Focus on fringe inclusions shows how far England's World Cup planning has come

It hasn’t been an entirely smooth route to England’s final 15-man squad, but it’s a vast improvement on past campaigns

George Dobell at Lord's21-May-2019There are some things – flights, cups of tea, and your heartbeat, for example – you want should be predictable. And perhaps it is the same with squad announcements. Squad announcements for global tournaments, anyway.Selectors have had four years to plan. They have had four years to ensure that every player knows their role and every player knows what to expect from their team-mates. At this stage, squads should be settled and predictable.England have achieved that pretty well. Yes, David Willey is unfortunate. Yes, Joe Denly will be disappointed. But, for the first time in many, many years, England are going into a World Cup with a relatively settled, well-balanced side that has a realistic chance of victory. The position that provoked most debate and discussion on Tuesday was that of reserve spin bowler. It’s a detail, really. An important one, but nothing compared to what we have seen before.Perhaps, to appreciate how smooth this process has been, it is worth comparing it to the chaos with which we have become accustomed. In 2015, for example, England sacked their captain, Alastair Cook, a few weeks before the tournament. Then, on its eve, they changed the new-ball attack (demoting Chris Woakes to first-change) and fiddled with the batting order (swapping Gary Ballance and James Taylor at No. 3 and No. 6). In the tournaments before that, it became customary for them to change their wicketkeeper (2007 and 2011) or opening partnership (1999) at the last minute. Indeed, in 1999, they dropped their captain (Adam Hollioake) and their opening batsman (Nick Knight) shortly before the tournament and prepared for a home event with a training camp in… Lahore. You could hardly make that up.And, even if England did go into a tournament with their best side, there was usually some crisis (the Zimbabwe affair of 2003, for example) or late change of approach that threatened to derail their progress. They rarely had a chance to define plans or develop well-rehearsed strategies. In a format in which role-definition and planning is so important, England have invariably gone into World Cups hoping it would all come together on the night. It rarely has done.Mark Wood and Jofra Archer both returned to the starting line-up•Getty ImagesIt doesn’t feel like that this time. While the introduction of Jofra Archer has come at a late stage, anyone taken by surprise simply hasn’t been paying attention. While England would, in an ideal world, like him to have played more than three ODIs – and, indeed, more than 17 List A matches – the experience he has of playing in high-profile, high-pressure T20 leagues suggests he has the talent and temperament to succeed. His range of skills – not least his well-controlled pace – are a huge asset to a team that, Mark Wood apart, can look a little pedestrian. They were, remember, thrashed for sixes by Chris Gayle every 8.10 balls he faced in the recent series in the Caribbean. Archer’s batting and fielding are also more than useful. He is British, he is eligible, and he is very good. His is not, at this stage, a remotely controversial selection.Nor is Liam Dawson. He is, quite simply, a more experienced, more reliable spin bowler than Denly. And while Denly is almost certainly a better batsman, Dawson’s average of 45.33 in the Royal London Cup is proof that he’s no mug either. Besides, the role essentially demands that the occupant can come into the side at short notice and fill the hole left by injury to either Moeen Ali or Adil Rashid. Dawson is a better fit for that specific job. Denly may console himself with the knowledge that he now has the opportunity to return to county cricket and score heavily in the Championship with a bid to securing a place in the Ashes. He is the man in possession of the No. 3 spot in the Test side, after all.Willey could yet win a recall mid-tournament. While he is not officially on any reserve list, it stands to reason that he – and perhaps Chris Jordan – would be next in line should one of England’s seamers suffer an injury. His left-arm variations, the swing he can generate with the new ball and the control he demonstrates at the death, are all attractive qualities. But it was his ill-fortune to be competing for the new ball, in particular, with Archer, Wood and Woakes. Leaving him out was a tough decision, but it was also probably right.Again, in an ideal world, England might have liked Dawson to have been with them throughout the Pakistan series. Or at least for the final couple of games, when it became apparent the selectors were not in total agreement over the suitability of Denly for the role. But at least Dawson was playing cricket rather than running drinks on for his colleagues, and it is not as if he is a stranger to either the environment or the players. There have been other bumps on the road. The loss of Alex Hales – who may be remembered as the Pete Best of cricket if England go on to win the trophy (Denly may be remembered as the Jimmie Nicol) – might have destabilised some squads. Equally, the introduction of Archer might have unsettled the bowlers and provoked reasonable concerns about talent pathways in both England and the Caribbean. But, whatever feathers within the squad were ruffled by Archer’s arrival have long since been patted back down – not least by evidence of his obvious ability and his amiable, equable nature – while Hales has simply been left behind. This team, like kids cramming ahead of important exams, no longer had time for the class joker. Damning though it sounds, his absence has hardly been mentioned in recent times. So England go into this tournament confident, settled and united. Their squad has bite with the ball, punch with the bat and balance through the depth provided by the allrounders. This may well be the best World Cup squad they have ever assembled; it certainly represents their best chance to win in many years.

