Harbhajan Singh 'will do what is required to succeed' at the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders

Offspinner is set to play competitive cricket for the first time since May 2019

Harbhajan Singh has not played competitive cricket in nearly two years and is entering his first bio-bubble environment since the Covid-19 pandemic began, but feels sure of “what needs to be done” as he prepares to represent his third IPL franchise – the Kolkata Knight Riders – in what will be his 13th IPL season.”These questions [about playing after a gap] are asked because I haven’t played a lot of cricket of late so teams are a bit defensive at auction and they don’t want to bid for me,” Singh, who was bought by the Knight Riders for INR 2 crore (US$ 273,000 approx.) in the 2021 auction, told PTI. “But let me remind all that when I did well for CSK in 2019 IPL, I hadn’t played any domestic cricket. I came to the camp, prepared and went into the match. At my level and experience, I know what needs to be done.”I don’t need to play domestic cricket for Punjab and stop a young talent from flourishing. That boy needs that chance more than me.”Singh, 40, had pulled out of last year’s IPL, when he was part of the Chennai Super Kings, because of “personal reasons” and had said “family takes precedence over sport”. He said he felt more confident now about being in a bubble because the IPL as back in India and people “have now got used to new normal”.”Last year, when IPL happened, Covid-19 in India was at its peak,” he said. “I was concerned about my family and also about hard quarantine in India after coming back. But this year, it’s happening in India and also we have now got used to new normal. Vaccines have come. Also it’s my family which pushed. My wife told me that I should go and play.”Singh had played 11 matches in the 2019 IPL for the Super Kings and picked up 16 wickets while conceding only 7.09 runs per over. Singh played eight of those 11 matches in Chennai and Delhi, where pitches are known to favour spinners more than fast bowlers. This time, he joins the Knight Riders’ spin attack of Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav, and the franchise has its 14 league games spread across four cities: Chennai (three), Mumbai (two), Ahmedabad (four) and Bengaluru (five).”We have a good team,” Singh said. “T20 is all about three players in a team, could be any three, clicking on that particular day. You see Mumbai Indians are a side which has all its bases covered but they are still beatable. It could be a Rahul Tripathi or a Nitish Rana can win it for us.”Singh has primarily been a T20 player for over three years now, having last played first-class cricket in November 2017, for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy. Since then, he has featured in domestic T20s [Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy] twice and has mainly been playing the IPL since 2018, barring three games in the domestic circuit.”I have got nothing to prove to anyone. My intention is to play well, enjoy my stint out there in the middle and playing cricket still gives me that satisfaction. I have set a standard for myself and if I don’t meet that, I don’t need anyone else but I will blame myself. I need to ask myself, ‘did I put in the optimum effort that was required’,” he said. “Yes, I am not a 20-year-old anymore and won’t be training like I did then. But yes, as a 40-year-old, I know I am fit and will certainly do what is required to succeed at this level. The expectation is still going to be there and responsibilities that were there when I was playing for India remains.”Every season, I introspect if I have it in me to play or not. If I feel I am done, I will say, ‘thank you, very much’. If I feel I am doing alright, you will see me next year.”

Phil Foden, Jamal Musiala, Lamine Yamal and the six players making their FIFPRO Men's World 11 shortlist debuts

GOAL takes a look at six first-time FIFPRO World 11 nominees, with some big names making their debuts on the 2024 shortlist

The footballing world has been lucky in recent years, with so many top players performing at their peak for so long. There are many nominees on this year's FIFPRO Men's World 11 shortlist with multiple acknowledgments under their belt. But at some point, the next generation has to come through.

For some, such as Phil Foden, a first time nomination has perhaps come a little late. But for the majority of the six first-time nominees, everything seems to be coming together at exactly the right time, with many years of promise to come.

No nominee is guaranteed a spot among the final 11 winners, of course (the 2024 winners will be revealed next week). But a glance at the ages here, ranging from 17-24, suggests that the select group might be award contenders for the foreseeable future.

GOAL looks at the first-time nominees for the FIFPRO Men's World 11, how they got here, and why there could be further nominations in their future.

