. Next over Ravi Bopara edged a swinging delivery from Mennie to Liam Livingstone at second slip to encourage Lancashire’s hopes of taking a substantial lead. Those hopes were dampened by Ryan ten Doeschate and Adam Wheater’s 81-run stand for the sixth wicket, only two boundaries being scored in their 22 overs’ excellent resistance. But just as Essex’s many supporters were becoming more sanguine, ten Doeschate was brilliantly run out for 43 by Vilas, who gathered the ball and threw down the stumps at the bowler’s end, the keeper’s excellence being matched by that of umpire Jeremy Lloyds, who got into a perfect position to give a decision and then twisted round to see what was happeningFive overs later the rain arrived but Lancashire supporters could go home reassured by the commitment of an overseas player whose signing may not have prompted great excitement in the county of Clive Lloyd, Wasim Akram and VVS Laxman. However, the diehards know better now, and spells such as we saw this afternoon also justified the research undertaken by Lancashire’s coaching team who considered other cricketers before reaching a decision. A few were called but Mennie was chosen.
ScorecardDerbyshire launched their Royal London Cup campaign in impressive style with a 57-run win over Warwickshire at Edgbaston. Two weeks after suffering a heavy Specsavers County Championship defeat in Birmingham, Billy Godleman’s side exacted revenge with a resounding victory of their own in the shorter format.Godleman led the way with a career-best 137 as Derbyshire piled up 357 for 8, their highest List A total against a first-class county.Warwickshire’s reply was then carried by Sam Hain who struck a classy 108, his sixth List A century in just 30 games. But whereas Godleman’s innings was well-supported, Hain’s was not and a Derbyshire attack including debutant Safyaan Sharif bowled with collective discipline to close out a convincing win.Put in, Derbyshire openers Godleman and Slater made good use of excellent batting condition to build a stand of 129 from 116 balls. Madsen then joined his captain to add 99 from 84 balls. On the ground at which he scored a high-class championship century two weeks earlier, Madsen was soon flowing again until he fell lbw to Jeetan Patel. As Godelman and Matt Critchley swung freely, the bowler who imposed most control was the sixth used – Jonathan Trott. He had Critchley stumped then dismissed Aaron Hughes, who reverse-swept to short third man, and Luis Reece, caught at mid-off.Trott applied a temporary brake to the scoring rate but Godelman struck him for 16 in three balls before perishing to Adam Hose’s direct hit from mid-off.Trott’s fourth wicket arrived when Sharif pulled to deep square but a punchy unbeaten 26 from 18 balls by Daryn Smit levered the total above 350 in the final over.Warwickshire’s reply was soon slogging uphill after Duanne Olivier removed both openers in his first nine balls. Ed Pollock, on his List A debut, chipped to mid on and Trott gloved a pull.Hain played sweetly but Critchley turned one inside Ian Bell’s drive to win an lbw decision. Hain and Hose (33, 32 balls, three fours, one six) added 75 in 64 balls but Hose then sent a return catch to Ravi Rampaul and Tim Ambrose chipped Hughes to mid-off.Warwickshire fell further and further behind the clock and when Hain was caught at long-off off Reece, the lower order was required to find 148 from the last 15 overs. Despite Keith Barker’s merry unbeaten 48 (34 balls, six fours, one six), they failed.
Newcastle United star Alexander Isak is said to be high on Mikel Arteta’s list of ideal strikers for Arsenal, with another update on his price tag now surfacing in what could be a boost for the Gunners.
Arsenal identify Alexander Isak as dream transfer target
Multiple reports from the last few months have indicated the Sweden international, who boasts 19 goals from 29 appearances in all competitions already this season – has plenty of admirers within the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal now submit £50m offer for "outstanding" Spurs target, claims report
The Gunners have now made a bid for a defender Tottenham tried to sign in January.

Isak helped to knock Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup semi-finals recently, putting in a stellar performance against them during the second leg at St. James’ Park, and opened the scoring for Eddie Howe’s side in their first leg victory.