Journalist drops exciting Rangers transfer update after Jefte and Cortes

Rangers are closing in on the signings of Jefte and Oscar Cortes, and an update from journalist Derek Clark has now revealed what's next after the pair arrive in Glasgow.

Rangers transfer news

Things appear to be going well for Philippe Clement and his side at the moment, with Saturday's 1-0 win away to St Mirren ensuring they keep the pressure on Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race. They are only five points behind their rivals with a game in hand, suggesting that things could go to the wire this season.

New signings in the coming days could only benefit Rangers in their title surge, and a host of different players have been linked with moves to Ibrox before the month reaches its conclusion.

One individual who is reportedly a big target is Fluminense left-back Jefte, with an agreement believed to be in place to seal the signing soon. The Brazilian is considered an upgrade on Borna Barisic, and left-backs could be needed if he and/or Ridvan Yilmaz move on to pastures new this month.

Borna Barisic

Meanwhile, Lens attacker Cortes looks set to arrive on loan for the remainder of the season, with an option to make his move a permanent one in his contract. A report from The Daily Record claims that Clement "is on the brink of landing his third January signing", adding that he is "already said to be en route to Glasgow so he can formalise the relationship".

Another player who has been backed to join Rangers numerous times in recent months is Hearts attacker Lawrence Shankland, who has been one of the Scottish Premiership's best players this season, topping the scoring charts with 14 goals to date in the competition.

Rangers to make another signing

Taking to X, Clark claimed that Rangers expect to make another signing before deadline day ends on Thursday night, after bringing in Jefte and Cortes.

"Told Rangers hopeful of bringing in one more after Jefte and Cortes. Expect departures although hearing Cifuentes not too keen on move to Turkey."

It is encouraging to see Rangers looking to make so many signings at this stage of the transfer window, suggesting Clement is not content to wait around and build for the future, instead believing the title charge is well and truly on this time around.

It looks as though outgoings are also hugely likely, especially Jose Cifuentes, even though the above report suggests that a move to Turkey may not be at the top of his agenda. Whether either or both of Barsic and Yilmaz move on as well remains to be seen, but if that does happen, a second left-back may even need to be looked at on top of Jefte.

Fabrizio Romano says Rangers have “deal in place” to complete another signing

An agreement has been reached to sign the player in question.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 28, 2024

It does feel as though things could move quickly when it comes to both incoming and outgoing business this month, especially given how late it is in the window, and it is a period that will end up looking key come the end of the season.

'I'm so, so happy' – Kieran McKenna explains why he snubbed Man Utd and Chelsea to extend stay at Ipswich after Premier League promotion

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna has explained why he decided to sign a new contract with the club despite interest from other Premier League teams.

The 38-year-old signed a long-term extension that keeps him at the club to 2028, meaning he will stay on as the club kick off their first Premier League campaign in 22 years, having earned promotion from the Championship this season.

McKenna's work at the Tractor Boys attracted interest from Manchester United, who could sack manager Erik ten Hag this summer despite winning the FA Cup, and Chelsea, who recently parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino.

