Levy set for loss as £26 million Tottenham player told to find new club

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy appears ready to take a loss on a senior first-teamer this summer, who will be told that he's free to leave.

Spurs now considering over a dozen player sales before 2024/2025

Reliable media sources, like FA registered intermediary Paul O'Keefe, who regularly breaks Spurs news on X, state that the Lilywhites are now considering sales for over a dozen players when the transfer window reopens.

Indeed, it is believed Spurs chiefs and manager Ange Postecoglou would be willing to part ways with the squad members in question if suitable offers arrive, which highlights the scale of their potential rebuild over these next few years.

While these players aren't named specifically, supporters and critics can hazard a pretty good guess as to who they might be. Indeed, Bryan Gil, Giovani Lo Celso, Troy Parrott, Joe Rodon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Richarlison, Tanguy Ndombele, Sergio Reguilon, Japhet Tanganga, Manor Solomon and Djed Spence have all been linked with permanent Spurs exits in the last few months, but there are a couple of mystery names who have yet to be mentioned.

O'Keefe's claim falls in line with Postecoglou's latest admission that Tottenham need to implement serious change.

"We need change. Change has to happen," said Postecoglou on the Tottenham project.

"You can’t want to alter your course and expect the same people are going to be on that. It’s just not going to happen. We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about.

"It’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey."

The aforementioned crop are sure-fire contenders for Postecoglou's axe, but there now appears to be another exit candidate in defender Emerson Royal. The Brazilian, who's featured 22 times in the league this season, has been filling in for the injured Destiny Udogie at left-back in recent weeks.

Levy ready to take loss as Emerson told he's free to leave Tottenham

According to Football Insider and journalist Wayne Veysey, he could well be sold this summer. Indeed, it is believed Spurs chiefs are set to tell Emerson to find a new club, with Levy ready to take a small loss on the £26 million they paid for his services in 2021.

Emerson Royal for Tottenham

The north Londoners will apparently accept an offer of around £20 million for the former Real Betis and Barcelona full-back, who was tipped for stardom at Spurs by former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell when he first signed.

“Let me tell you, this guy is very, very good. He is all action. He is up and down, very quick and loves to attack," said Campbell to Football Insider.

“The way Spurs play, with the full-backs bombing on, he is perfect. He is relentless down the flank because he is an incredibly fit guy. He also has good quality on the ball so I expect him to quickly become a fan favourite there."

Man Utd must sell disaster signing who earns 7x more than Amad

The rogue cascade from the Old Trafford roof was an allegorical expression of all that has gone wrong at Manchester United.

As the players trudged off the pitch on Sunday evening, there was surely an understanding that the Premier League campaign must go down as a failure, eighth-placed ahead of the final two fixtures and with two wins from 11.

Isolated, a 1-0 defeat against title-chasing Arsenal, who are so oiled, so slick, so sublime in their football, is not the worst result in the world. Erik ten Hag has bemoaned injuries interminably but the Dutchman does have a point – Man United have been ravaged on that front and building on last season's tentative success was always going to be difficult.

But this is emblematic of a wider, gaping problem, with the Gunners firing themselves back into first place and United dismayed after suffering a ninth home defeat of the campaign in all competitions.

There was, at least, something of a response after being carved open at Selhurst Park on Sunday, with Man United's inherent youth pedigree proving itself once again as the shining light, the beacon of hope, that may yet see the sun stretch onto the leaky Theatre once again.

Amad Diallo's performance vs Arsenal

Long have United reaped the rewards of a steady flow of academy and youthful talent filtering through to the first team – the historic record of having an academy graduate in the Premier League matchday squad since October 1937 stands tall and proud to this day.

Against Arsenal, Kobbie Mainoo featured and continued to offer such promise, a diamond in the rough, though he wasn't the standout for the home team. While he's not from Carrington, Amad Diallo produced yet another convincing display that suggests he should earn a more regular role under Ten Hag.

Starting for the first time in the Premier League this season, the 21-year-old lasted 70 minutes but certainly made an impression on the right flank, offering a rounded performance full of energy and spirit.

Amad is showcasing his quality and ability to step up in big games and he must surely play a bigger part in his team's football next season, having also scored a dramatic winner against Liverpool in their FA Cup quarter-final tie.