The 25-year-old has been a nightmare for Premier League defences and Arsenal’s own backline since he made the move to England from Real Sociedad, with Arteta and co identifying him as a “dream” transfer target.
“I mean, Arsenal’s dream priority is Alexander Isak, and I’m still told that he would like to join a Champions League club and stay in the Premier League in the long run,” said reliable journalist Ben Jacobs to GiveMeSport.
“But of course, in the short-to-medium term, he’s on fire for Newcastle United. He’s invested at Newcastle, and he’s well contracted at Newcastle, so they aren’t worried about necessarily losing Isak imminently, nor do they feel they absolutely have to agree a new contract with him because he remains healthily contracted.
“So it’s a bit of a dream target for Arsenal.”
Isak’s deal still has another three years left to run, meaning the Magpies can afford to charge premium rates for their world-class marksman in the event major clubs do come knocking for his signature.
Reports have suggested that the former La Liga sensation could cost as much £125 million, which means Arsenal would have to break their transfer record to strike a deal for Isak, if Newcastle even entertained the idea of selling him.
Arsenal told new Alexander Isak price tag in boost for Mikel Arteta
However, a new claim has emerged courtesy of Spanish news outlet Sport, which may well come as a boost for Arteta in his pursuit of the superstar number nine.
Indeed, they report that Newcastle have set Isak’s valuation at a fee in excess of £83 million, which is a seismic drop from other mooted figures. Arsenal are yet again mentioned by Sport as one of the contenders for his services, but they face stiff competition from Chelsea and Liverpool, who are also in the running.
While £83 million is still a hefty figure, you can make a very serious case that Isak is one of the best centre-forwards in world football right now, and quality attacking players of his ilk will all command a marquee price tag.

To say that Manchester United have endured a disappointing start to the season would be an incredible understatement. Erik ten Hag's side have lost four of their first eight Premier League games and saw their misery grow worse in the Champions League as Galatasaray came away with all three points at Old Trafford, before being handed a scare by Brentford at the weekend. It therefore comes as little surprise that the Red Devils are already looking towards January and future additions.
Whilst they can't drastically rewrite the current script in the Premier League, those at Old Trafford can ensure that their future brings far more positives at the very least. And a certain transfer target who United have sent scouts to watch could play a part in that.
What's the latest Man Utd transfer news?
Manchester United more than played their part in the summer transfer window, welcoming the likes of Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana – making their poor start to the season all the more surprising. It's clear that more reinforcements are needed off the back of that start, however, even if that means players for the long-term future come through the door.
With that said, a transfer update on Luis Guilherme has emerged. According to Fabrizio Romano, United sent scouts to watch the 17-year-old Palmeiras player. The transfer expert said, via his Daily Briefing: "Keep an eye also on Manchester United in South America because in recent weeks Manchester United, as I told you, sent their scouts, as well as Chelsea, to follow Lorran from Flamengo, this talented Brazilian boy.
"Man Utd scouts were in attendance to follow this player. But from what I’m hearing, there is also one more player being monitored by Manchester United. This is Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras, one more Brazilian talent.
"Someone from Manchester United’s scouting department is travelling around Brazil to keep an eye on these players. Let’s see what is going to happen because, for example, on Luis Guilherme, there are more than five important European clubs – from Germany, from England, from different countries."
It will be interesting to see whether United push on and sign the teenager, as well as fellow Brazilian Loran, as they build for the future, perhaps in the hope of avoiding the issues that they currently face under Ten Hag.
Who is Luis Guilherme?
At just 17 years old, Guilherme is already playing an important part for Palmeiras, making 23 appearances in all competitions for the Brazilian side. Almost certainly one for the future, the attacking midfielder, having done enough to earn the attention of United, will now hope to push and develop even further.
Of course, if Guilherme did complete a move to Manchester United, then he would have a great role model to look up to at Old Trafford in the form of Casemiro. The experienced Brazil international could be the perfect player to help the midfielder's progression.
As things stand, however, Guilherme remains a Palmeiras player, and United remain in crisis mode on the pitch, albeit having just escaped with victory in their recent clash against Brentford. When the January transfer window does open, the Red Devils will likely be one of the teams to keep an eye on, that's for sure.

