West Indies crush England by 10 wickets to seal series win

West Indies 306 (Bravo 50, Brathwaite 49, Broad 3-53) and 17 for 0 (Campbell 11*, Brathwaite 5*) beat England 187 and 132 (Buttler 24, Holder 4-43, Roach 4-52) by 10 wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsFor the second match in a row, England were outplayed in every area as West Indies won the Antigua Test by 10 wickets to claim the series 2-0. While England were left holding out for a hero to stand up with the bat, West Indies have channeled David Bowie, not Bonnie Tyler, to produce multiple heroes throughout the series so far, with a dead rubber in St Lucia to come.Kemar Roach, whose five-wicket haul was instrumental in bowling England out for a first-innings 77 to set up victory in Barbados, and Jason Holder, the West Indies captain who scored an unbeaten double-century to put that win beyond doubt, took four wickets each on day three in Antigua to restrict the tourists to just 132 in their second innings and set their themselves a meagre target of just 14 runs.Fellow fast bowler Alzarri Joseph was also nothing short of heroic, claiming two wickets while mourning the death of his mother overnight. Joseph also took a diving catch off Holder to dismiss England’s last man out, James Anderson, for a duck.West Indies openers Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell reeled in the target in just 13 balls, Campbell bringing up the winning runs with a thumping six off Anderson to sum up the magnitude of his team’s triumph.Brathwaite had helped lay the foundations for West Indies in the first innings, his disciplined 49 alongside Darren Bravo’s tenacious half-century on a pitch that was particularly challenging for the batsmen building a 119-run lead.Holder’s captaincy was also a highlight. He made confident use of the DRS with critical effect, ultimately leading to the dismissals of Joe Root and Ben Foakes in the second innings.England openers Joe Denly and Rory Burns safely negotiated tricky spells either side of lunch but, when Holder brought himself into the attack, his first ball had Burns out to a miscued cut shot that flew straight to Campbell in the slips. Holder struck again to remove Jonny Bairstow. Batting at No. 3 despite standing in for injured wicketkeeper Foakes for the entire 121 overs of West Indies’ first innings, Bairstow drove hard at and missed a ball that clipped the top of off stump.Root was out in dramatic style. Joseph did not appeal despite the wicketkeeper and entire slips cordon, which included Holder, going up in unison for caught behind, with umpire Chris Gaffaney ruling it not out. Holder, convinced he had heard something, called for the DRS which appeared to show ball had brushed glove and the decision was overturned.Joseph, understandably, showed no emotion when he bowled debutant Denly with a neat delivery that angled in to take the top of off stump. Just three balls later, Joseph watched as Campbell grassed a thick edge off Ben Stokes. That meant Stokes and Jos Buttler returned from tea shouldering the responsibility of posting a defensible target, but when Roach bowled Stokes for just 11, the rot set in.Bravo had not played a Test in more than two years before Barbados, where he managed scores of just 2 and 1. But the value of his 50 in Antigua proved immeasurable. It was the slowest half-century by a West Indies batsman in terms of time but in those 342 minutes, Bravo displayed patience and intelligence. He withstood the difficult batting conditions and some searching England bowling, particularly from Broad on the second day, to bring up his fifty off 215 deliveries late in the morning session on day three. On his next ball, however, Bravo succumbed to a stumping by Bairstow off the bowling of Moeen Ali.While Bravo was the only West Indies batsman to reach 50, his first innings combined with 40s from Brathwaite, Campbell and Shai Hope proved to England’s batsmen the difficult pitch could be contended with. The problem for England was – half-centuries to Moeen and Bairstow in the first innings aside – no one could step up when it really mattered.England’s poor Test series record in the Caribbean – with just one triumph (in 2004) since 1968 – continues as a result.

Hojbjerg out & "nuisance" starts in fresh role in Spurs predicted lineup vs NUFC

Tottenham Hotspur return to action in the Premier League tomorrow afternoon with the knowledge that failure to defeat Newcastle United in London would result in a six-match winless run – having scored first in each fixture.

Ange Postecoglou had triumphed in rekindling the cohesion at the club after his summer appointment, but despite blitzing into the ascendancy with eight victories from the opening ten fixtures of the campaign, injuries and suspensions have been at the epicentre of the recent, ongoing demise.

But form is only temporary and Spurs have displayed their brilliance this season with some exemplary early showings, and their Australian manager will feel that a positive result against the Magpies could turn the tide on their faltering campaign.