Penning his post-match thoughts, the Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst handed the young winger a 7/10 rating and wrote: 'His first start in 886 days and performed so enterprisingly it remains mystifying why Erik ten Hag has started Antony and Omari Forson over him.'

It was a combative and creative effort of equal measure, with the young Ivorian's ball-carrying skills having an influence on the team that certain positional peers failed to muster up themselves.

Manchester United winger Amad Diallo

Indeed, Antony replaced Amad and while he enjoyed a lively cameo, the Brazil international has flattered to deceive in England and must surely now be sold this summer.

Why Antony must be sold

In the summer of 2022, Antony was signed from Eredivisie side Ajax for a jaw-dropping fee of £86m, but his first season left plenty to be desired and the current campaign has seen a return of just three goals and two assists from 38 matches in all competitions.

Earlier in the campaign, Forbes' Sam Pilger remarked that Facundo Pellistri needed "to start games ahead of the woeful Antony", but might it be that Amad has been the rightful heir to the struggling forward's position in Ten Hag's squad all along?

Antony is an aggressive and committed player, to his credit, ranking among the top 4% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles, the top 7% for interceptions and the top 1% for blocks per 90, as per FBref.

But he also ranks among the bottom 4% for goals scored and the bottom 21% for assists per 90 – content creator Liam Canning has dubbed the 24-year-old as "unpredictable" in the past but his inability to hit a vein of prolific form has become dully tedious, in all honesty.

He was signed for a mammoth figure but his travails over the past two years have left him valued at just £27m at present, according to Football Transfers, which is probably a fair measure of where he is at on the market.

Moreover, he is earning a staggering salary for one so ineffective, taking home £200k per week to place him on the edge of the bloated overpaid top earners at Old Trafford.

Amad, naturally, is nowhere near the upper end of the salary rankings at the club, earning just short of £29k per week, and while that is a fair reflection of his age and current standing in the team, this is seven times less than Antony's pay packet and based on recent performances, the disparity in wage does not equate to a difference in playing level. In fact, Amad might just be the superior player.

Of that entire list, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford are the only players who can state that they have enjoyed high levels of success at Man United.

Antony is not proving himself to be Red Devil material and there it seems unlikely that he will ever reach the height that would see him playing up to the price tag. He must be sold this summer, with Ten Hag perhaps even wise to unleash Amad in his stead over the final two fixtures of the term, ensuring that he never wears this historic shirt again.

INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have much work to do in Greater Manchester this summer, and while there are several other pressing concerns to focus on, cashing in on a wayward flop like Antony must be at the forefront of the to-do list.

The England international's dismal form continued as he once again failed to find the back of the net against Liverpool on Sunday at Old Trafford. Rashford, once hailed as one of United's brightest stars, has received criticism from all quarters, including from club legend Gary Neville, who was disappointed with his performance against the Reds.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Neville claimed that it has become difficult to watch the attacker play these days while pointing out one instance from the match that United fans won't let the player get away with. The 26-year-old, who scored 30 goals across all competitions in the 2022-23 season, has seen a dramatic dip in form.

  • WHAT GARY NEVILLE SAID

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Red Devils captain said: "There's no confidence. He had a one-on-one with Konate and he's ended back up at centre-back. The United fans aren't going to let him get away with that. Whatever happens, you still have to go for it and take the one on one on.

"He might not be having a great day, great time, but he's just turned back and that tells you where his head is at. It's been going on for 14 months, he scored 30 goals the season before last. I'd like to think he can get his confidence back but it's looking like a struggle. The game doesn't look enjoyable for him right now and that's sad."

He added: "It's sad watching that kid because he has been a joy for United at times in his career but it is getting hard work for him and hard work for fans to watch him."

AC Milan has repeatedly ventured into the fashion market in recent years, releasing crossovers with brands such as Off White and Arena. And on Monday, it unveiled its latest high profile fashion pursuit, announcing a collaboration with Major League Baseball's New York Yankees. Both teams have investors from U.S. based RedBird Capital Partners – leaving ample room for partnerships on such collections.

The collection includes varsity jackets, hoodies, t-shirts, and New Era caps, all adorned with a new logo that merges the crests of Milan and the Yankees.