WHAT MCKENNA SAID

McKenna admits he knew of the growing interest in his services, but was proud to commit to a new deal at Portman Road instead, saying: "I'm aware of it. It's part and parcel of success, there's been interest from other clubs and it's a short career as a manager. It's right to consider things but I'm so, so happy with the decision I've made. I am extremely proud to have signed a new contract with the club. We have enjoyed incredible success together over the last two seasons and I'm excited to have the opportunity and responsibility of leading this fantastic club into its first season in the Premier League in 22 years."

(C)GettyImagesWHAT NEXT FOR IPSWICH?

After securing their place in the Premier League with a runners-up finish in the Championship, McKenna and Ipswich will soon begin preparing for their long-awaited return to the top-flight. However, the coach and his players will first take a break over the summer after such an intense campaign.

5/10 Man Utd star let the side down v Newport County

Manchester United will be playing in the fifth round of the FA Cup after picking up a 4-2 victory over League Two opponent Newport County at Rodney Parade.

Erik ten Hag will take a few positives from the performances of individuals, but on the whole, the boss will be frustrated and disappointed in his team's lack of togetherness.

The Red Devils fielded a very strong side, with Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Casemiro, and Antony all getting some much-needed minutes on the field, but the probable plan to rotate in the second half wasn't executed.

Next up for United is Wolves on Thursday evening, where they will look to kickstart their Premier League campaign.

How Newport County vs Man United played out

As expected, the visitors came flying out the blocks and played with intent from the off, which was rewarded in the seventh minute.

Bruno Fernandes and Antony combined brilliantly before the United captain drilled the ball into the bottom left corner. Six minutes later, Kobbie Mainoo guided the ball home with a clever finish, and at that point, it looked like the Red Devils could end up scoring double figures.

However, the crowd was lifted just after the half-hour mark when Bryn Morris unleashed a strike from range, which deflected off the Argentinan centre-back and flew into the net. It was a frustrating way to concede for United, especially considering they had the opportunity to go completely clear.

Two minutes after the break, Will Evans latched onto a cross to bring the score to 2-2, following a quick counterattack and poor defending from the Premier League side.

Luckily, Antony was on hand to score his first goal of the season, finishing into an open net after Shaw hit the post. Rasmus Hojlund scored for the third game in a row, minutes before the final whistle.

Casemiro's stats vs Newport County

Casemiro returned to the starting XI for the first time since November on Sunday evening after picking up an injury, and the Brazilian completed 81 minutes. However, the performance of the 31-year-old was far from impressive.

Manchester Evening News handed the midfielder a 5/10 rating for his showing, with Samuel Luckhurst stating "he fell off the pace," and unfortunately, his statistics don't paint a pretty picture either.

Casemiro was ineffective both in and out of possession this afternoon. The former Real Madrid star failed to control the tie, often being wasteful on the ball and forcing it at times, as shown by his dismal 66% pass accuracy and the fact he lost the ball 17 times.

He's in the side for his defensive capabilities and ability to stop danger at the source, but much like the rest of the season, he was left chasing shadows with his lack of athleticism and ability to cover ground on display.

Bruno Fernandes

The number 18 only won four of his 11 duels all game, winning one out of five on the ground. Casemiro also committed four fouls and picked up a yellow for an erratic late lunge, which proves he was struggling in the middle of the park.

A poor showing due to a lack of sharpness or a sign that Ten Hag must look to move him on in the near future? Time will tell.

Arsenal could sign their next Van Persie for £60m this winter

Arsenal head into the January transfer window urgently needing new recruits if they are to keep pace with Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title.

The Gunners endured a wretched end to 2023, failing to win four of their last five league encounters.

During that run, Mikel Arteta's men have only scored four times. It's a far cry from the devastating attack at the Emirates Stadium throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

It's just as well the market has opened for business, then, with Edu surely working overtime to bolster the club's ranks.

Arsenal's plans for the January transfer window

A number of areas are in need of strengthening over the next month. With injuries and fitness problems prevalent among the backline, signing another defender would go down a treat.

However, you feel if Arsenal are to take themselves to the next level then securing a move for a top-level centre-forward should be a high priority.