4/10 Spurs star was as bad as Destiny Udogie during West Ham defeat

Tottenham have now failed to win any of their past five Premier League matches, despite scoring first each time.

ByAngus Sinclair Dec 8, 2023

Interestingly, Postecoglou may well opt to keep the faith in the lion's share of the players that lost 2-1 to West Ham United on Thursday, with Football FanCast predicting that he will make just one alteration to the starting line-up.

1 GK – Guglielmo Vicario

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Guglielmo Vicario signed for Tottenham from Italian side Empoli for an initial £17m in the summer and has been a veritable wall between the sticks.

While Spurs have endured some testing times over the past weeks, the 27-year-old has remained a confident and commanding figure, and he boasts the quality to ensure that Spurs defeat Newcastle tomorrow afternoon.

2 RB – Pedro Porro

pedro-porro-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-kieran-trippier-newcastle-united

Incredible. The best way to sum up Pedro Porro's performances over the opening months of the campaign, having provided four assists from 14 matches in the Premier League and earned praise for his "titanic" efforts by The Athleti's Charlie Eccleshare.

As per Sofascore, the Spaniard has completed 82% of his passes and averages 1.6 key passes, 3.1 tackles, 5.3 ball recoveries and 2.1 clearances per game – very much the all-encompassing force.

In fact, Porro's 43 tackles made in the English top-flight this season is bettered only by Fulham's Joao Palhinha (64) and Sheffield United's Vinicius Souza (46) – with the latter having played a match more.

3 CB – Cristian Romero

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero.

Cristian Romero returned to action in midweek after serving a three-match suspension, and while he galvanised his side into action after heading home to open the scoring against the Hammers, Spurs still withered as the game dragged on.

Nonetheless, he's a titan of a centre-back and his return comes at the perfect time; against Newcastle, his bold and tough-tacking presence will facilitate security for his teammates.

4 CB – Ben Davies

Spurs defender Ben Davies.

With £43m summer signing Micky van de Ven still out injured, Welshman, Ben Davies has performed well in central defence over the past several league matches.

He's not the perfect option, but alongside Romero a dynamic and unlikely partnership could take shape over the winter period.

5 LB – Destiny Udogie

Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie.

Destiny Udogie's "disaster" – as was said by Eccleshare – of a backpass against West Ham allowed James Ward-Prowse to capitalise in the second half and give the away side an unlikely lead, which they held onto.

However, the young Italian has been immense this season and looks set for a prominent and successful Premier League career, and he will be eager to right his wrongs with a standout showing against the Toon.

6 CM – Yves Bissouma

Yves Bissouma.

Yves Bissouma enjoyed a resounding start to the campaign but took his foot off the gas across recent matches, though he did return to his best against West Ham despite defeat.

Taking a staggering 130 touches in that match, the Malian midfielder completed 94% of his passes and will be the combative and industrious figure in the centre to assert control in the crucial midfield battle.

7 CM – Giovani Lo Celso

dejan-kulusevski-giovani-lo-celso-tottenham-opinion

Giovani Lo Celso has stepped up big time in the absence of James Maddison, who is sidelined until after the new year and has been unavailable for the past four fixtures.

A brilliant passer of the ball, Lo Celso ranks among the top 1% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, passes attempted and progressive passes, and the top 6% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

Such qualities will be important against Newcastle, who will pounce on any opening and will need to be nullified and worn out.

8 RW – Richarlison

yago-santiago-maddison-richarlison-tottenham-opinion

The one predicted change to the starting line-up, Richarlison may well find a place on the right wing to accommodate a tactical tweak in seeing Dejan Kulusevski move back to the central attacking midfield role and seeing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg return to the bench.

While he has largely flattered to deceive since signing for Tottenham from Everton for £60m in 2022, Richarlison's creativity has been a valuable asset this term and he has racked up three assists from just seven starts in the Premier League, described as a "nuisance" for defenders by Postecoglou.

9 AM – Dejan Kulusevski

samuel-iling-junior-dejan-kulusevski-tottenham-opinion

As stated, Richarlison might be fielded on the right and, therefore, Spurs supporters could find Kulusevski serving as the "engine" – as was said by Sky Sports' Jamie Weir – in the middle, where he was so effective against Manchester City last weekend.

Posting a goal and an assist against the Treble winners in the thrilling 3-3 draw, the Swede also completed a key pass and took 48 touches, and against Newcastle, where the hosts will strive to dominate possession and the flow of the contest, he could be vital in pulling the strings.