Manchester United, especially under the decorated managerial stay of Sir Alex Ferguson, were known to be frugal in the transfer market and operating within their own means.
Peter Schmeichel joined the Red Devils for a mere £625k back in 1991, whilst in the modern day Cristiano Ronaldo – just an 18-year-old kid in 2003 – joined the Theatre of Dreams for £12.24m.
Now, it's increasingly more difficult to get the top talents in on a cheap deal – inflated transfer fees often see clubs pay way over the odds in an attempt to improve their side.
For Manchester United at the time, signing Memphis Depay off the back of an outstanding season in his native Netherlands seemed a no-brainer.
Scoring 22 goals in the Eredivisie for previous employers PSV before relocating and still only 21 years of age, £31m for his services didn't feel like a bad deal.
But, it's a transfer that saw Depay fail to perform on the big stage for the Red Devils and left Man United ultimately regretting the deal altogether.
When did Manchester United sign Memphis Depay?
In the summer of 2015, Depay agreed terms to join Man United – Dutch manager at the time Louis Van Gaal eager to get the attacker in at Old Trafford.
Scoring 50 times for PSV over 124 games, Depay was a wanted man before his ill-fated transfer to Man United. The 5 foot 10 forward was subject to interest from the likes of Tottenham before the Red Devils got the deal over the line.
Following the same career footsteps as previous Red Devils greats Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Jaap Stam before him in swapping the Eredivisie for England, Depay's time at Old Trafford wouldn't be anywhere near as successful.
How many goals did Memphis Depay score for Man Utd?
He would manage a lacklustre two Premier League goals in total for the Red Devils before being shipped out to Lyon in France, only afforded 20 minutes of game time for Man United at the start of the 2016/17 campaign as a frozen-out figure.
The 88-time Netherlands international would add a further five goals to his Man United resume in Cup competitions – scoring against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League – but it's fair to say Depay's time in a Red Devils strip was an underwhelming and disappointing one.
A year and a half after moving out to Manchester, Depay was on the move again – joining Ligue 1 giants Lyon, his time with Man United rocky to say the least but an opportunity to bounce back in France.
Where is Memphis Depay now?
Depay did just that after exiting the Theatre of Dreams, going on to have a very successful time in the French top division and elsewhere.
He would go on to make 178 appearances in total for the Ligue 1 outfit, alternating between playing down the channels and as a striker – scoring an impressive 76 goals, Depay's ruthlessness returning after a barren time in England.
He would also go on to play for Barcelona, netting 14 times in La Liga for Barca before Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid swooped in for the Dutchman where his success story in Spain has continued.
In total, the ex-Man United man has registered 96 goals and 57 assists ever since he waved his short time at Old Trafford goodbye.
As a result, he has outperformed players such as Jadon Sancho and Antony who continue to struggle in England when unburdened from the pressures of the Premier League.
Manchester United's Jadon Sancho
Sancho is now exiled from the squad having scored just 12 times in 82 outings for the Premier League giants. Last term he only found the net on seven occasions in 41 outings, compared to Depay's five, albeit in only 13 games.
The Dutchman significantly outperformed United's mega-money signing the season before, bagging 13 goals in the 2021/22 term. Sancho, comparatively, could only manage five strikes.
To suggest it was a mistake to let him go would be farfetched, but clearly, it highlights how poor their English wide man has been since joining from Dortmund.
Ronaldo has heaped praise on Jude Bellingham after the English midfielder's emphatic start to his Real Madrid career.

Englishman leads La Liga scoring charts with 16 goals
Zidane "surprised" by Bellingham's start
WHAT HAPPENED?
Ronaldo gave a wide-ranging interview to discussing Los Blancos' season, highlighting their improvement as a side and touching on Kylian Mbappe's potential arrival. But he admitted Bellingham has been the most apparent positive from the campaign so far.

WHAT RONALDO SAID ABOUT BELLINGHAM
The former Brazil and Real Madrid man heaped praise on Bellingham: "I love the way Jude Bellingham plays. The way he is playing at Madrid, scoring goals in almost every match, I love to watch him play. He goes forward all the time. I was watching a few matches in the Bernabeu stadium and I was looking for Bellingham. He surprised me a lot with his quality. The speed at which he runs into the area, you can see he wants to score goals all the time. He reminds me a little bit of Zinedine Zidane with his quality."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Madrid spent big on Bellingham last summer, bringing the Englishman to the Santiago Bernabeu for an initial €103m (£88m/$110m.) Thus far, he has been well worth the investment, leading the line as part of Carlo Ancelotti's unique 4-4-2 diamond setup.

WHAT NEXT FOR BELLINGHAM?
Bellingham is in the midst of a two-game suspension in the Spanish top flight. He was shown a red card at the end of Los Blancos' La Liga clash with Valencia after confronting the referee over a controversial decision that denied his side of a last-second winner. He will return to the fold for his club on March 31 – but is expected to appear for England before then.