Ivan Toney reportedly tops their list with reports in recent days suggesting they "want" to do a deal for the Brentford centre-forward. It's also thought that the likes of Victor Osimhen of Napoli and Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen are also on their list.

Another option hails from the Netherlands. That's according to The Times who suggest the north Londoners could make a move for Santiago Gimenez at Feyenoord.

Mbappe-like striker 1 of 5 players Arsenal could sign instead of Ivan Toney

Arsenal could turn to one of these alternatives rather than signing Ivan Toney in 2024.

Matt Dawson

Dec 25, 2023

Journalist Gary Jacob wrote: “Gimenez, the 22-year-old who has scored 43 goals for Feyenoord across all competitions since the start of last season, is another option Arsenal have been considering.”

Previous reports state that the Mexican could cost around £60m, a great deal cheaper than the £100m Brentford allegedly want for Toney.

How Santiago Gimenez compares to Robin van Persie

The mere thought of Robin van Persie in 2024 will still send shudders through the spines of Arsenal supporters.

Despite a goal-laden spell with the Gunners he isn't particularly well-liked at the Emirates having famously traded London for Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson.

robin-van-persie-arsenal-transfer-liverpool-wenger-luis-suarez

It was well worth moving for Van Persie who would go on to win the Premier League at Old Trafford. That came after a remarkable haul of 37 goals in his final campaign under Arsene Wenger's wing.

The Dutch sensation was brought to the club from Feyenoord in April 2004 for an undisclosed fee when he was just 20 years of age. Gimenez is currently two years older and like Arsenal's former flying Dutchman, is plying his trade at Feyenoord.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

He is just as devastating in front of goal too, using his lethal left foot to punish opposition defences seemingly every week. Does that sound familiar?

Van Persie will forever be remembered for having one of the most devastating left feet in Premier League history. Indeed, only Robbie Fowler and Mo Salah have more goals courtesy of their dynamite left feet.

It would be a stretch to suggest that Gimenez could replicate that but he certainly already has an "insane" goal-scoring record as scout Antonio Mango suggested.

Throughout the 2023/24 season to date, the 24-cap star has found the net 20 times in 22 games, with 18 of those strikes coming in 16 league outings. This season isn't just a one-off either, as the Eredivisie star banged in 28 goals last term.

This may not be the mega-money Toney or Osimhen-like signing that supporters are crying out but he'd surely be an upgrade on their current options. After all, Eddie Nketiah, who started against Fulham has hardly been scoring for fun.

The England international did net a trio of goals against Sheffield United but he has failed to beat the goalkeeper in the league since then. That's nine straight league fixtures without adding to his tally. Abysmally, Nketiah is also without a single league goal away from the Emirates Stadium in over a year of football.

Clearly, the Gunners require someone better and in Gimenez, they would find just that.

Who will win the World Cup? The captains have their say

Is it England? Or India? Or Australia? Or is there a dark horse lurking?

ESPNcricinfo staff23-May-2019

Kane Williamson will hope for a World Cup similar to 2015, Dimuth Karunaratne probably not•IDI via Getty Images

Aaron Finch (Australia)
It’s a good question, I think, England have been in great form over the last couple of years and along with India, they’ve probably been the standout performers. So you’d have to say England are definitely the favourites.I think it’s important that some of our guys have got that World Cup experience and having, I think, six players who have been a part of a winning World Cup will hold us in good stead going forward, hopefully. But it’s a different tournament and, once you get out and start playing, the pressure takes over. So it’ll be a great tournament.Eoin Morgan (England)
I’ve no idea. I don’t think there’s anybody that’s head and shoulders above everybody else. In a 10-team World Cup, the ten best teams in the world, it’s going to be an extraordinarily competitive tournament. And I think there will be some quality cricket played. We’re really looking forward to playing.Of course being at home will be a factor. It’s called home advantage for a reason. We get to spend a lot of time in our own beds, we’ll see a lot of our families, and get to prepare like we have done for a number of years now. But England’s a great place to come and play cricket, if you ask any of these guys or any of their players, they love coming here and playing.Virat Kohli (India)
We’ve had both our warm-up games televised already so there’s much pressure on the team wherever we play. The way I look at it, there’s always going to be a huge fan-base for us anywhere we play in the world. But I have to agree with Aaron, I think England is probably – in their conditions – the most strong side in this tournament, but I also agree with Morgs, that all ten teams are so well balanced and so strong, and the fact that this is a tournament where we have to play everyone once, makes it all the more challenging. I think that’s going to be the best thing about this tournament, I see this as probably one of the most competitive World Cups that people are going to see7:10

Runorder: India? Australia? England?