    WHAT THEY SAID

Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani explained the reasoning behind the line in an official statement: "The entirety of this collaboration is an homage to the transcendent impact that the cities of Milan and New York maintain on fashion and culture around the world, and we are eager to see that cross-cultural spirit reflected as people enjoy the collection.”

Yankees President Randy Levine echoed that sentiment: "The New York Yankees and AC Milan are each synonymous with their respective sports and cities. Bringing them together for this project made sense on so many levels, especially considering how our brands resonate among fans of both sports and fashion. We are also thrilled to deepen the ties between our teams and congratulate those who provided input in the design for making a collection that has style and substance."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

There is already a strong influence in Milan's first team squad. USMNT captain Christian Pulisic is a regular for the Rossoneri – and enjoyed the best season of his professional career to date in black and red last campaign. Yunus Musah, a fixture for the U.S. side, made 40 appearances for the Italian side last year.

Postecoglou drops Bissouma in predicted Spurs lineup vs Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur begin a gruelling run of games to close the 2023/24 Premier League on Sunday afternoon as they host title-chasing rivals Arsenal.

Ange Postecoglou's side were well worth their money as they drew 2-2 at the Emirates Stadium in the reverse fixture but much has changed since those balmy days, with inconsistent form and damaging injuries pulling Spurs away from the front of the division.

Still, fifth in the standings and behind Aston Villa in the top four by six points with two games in hand, Tottenham's hopes of returning to Europe's elite hang in the balance, and victory over the Gunners might be the galvanising result needed to create a fantastic finish to Postecoglou's first year.

The hosts are missing first-choice left-back Destiny Udogie, who will not recover in time for Italy's EURO 2024 campaign, but Pedro Porro and Richarlison are expected to be involved.

After being thrashed 4-0 against Newcastle United last time out, some might expect Postecoglou to ring the changes, with three alterations possibly being made.

1

GK – Guglielmo Vicario

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario

Let's imagine for a moment that Tottenham had stuck with Hugo Lloris this season, and had not signed Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli in an initial £17m deal.

The Italian shot-stopper has been immense this season and, having not missed a minute in the Premier League, will be eager to strike a blow to Arsenal's title ambitions.

2

RB – Pedro Porro

Tottenham defender Pedro Porro

Porro was forced off at St. James' Park with a hamstring strain, leaving Postecoglou and co sweating over his fitness, but it looks like he's ready to start at right-back once again.

So impressive in his all-encompassing role, Porro has scored one goal and supplied seven assists across 29 Premier League appearances this season, as per Sofascore, creating ten big chances, averaging 1.6 key passes, 2.8 tackles and 5.7 ball recoveries per game.

3

CB – Cristian Romero

Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero

Cristian Romero is one of the meanest, toughest-tackling defenders in the Premier League and he has been an incredible asset for Postecoglou in his first campaign in English football.

Described as a "monster" by The Athletic's Charlie Eccleshare, the Argentinian World Cup winner is arguably Spurs' most important player and he will be right at the centre of the action tomorrow.

4

CB – Micky van de Ven

Micky van de Ven celebrates for Tottenham

Micky van de Ven did not enjoy his finest hour during Spurs' bitter defeat against Newcastle but that must not detract from an exemplary maiden season in the Premier League after joining from Wolfsburg in a £43m deal last summer.

Blessed with frightening pace, his elite athleticism will be called into additional importance given the absence of the electric Udogie.

5

LB – Ben Davies

Tottenham defender Ben Davies

That brings us to Ben Davies, who is experienced and industrious but simply doesn't have the same tools as his injured positional peer. Bukayo Saka, Arsenal's main man, will have been briefed on pushing to exploit this possible chink.

Still, he's an "intelligent" player – as has been said by pundit Danny Murphy – and he will be raring for the chance to impress on what is a rare outing for the Welshman.

6

CM – Pape Matar Sarr

Tottenham midfielder Pape Sarr

The energy and exuberance of Pape Matar Sarr will be vital in battling against an imperious Gunners midfield consisting of, notably, Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, and he will come in for the struggling Yves Bissouma – the latter man branded "inconsistent" by reporter George Sessions.

The young star has offered performances of great promise this year and he will be a major player in Postecoglou's system for years to come.