One for the purists! Jeremie Frimpong was a crucial part of Xabi Alonso's immensely successful Bayer Leverkusen team, serving as a valuable dynamic attacking presence as a right wing back. His nine goals and nine assists in the Bundesliga alone are part of the reason why the German side broke their "Neverkusen" curse.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesWilliam Saliba, Arsenal

The best center back in the Premier League? He's certainly up there. The attacking players may get the plaudits for Arsenal, but it's their rock solid defense that have made them perennial title contenders. Saliba is the Rolls Royce at the heart of it all, forming a formidable partnership with Gabriel at the back. With the duo bossing it, Arsenal conceded just 29 goals in the league last season.

GettyPhil Foden, Manchester City

It's quite incredible that it's taken Phil Foden this long to get voted onto the shortlist. Then again, it did seem as if last year was when it finally came together for the man Pep Guardiola once likened to Andres Iniesta. Erling Haaland did all of the goalscoring for City last year, but Foden provided pretty much everything else, putting up his best attacking numbers to date and winning the PFA Player of the Year.

GettyJamal Musiala, Bayern Munich

What a class of young midfielders Europe has these days. Jude Bellingham, Florian Wirtz and Foden would be enough. But throw Musiala in, and the next generation looks bright. Bayern may have gone without a trophy last season, but none of that can be blamed on the former Chelsea academy talent, who was magnificent throughout. He scored 12 and assisted eight to complete a breakout year. More honors are sure to come.

In the race: Ipswich line up last gasp move for “prolific” Broja upgrade

Ipswich Town will be looking ahead to their next Premier League fixture back at Portman Road versus Fulham, but will have to navigate what could be a dramatic transfer deadline day first before league action gets back underway.

The Tractor Boys are still very much in for a whole host of players, with Armando Broja's name constantly floating about, but there is no confirmation coming for the Albanian to join the building yet, amid reports of a potential collapse in the deal.

Armando Broja

Therefore, new striker targets could now be on the late Ipswich shopping list, with this goal machine who is tearing up Belgium now allegedly on the agenda.

Ipswich pondering concrete offer for Cercle Brugge star

As per Belgian journalist Pieter-Jan Calceon, Kieran McKenna and Co are now reportedly going after Cercle Brugge star Kevin Denkey as another option up top.

As reported by Het Nieuwsblad – via Sport Witness – the likes of Lille, Real Sociedad and Bayer Leverkusen have all been previously interested in the Togo international in the past, but none of those sides from Europe were ever tempted into making an outright offer for the 23-year-old's services minus their initial admiration.

Scoring goals for fun in the Jupiler Pro League for some time now, this potential incoming could well be viewed as an upgrade on Broja entering through the door, who regularly fired blanks last season out on loan at Fulham, compared to Denkey terrorising defences week in week out.

Of course, the step-up in quality to the Premier League is a different kettle of fish, but with George Hirst sidelined and Liam Delap yet to break his Tractor Boys duck, Denkey could be a useful new addition in the striker spots away from Broja.

What Denkey can offer Ipswich

The 23-year-old striker continues to be on fire for Brugge when it comes to clinically slotting away chances, with the in-form number nine bagging 54 goals from 133 games in total, including two already during the infancy of the new Jupiler Pro League season.

Denkey tore the Belgian top-flight to shreds last season with a ridiculous 27 goals in total, whilst his Albanian counterpart struggled at Craven Cottage to ever get going away from Chelsea, with zero strikes managed from eight forgettable outings on loan.

Averaging 4.2 shots per game last season in the league, Denkey would routinely pepper Premier League goalkeepers with a whole host of efforts, with a staggering 19 big chances also missed, even when taking into account his mightily impressive 27-goal return.

It's not a shock, therefore, to see the likes of football talent scout Jacek Kulig label the 23-year-old as being "prolific", something which Broja has notably struggled with, having only bagged eight top-flight strikes in England from 66 contests to date.

Still, the Chelsea number 19 could be seen as more of an Ipswich-style signing, owing to the fact McKenna used Hirst up front last season as a creative spark as much as an out-and-out goalscorer, with Broja picking up 11 assists across his up-and-down career to date.

Yet, adding in Denkey as a possible attacking upgrade would see Ipswich land a bold and frightening new option in attack for Premier League defences to keep tabs on, as more money continues to be splashed by the Suffolk side, in their ongoing bid to stay up.

Emery wants £50m+ star at Aston Villa but Man Utd are in talks to sign him

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has personally set his sights on signing a £50m+ player, however, Manchester United are in talks over a transfer.