Sarfaraz Ahmed (Pakistan)
As Morgan and Kohli said, all the teams are really balanced, and all are good teams, so I wish them all the very best and I think people will watch great cricket here.Definitely if you’ve seen the past results of Pakistan teams in England – I’m talking about the 1992 Test series, or the 1999 World Cup or 2017 [Champions Trophy] – Pakistan has been very good in England. So we are very confident, in’shallah, we will do very well.Dimuth Karunaratne (Sri Lanka)
We have played good cricket and have good experience [of playing] in England as well, so we will try to do well, and do our best. We came early to get some confidence in the conditions, we are in good shape and will do our best.Kane Williamson (New Zealand)
There are a few guys who were in the last World Cup, which is great, so there is some experience there. But naturally, with four years in between tournaments, there are a lot of new players as well. I guess there’s been a lot of talk around rankings, favourites, underdogs, but I think the thing that stands out is how balanced all the teams are and, when it comes to the day, anything can happen, which makes the way for a really exciting competition.Faf du Plessis (South Africa)
If you look at international cricket right around the circuit, you’ll see very close competitive series home and away. It’s not just more home teams that are dominating. So, like the other captains are saying, I think all of us are really excited to try this new tournament, with everyone playing everyone once. I think it’s a great tournament.Mashrafe Mortaza (Bangladesh)
We have a great team mix, probably as good as we have ever had. We have some young players coming through and we are very excited about them.Jason Holder (West Indies)
To play every side is great for us. We worked hard with the qualifiers to get here, that means it is the top 10 in the world, we want to play them all and give ourselves a shot. The team that wins will definitely deserve it.Gulbadin Naib (Afghanistan)
We have peace in Afghanistan now and cricket is a huge part of that. We are very happy and hopefully that can help us produce good performances. We’re excited to be here in front of the crowds. It’s the top ten teams in the world and we are proud to be representing Afghanistan.

Troublesome ankle puts Mark Wood in doubt for West Indies game

Fast bowler Mark Wood is set to undergo a fitness test on Friday morning ahead of England’s World Cup match against West Indies.Wood, who has bowled the fastest delivery (154kph) in the tournament to date, reported discomfort in his left ankle following Saturday’s victoryover Bangladesh. With rain forcing England to abandon most of their plans for outdoor training plans since, he has little chance to assess the severity of the problem.ALSO READ: Buttler reports for England training after recovering from thigh bruising“His ankle is a little bit sore at the moment,” England captain Eoin Morgan said. “We haven’t bowled for a few days so it depends how hefeels when he bowls in the morning. If it’s still sore, we probably won’t take a risk.”However, England had better news of Jos Buttler. He was able to take full part in training on Friday – he even performed some keepingdrills in the driving rain – after sustaining a bruised hip on Saturday that prevented him from keeping wicket. He is now consideredfully fit and will take back the gloves on Friday.Wood’s loss would be a significant blow to England. Several West Indies batsmen had looked distinctly uncomfortable against Wood in theCaribbean and, on a surface that generally offers a little bounce, both sides have talked of the potential importance of pace bowling. While the injury is not thought to be serious, England are unlikely to take a chance with Wood, considering he has undergone three operations on that left ankle. That having been said, this is an important game for both sides. Whichever loses it may face a real scrap to qualify for thesemi-finals.Moeen Ali, who was at his wife’s bedside as she gave birth to their second child on Wednesday, was back at training on Thursday and maywell return to the side instead of one of the seamers. With the Southampton pitch having been under cover for most of the week, theremight have been an increasing temptation to play the extra seamer but, with Wood an injury doubt, it is probable Moeen will return in hisplace.