10 LW – Brennan Johnson

bentancur-johnson-tottenham-opinion

Brennan Johnson has started to solidify a starring role in Postecoglou's Spurs side after fluctuating from a starting role over the opening months of the campaign, signing from Nottingham Forest for £47.5m in the summer.

Hailed as a player who can "cause so many problems" for the opposition by journalist Josh Bunting, Johnson's electric pace should mean he starts on the left, where he can compound Magpies star Kieran Trippier's woes after the 33-year-old's horror show against Everton in midweek, making two mistakes in a 3-0 defeat.

Matthew Wade, D'Arcy Short lead Hobart Hurricanes' 10-wicket rout of Adelaide Strikers

They put on an unbroken 158 for the opening stand to consolidate the Hurricanes’ position at the top of the table

The Report by Daniel Brettig21-Jan-2019Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short dismantled Adelaide Strikers to record only the second ever 10-wicket victory in the eight-year history of the Big Bash League, at the same time extending their lead at the top of the competition table.Perth Scorchers had done the trick over Melbourne Renegades via the innings of Shaun Marsh and Michael Klinger in December 2015, getting to a target of 171 with eight balls remaining. But Wade and Short continued to lead the way for the Hurricanes, the captain working as the initial aggressor before Short began to catch-up, reeling in the Strikers with a yawning 19 balls to spare. They had been given a more than manageable task by the excellence of the Hurricanes’ attack, Jofra Archer and James Faulkner keeping the Strikers very quiet, even if Colin Ingram was able to find the range of Riley Meredith late in the hosts’ innings.Archer hits the mark
A strength of the Hurricanes this tournament has been the sheer depth of their attack, with Archer, Faulkner, Meredith and Johan Botha all playing key roles at varying times – the first three all having topped 10 wickets for the BBL so far. So when the Strikers got a hold of Meredith at Adelaide Oval after his early dismissal of Jake Weatherald, others were ready to take up the strain, namely Archer.Matthew Wade lifts one over the leg side•Getty Images

Across four overs, all bowled non consecutively, Archer conceded only one boundary while at the same time picking up the more than useful wickets of Matt Short and Rashid Khan. More so than the wickets, it was Archer’s sheer discipline that maintained pressure and opened up avenues for others, including Faulkner, who picked up a pair of victims of his own during a spell in which he conceded only one more run than Archer.Ingram holds it together
At 3 for 50 in the 10th over after the loss of Alex Carey, the Strikers were staring at a total well short of 150 on what appeared an excellent Adelaide pitch. In the absence of Travis Head, Colin Ingram has proven himself to be a creditable captain with the bat and in the field, leading his team’s run-makers in the process. This night he provided another indicator the Strikers had made a wise choice, as he produced a salvaging innings of quality.Starting with a clean blow over midwicket off the bowling of Botha, Ingram found a useful ally in Jon Wells, building up to the 19th over from Merddith in which he piled up 22 runs to ensure the Strikers made it past the 150 mark. If he was unable to be quite as damaging to Clive Rose in the final over of the innings, Ingram had still given what looked to be a potentially defensible total. Looked to be.Wade goes off
Hobart’s ascendancy has often been started by the way that Wade and Short have been able to dictate terms, and it wasn’t long before the captain had Strikers fans starting to think about making an early exit from Adelaide Oval. The usually excellent Rashid Khan dropped short to be pulled for four in the second over, and the Hurricanes scarcely looked back from there.Wade took a particular liking to his erstwhile Australia team-mate Billy Stanlake, hammering the tall Queenslander for 26 from 12 balls faced, while Ben Laughlin and Michael Neser also conceded strike rates of more than 200 runs to Wade. For a time it appeared as though Wade might get as far as three figures, before a previously conservative Short took over.Short finishes off
A criticism of Short during his international career so far has been a tendency to soak up too many balls before getting out. But with a confident and aggressive partner in Wade, he has been able to pace himself this BBL, with often devastating effect. As the Hurricanes closed in on the win, Short crashed 28 runs from his final nine balls, including 17 off Rashid’s last over. With the finals beckoning, the Hurricanes could scarcely be rolling along any better.

The Real Madrid forward netted the semi-final tie's opening goal in the 24th minute of the first leg at the Allianz Arena in Munich. It was a remarkable, measured through ball from Toni Kroos against his former club and a composed first-time finish from Vini on his right foot beyond the on-rushing Manuel Neuer.