Aston Villa's summer signings so far

NSWE and Monchi have backed Emery after he guided Villa to a top four finish in the Premier League last season, ensuring Champions League football will be on offer during the 2024/25 campaign. Eight new signings have been made, however, one of those, Cameron Archer, is already on the way out to Southampton.

Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen have been the biggest in regards to transfer fees, but it looks as if more could be on the way before the August 30 deadline.

For example, Fabrizio Romano has recently claimed that Aston Villa are in advanced talks with right-back Lutsharel Geertruida, however, a fee is yet to be agreed with Feyenoord.

"It's ongoing [Geertruida negotiations], it's not that close yet, it's well advanced on the player's side, because the player is keen on the move to the Premier League and to the Champions League. Also in this case, with Aston Villa, he's really attracted by the project of Unai Emery.

"But with Feyenoord it's always complicated to negotiate for Geertruida. He's a really important player for them and every time important clubs try to approach Feyenoord in recent years, Leipzig last year, PSG at the beginning of this summer transfer window, it has always been a tough story.

"He's a player they love at Feyenoord, and it's never easy to negotiate with Feyenoord for Hanchko, for Geertruida, all their superstars, they love to keep those players at the club."

Alongside Geertruida, Villa are also closing in on an academy addition in Manchester City’s Kane Taylor, but by the looks of things, Emery is eyeing another midfielder valued at more than £50m.

Emery wants to sign Ederson for Aston Villa

According to reports in Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, Aston Villa and rivals Man Utd are in the frame to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson before the deadline.

It is claimed that Emery personally ‘wishes’ to sign the 25-year-old, however, those at Old Trafford are in talks over a deal. Atalanta value Ederson at €60m (£51m) and it is added that Atletico Madrid are also in the picture for the player and even made a €45m (£38.3m) bid which was rejected.

Atalanta midfielder Ederson

The Brazil international can play as a central, holding or attacking midfielder and has been with the Serie A side since 2022. South American football expert Tim Vickery has heaped praise on him earlier this year, describing him as “strong” and “versatile”.

"24-years-old, strong, well-built central midfielder. Strong on the ball, versatile, box-to-box. Strong personality as well. The first time I remember him was his professional debut really. He was thrown in the deep end in a big team called Cruzeiro, who were really on the slide. They were relegated in dreadful form and even in this bad context, he stood out, so a lot of virtues."

Wickets could be called 'outs' in Hundred bid to attract wider audience

Wickets could be referred to as “outs” in the Hundred under proposed terms being discussed by the ECB to make cricket more accessible to the new audience the tournament is hoping to attract. The inaugural Hundred – postponed from last year – starts with a women’s match between Oval Invincibles and Manchester Originals at the Kia Oval on July 21 with the corresponding men’s fixture the following day at the same ground. The new competition introduces a number of playing innovations, not least the 100-ball innings, and organisers have said discussions over the terminology to be used in the tournament was prompted by focus group data suggesting cricket’s traditional language can prove a “barrier” to potential fans.Related

“The Hundred is designed to make cricket accessible to everyone, and research shows that the language of the game can sometimes be a barrier,” a Hundred spokesperson said.”Along with our broadcast partners, we want The Hundred to open cricket up to more people, as well as entertaining existing fans, so we’re discussing the clearest ways of explaining the game, but nothing’s been finalised.”News of the possible switch from the term wickets to “outs” sparked widespread discussion and some criticism on social media. It could be argued that if the Hundred is designed to attract new supporters and participants to cricket, then a move away from traditional terminology is effectively steering them away from a key aspect of the sport. On the other hand, getting people into cricket before fostering their enjoyment of other existing formats is seen as better than not attracting newcomers at all.It is also argued the fact that the term wicket can be used to describe a dismissal, the stumps and bails and even the pitch can be confusing to people not familiar with cricket. “Outs” is regarded as descriptive without being too distant from current terminology because it says what happens when the batter is dismissed.Another change being considered, and less likely to spark controversy, is using the word “batter” rather than batsman in both the men’s and women’s competitions. Anecdotally, many women playing and watching the game, have long supported the use of the gender neutral term batter.

'Bring whoever you want!' – Nicolas Jackson told to challenge Chelsea over Victor Osimhen transfer interest as young Blues forward finally finds feet at Stamford Bridge

Former Chelsea star Gus Poyet has urged Nicolas Jackson to challenge the Blues over their alleged pursuit of Victor Osimhen.