7

CM – Rodrigo Bentancur

joao-gomes-rodrigo-bentancur-tottenham-opinion

Rodrigo Bentancur started against the Magpies two weeks ago and he will likely retain his place in the North London Derby, albeit pushed to complete a more defensive role in Bissouma's absence.

The Malian may well start but he has been picked apart in recent matches and has done little to prove that he deserves a ninth successive start in pivotal circumstances.

8

RW – Dejan Kulusevski

Dejan Kulusevski for Tottenham

Dejan Kulusevski's unwavering spot in the Tottenham starting line-up is no more, with Postecoglou recently favouring the breakneck pace of Brennan Johnson, who has been in fine form, clinching nine goal contributions from his past 15 Premier League matches.

Still, Kulusevski is technically superior and will be pivotal in slowing down the pace of proceedings – Arsenal would love to exploit Spurs' expansive, fast-flowing system with incisive breaks.

9

AM – James Maddison

James Maddison for Tottenham.

What a signing. What a player. While James Maddison's match level has nosedived after the England international spent much of the winter months recovering from injury, he is still one of Europe's elite playmakers, described as a "magician" by Statman Dave in the past.

As per FBref, the £170k-per-week phenom ranks among the top 8% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 6% for passes attempted and the top 1% for progressive passes and shot-creating actions per 90.

10

LW – Brennan Johnson

Brennan Johnson for Tottenham

With Kulusevski back in the starting line-up to aid Spurs in finding control and fluidity against suffocating opposition, Johnson must get the nod on the left in place of loanee Timo Werner.

The Wales international has gone from strength to strength after a slow start to his Tottenham career and he has the electric pace and developing potency in front of goal to hurt Mikel Arteta's men.

21 y/o "magician" who Bielsa loved set to leave Leeds in permanent transfer

One player on the books at Leeds United is expected to leave Elland Road in a permanent transfer this summer.

Latest Leeds rumours

The Whites are now gearing up for the Championship playoffs after missing out on automatic promotion to both Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

Daniel Farke’s side aren’t exactly coming into the playoffs in great form either, winning just one of their final six second-tier games. The German’s former side, Norwich City, stand in Leeds’ way ahead of a potential Wembley showdown with either Southampton or West Brom.

Leeds plotting bid to sign 23-goal star who'd thrive with Summerville

ByDan Emery May 6, 2024

Off the pitch, it emerged over the weekend that famous Hollywood actor Will Ferrell is buying a minority stake in Leeds, something which could help the Whites land another lucrative documentary series. Ferrell is set to join Russell Crowe in part-owning Leeds, as well as golfing stars like Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

In regards to transfer rumours, there could be a number of departures in Yorkshire over the coming weeks, with Luke Ayling confirming he’s probably played his last game for the club as he eyes a permanent transfer to Middlesbrough. Now, another player out on loan is looking likely to leave for good.

Lewis Bate expected to leave Leeds

According to The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Joe Donnohue, midfielder Lewis Bate is expected to leave Leeds on a permanent transfer this summer, three years after arriving from Chelsea. The 21-year-old has been on loan in League Two with MK Dons but suffered a huge playoff setback against Crawley Town, losing the first leg 3-0.

Leeds midfielder Lewis Bate.

Bate has been a regular for MK Dons since the New Year, playing alongside former Whites forward Max Dean. It isn’t the midfielder’s first taste of football out on loan, though, with Bate spending last season with Oxford United. He impressed former boss Karl Robinson, who waxed lyrical over the player, calling him a “magician”.

"He’s one of the best I’ve worked with, and I mean that. The problem is we’ve got him so young, we’ll be watching him in three or four years’ time running games at the top level – I’m sure of that. The kid’s a magician. He needs goals and assists, that becomes the reason you play in the central area of the football pitch."

Meanwhile, Bate, who has made five senior appearances for the Whites, also came in for praise from Marcelo Bielsa during his time with Leeds, with the Argentine saying: “He’s a player who performs better every time in the games he’s a part of. He’s a player that is constantly managing the ball and he doesn’t lose it very often. And he’s got a good sense of a pass, he can thread it through the needle.”

It looks as if Bate’s days on the books with Leeds are numbered, though, with his contract in Yorkshire set to expire at the end of June.