Vinicius Junior had previously scored in the Champions League semi-finals against Manchester City in both 2021-22 and 2022-23, making this the third successive season in which he has found the net in the competition's last four. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15), Kevin De Bruyne (2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23) and Jari Litmanen (1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97) have previously achieved that feat in the competition.

With La Liga all but sewn up, Vinicius Junior is targeting his second career Champions League title this season. If he helps Real Madrid achieve that, the Brazilian could even be a genuine contender for the 2024 Ballon d'Or, although he would face stiff competition from current team-mate Jude Bellingham and expected future team-mate Kylian Mbappe.

Everton could sign Godfrey upgrade in "stonewall" £3m-rated gem

After recent events, Everton know that the club’s finances and transfers will be under tight scrutiny from the powers that be. As a result, the Toffees may need to begin focusing recruitment on players that can be signed for cheap and sold for immense profit.

Jarrad Branthwaite is a great example of Everton’s recruitment working, having joined from Carlisle United for £1m three years ago and now being worth close to £35m.

3 players Everton could sign if Branthwaite leaves including £22m wonderkid

Everton could lose their breakthrough centre-back star to a new club soon, with targets being drafted up in case he does depart.

ByKelan Sarson Nov 18, 2023

The Merseyside outfit are reportedly eyeing up another possible steal ahead of January, who could be worth a lot more money in the future.

Everton transfer news – Archie Brown

According to The Daily Mail, Everton are one of several clubs keeping tabs on Archie Brown at KAA Gent as the fullback has had a tremendous season in Belgium. The outlet is also reporting that Everton face competition from fellow Premier League side Burnley and Championship outfit Leeds United for the 21-year-old’s signature.

Brown came up through Derby County’s youth ranks and scored a hattrick in the U18 Premier League final against Arsenal back in 2020 to lift the club’s first-ever trophy in that age group, with his father even describing him as “stonewall” because of his incredibly serious facial expressions.

Despite being offered a new contract in 2021, the youngster decided to take a risk by signing for Lausanne-Sport, owned by INEOS. Having stayed with the Swiss side for two years, Belgian Pro League club Gent came calling in the recent summer window for £3.4m.

Brown has been making waves with De Buffalo’s. However, as the defender has played for two clubs this season, he potentially wouldn’t feature for Everton until the following campaign due to FIFA regulations.

Archie Brown’s stats this season

This season, Brown has been a regular member of Gent’s first-team and has made 18 appearances in all competitions, totalling 1,388 minutes as Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s men currently sit in third.

Additionally, the young wide player has featured in a whole host of different positions, from being a left-winger to a left-back to even playing as a centre-back with the Belgian club. However, throughout his infant career, Brown’s most utilised position has been as a left-back.

It was reported this past week that manager Sean Dyche is willing to let Ben Godfrey leave this winter, with Tottenham Hotspur keen to sign the ex-Norwich City star. Godfrey has played just two league games this season with the Toffees.

Godfrey is Vitaliy Mykolenko’s only backup option on the left side of the defence. Ashley Young can fill in at left-back but will be 39 in the summer and can’t be considered as much of a long-term option. This is where the signing of Brown makes sense.

In fact, Brown has even been outperforming Mykolenko and Godfrey in several key attacking and defensive metrics this term – having only been bettered with regard to successful take-ons, tackles and blocks made per 90.

Football Transfers has placed Brown’s current market value at between £1.7m and 3m, but given he still has just less than four years remaining on his deal with Gent, it’s likely that Everton will be forced to fork out a lot more.

Nevertheless, this could be an incredibly astute acquisition by the Toffees by signing a player who could have a higher ceiling than Mykolenko due to his statistical return this term.

'Did anyone expect?' – Jurgen Klopp launches defence of Liverpool players after Premier League title bid collapses due to disastrous Everton defeat

Jurgen Klopp launched a fierce defence of his Liverpool players despite their Premier League title bid collapse due to the disastrous Everton defeat.

Liverpool succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to EvertonSlipped to third in the Premier League standingsKlopp not ready to blame his players for the sudden collapseWHAT HAPPENED?