Jackson has scored eight Premier League goals in 13 appearances for the Blues in the 2024-25 campaign, and has been one of the club's best players this season. However, despite the striker cementing his place as the team's first-choice No.9, Chelsea have been strongly linked with a move for Napoli loanee Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian striker is currently on loan at Galatasaray and has taken the Turkish league by storm after scoring nine goals in 12 appearances.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Former Blues forward and Uruguay international Gus Poyet heaped praise on the Senegalese striker as he spoke on how the youngster has improved in stature since his debut in the Premier League last summer. Indeed, he is undoubtedly the club's first-choice striker now, although talk of Osimhen arriving, given his reputation as one of the top marksmen in Europe, isn't likely to sit well with the former Villarreal forward.

  • WHAT GUS POYET SAID

Speaking to , Poyet said: "I absolutely loved him in Spain, I think he was impressive. Again, he came to a club where it was 50/50. A striker needs a team to play well for him to go and finish, which is very important. He scored a lot last year, the problem was that Chelsea weren't doing well and people thought he didn't score enough. Again, the team has settled and he's taken advantage of that.

"Competition for place up front with a new signing? If I were him, I would say 'bring whoever you want'. I'm here every weekend. Now is he going to score a hat-trick against Spurs again? It's difficult, and that game last year was so unique with the high line."

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?

Maresca's men, who are unbeaten in their last seven matches across all competitions and thrashed Southampton 5-1 in the midweek, will be next seen in action this Sunday as they take on city rivals Tottenham. Jackson, who missed the win at St Mary's, is likely to return to the starting XI.

Chelsea could land Osimhen his next Kvaratskhelia in £60m sensation

Chelsea are looking to bolster their squad heading into the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, having finished sixth last season, five points away from a top-four finish, which would have seen them qualify for Champions League football.

New manager Enzo Maresca has already been equipped with reinforcements, such as Leicester City POTY Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Caleb Wiley, Renato Veiga, and Omari Kellyman.

Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

But Chelsea could still have further changes to their squad, with links circulating of adding another striker and potentially a left-winger to the mix, as well as some potential outgoings.

Chelsea transfer news

According to reports from Football Insider earlier this month, Chelsea are among the clubs keeping tabs on Crystal Palace star, Eberechi Eze, who is also attracting attention from Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester United.

The reports state Eze has a £60m release clause in his contract at Palace, but it does include some 'complications' such as a clause dependent on whether the buying club is in the Champions League or not.

Eberechi Eze celebrates for Crystal Palace

Eze made 31 appearances for Crystal Palace last season in all competitions, scoring 11 goals, providing six assists, and totalling 2,285 minutes of football.

Why Eze could thrive with Osimhen

By adding the creativity of Eze to the clinical finishing of Victor Osimhen – who could be on his way to west London this summer – you could have a recipe for success.

Osimhen made 32 appearances for Napoli last season, scoring 17 goals and providing four assists. The season prior, he managed 31 goals and five assists, showing his reliability at putting the ball in the back of the net.

A massive factor in Osimhen's success at Napoli, was playmaker and partner in crime, Kvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgia international managed nine assists in the 2023/24 season, and 17 in the 2022/23 season, showing his importance for chance creation.

It is then noteworthy that Eze is viewed as a similar player to Kvaratskhelia, according to FBref, thus ensuring that the Englishman could be Osimhen's new dream partner at Stamford Bridge.

Described as "mesmerising" by Palace teammate Joel Ward, Eze is highly praised for his ability on the ball, and the way he "glides over the pitch". His 3.02 successful take-ons per 90 highlight his ability to carry the ball, mixed with his 2.37 key passes per 90 – showing his end product doesn't lack.

Although Eze ranks marginally below Kvaratskhelia for assists per 90, averaging 0.18, to the Georgian's 0.19, the creative numbers such as progressive passes, key passes and passes into the penalty area all rank higher, showing the potential to strike a similar dynamic for the lethal Osimhen.

Pairing the creative passing and chance creation of Eze, with the 3.73 shots per 90, and 0.52 Non-Penalty goals per 90 of Osimhen, could be a recipe for plenty of goals in Chelsea blue.

Pairing Eze with Osimhen could also unlock even more for the 26-year-old Palace star, with extra attention being paid to the Nigerian striker, it would give Eze even more space to operate, and perhaps even unlock further his goal threat.