Sports Minister slams CSA over transformation

Nathi Mthethwa wants more people of colour in leadership positions both in the board and in the team

Firdose Moonda20-Jun-2020

T20 Global League

Cricket South Africa has come under severe criticism from the country’s minister of sport, art and culture Nathi Mthethwa who questioned the organisation’s commitment to transformation at a parliamentary briefing on Friday. Despite CSA exceeding their transformation targets on the field for the 2018-19 season, Mtethwa was concerned that several senior positions since an overhaul of the board last year were occupied by white men.In December 2019, CSA CEO Thabang Moroe was suspended on allegations of misconduct. His case is ongoing and Dr. Jacques Faul has been in the position of acting CEO since. Under Faul, Graeme Smith was appointed director of cricket, replacing Corrie van Zyl, who occupied the post in interim capacity but was also suspended.Van Zyl has since returned to work, under Smith, who named Mark Boucher the national men’s coach. Boucher displaced Enoch Nkwe, who was working as interim team director and took the South African squad to India, where they were whitewashed 3-0. Nkwe was named as Boucher’s deputy. Boucher also brought in Jacques Kallis as batting consultant and Paul Harris as spin bowling consultant, in addition to Charl Langeveldt (bowling coach) and Justin Ontong (fielding coach). At the parliamentary briefing, CSA President Chris Nenzani was asked if the appointments of Faul, Smith and Boucher represented a regression of the board’s transformation policy given that two of them had replaced black African employees. Nenzani’s response was that the appointments had been made on merit.”I felt insulted with your [Nenzani’s] intervention when you said you only take people on merit,” Mtethwa said. “When we talk of cricket and going to the heart and core‚ you look at the CEO‚ you look at the director of cricket and the coach; you’ll find the deputy being an African.””You look at the batting specialist and you come and say to the nation that there’s nothing wrong and there’s no regression in transformation. I feel particularly insulted. It says that there’s a particular posture that has been taken that says Africans can be elsewhere in other areas that are not core ones. There’s no core area above the top five. It’s only one and that person is the deputy to the coach. I’m not going to be smiling at that kind of statement.”Mtethwa found it incredulous that CSA could not find black African candidates to fill senior roles when it has been 26 years since the official end of Apartheid (1994) and almost three decades (1991) since the country’s black and white cricket boards were unified. “Does it mean that after 26 years‚ there hasn’t been anybody who hasn’t been able to fill one of these positions? The only people with merit are white. I take exception to that.”Since readmission, CSA have had two black African CEOs, Gerald Majola and Thabang Moroe and six (of eight) presidents of colour including Krish Mackerdhuj, Percy Sonn, Norman Arendse, Ray Mali, Mtutuzeli Nyoka and now Nenzani. Apart from Nkwe’s brief stint with the national team, they have had only one other home-grown head coach of colour, Russell Domingo, and only one permanently appointed national captain of colour, Hashim Amla.Although there will be no sanctions against CSA at this point, earlier this month, Mtethwa met with the Eminent Persons Group expressing similar concerns and proposed legislation to address the pace of transformation. “The Minister raised his concern on the leadership and governance matters that have consistently undermined the development and transformation of sport in the country. He highlighted the urgent need for a fundamental discussion of re-imagining sport in the country, a major part of that being transformation,” a sports ministry press release from June 5 said.CSA have long-stated their commitment to transformation and “welcomed” the EPG report when it was released, noting the areas that still needed improvement, especially at school level. “The participation of senior schools from townships (previously disadvantaged black residential areas) amounts to 515 schools of the 1023 participating high schools. The participation of girls in senior schools’ cricket is growing. This growth will accelerate in the foreseeable future,” a CSA statement said. However, the concern lies more at the top where big changes have been made in response to the chaos that engulfed CSA late last year, In the space of a few weeks, their major sponsor Standard Bank opted not to renew their arrangement, three board members resigned and the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) voiced continued unhappiness with the CSA CEO. On December 6, Moroe was suspended, and 10 days later Nkwe was demoted and new appointments made. At the time, an organisation called the Black African Cricket Clubs accused CSA of a whitewash at senior level but Smith responded by providing an assurance of his commitment to transformation.