The Reds' devastating loss to Everton, coupled with comfortable victories for Arsenal and Manchester City against Chelsea and Brighton, respectively, has resulted in Liverpool slipping to third place in the Premier League table. To reignite their title hopes, Liverpool now rely on both Arsenal and City dropping points in their remaining league fixtures.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite the recent disappointments, Klopp is not ready to blame his players. The German instead is focused on finishing his tenure on a high by winning the remaining matches so that they remain in contention, at least mathematically, for the championship as long as possible.

WHAT KLOPP SAID

Speaking to reporters, Klopp said: "Did anyone expect us to become champions at the start of the season? No, but it developed in this direction. We go now to Aston Villa, they still have a few points less than us, so we need points still to be definitely [qualified for Champions League places], also Tottenham. Nobody here is happy at all.

"Just to explain how different it is. We cannot go back to the point where we say 'Yeah, well [qualifying for the Champions League] is good enough'. It is very good, but because we were so close, we are very, very disappointed at this moment in time. We cannot change that."

KLOPP NOT READY TO WAVE THE 'WHITE FLAG'

Although the German manager believes that the Premier League title race is now a two-horse affair between Arsenal and Manchester City, Klopp has warned his rivals that his players will give their all until the final matchday.

"I'm not in the mood to give up, to wave the white flag. We just have to look after ourselves and make sure we play better," he said. "Nobody gave up here, we just need to be realistic."

West Brom’s 7/10 star stole the show alongside Diangana against Ipswich Town

West Brom capitalised on Sunderland slipping up away at Plymouth Argyle to climb up the league table to fifth, goals early either side of the first half and second half meant Carlos Corberan's men would end Ipswich Town's 12-match unbeaten run in the Championship with a statement 2-0 win.

It was a thoroughly deserved win for a confident Baggies team, limiting Kieran McKenna's usually free-flowing side to half chances here and there throughout the 90 minutes – the Tractor Boys actually failing to hit the target with any of their six shots on the day, a convincing victory on home soil for West Brom.

Standout performers from the statement victory – away from the goalscorers – included Brandon Thomas-Asante who picked up an assist for Grady Diangana's game-clinching goal alongside centre-back Kyle Bartley who won all of his ground duels as per Sofascore to consolidate a clean-sheet.

Diangana and Darnell Furlong were head and shoulders above the rest in this contest however, especially West Brom's number two who got the Baggies up and running in the game with an early header finding the back of Ipswich goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky's net.

Darnell Furlong's game vs Ipswich Town in numbers

Starting 15 games this season for the Baggies, Furlong's stronghold on the starting right-back spot is set even more in stone after his sterling individual performance in this 2-0 win.

The 3 dream signings that West Brom should make in January

Corberan will be writing up a list of targets now, with these three players top priorities for the Baggies.

By
Kelan Sarson

Nov 14, 2023

Praised by Birmingham Live journalist Joseph Chapman for his 'workmanlike' efforts versus the Tractor Boys – resulting in Furlong winning a 7/10 score in his player ratings – the 28-year-old was crucial throughout the game as an industrious presence allowing his side to comfortably stroll to the three points come full-time.

Furlong would win six of his ten duels under the lights at the Hawthorns, thwarting the likes of Nathan Broadhead and Conor Chaplin with ease who had 12 goals combined in league action before this one.

The reliable Baggies defender did lose possession 17 times, as a marker of his creativity, but also completed five combined interceptions and tackles to shut out the frustrated Ipswich attackers, going about his defensive duties valiantly after opening the scoring in the fourth minute with a rare goal from the back.

Furlong's expertly timed header was only his seventh-ever goal for the Baggies from 169 appearances, the former QPR man instinctively connecting with Matt Phillips' corner kick to make it 1-0.

West Brom's number two has been a competent performer for Corberan's playoff dark horses all season long away from this performance in isolation however, finally now gaining plaudits for his continued hard work at right-back.

Darnell Furlong's season in numbers

Furlong has helped West Brom pick up six clean sheets when he's been on the field this season, the Baggies only shipping 17 goals this season to have the division's joint second-meanest defence alongside Leeds United.

The 28-year-old's tenacity and eagerness to close down defenders that were present versus Ipswich has been typical in his game all campaign, Furlong averaging 3.2 ball recoveries per 90 minutes this season in a bid to then launch a counter-attack to expose startled opposing defenders quickly after recovering possession.

It's no surprise that Furlong is one of the first names on Corberan's team sheet currently, West Brom's number two hopeful that he can keep up his current impressive performances with promotion the main aim for the Baggies as a collective come the end of the second tier season.
