FAQs: Will the Ashes 2021-22 go ahead as scheduled? What are the major issues?

With the impact of the pandemic making it a challenge for the series to go ahead, here’s where things stand as of now

Andrew McGlashan11-Aug-2021Is the Ashes really in doubt? In the current world there is doubt or uncertainty over so many things. It remains highly unlikely that the series won’t take place, although perhaps a little less unlikely than a few months ago. The financial impact for Cricket Australia – even if they could arrange a substitute series – doesn’t bear thinking about and then there’s the logistical nightmare that would be created if it was pushed back a year. It’s not just a case of Australia and England rearranging things among themselves. What are the major issues? The biggest sticking point is the ability of the England players’ families to be able to join them for at least part of the tour – probably over Christmas and New Year – as is traditional on Ashes tours. There’s also uncertainty, for both sides, over what bubble arrangements might be needed during the series and how much freedom players will have. The multi-format England stars who are involved in the T20 World Cup face up to four months away (and those that opt to head back to the IPL even longer). For those only involved in the Ashes it would likely be around two months away in Australia. As the pandemic rolled into its second year the ECB, as with many boards, made it clear that the mental health of the players would be a priority.Related

Could England tour without a number of players? In theory they could pick a squad from those willing to tour but head coach Chris Silverwood is understood to be very firm in wanting his best players available. England’s Test side is not in the strongest of health as it is, especially in the batting, and winning in Australia is a tough assignment. It’s 9-0 to Australia over the last two series they have hosted. Rightly or wrongly legacies and careers are judged by the Ashes. However, it may have to be accepted that not every first-choice player will travel. Why is it so hard for families to join? While some countries are opening up, Australia’s international borders remain firmly shut (as do New Zealand’s) with strict caps on the number of arrivals. Currently, anyone entering the country still has to spend two weeks in quarantine, although there have been exemptions for sports teams to train in that period. It also means no supporters from overseas. Even if families were permitted to join they, too, would need to quarantine. Sports teams, and those associated with them, are negotiated with the federal government above the current cap on arrivals (around 3000 per week) but it remains a controversial topic with more than 30,000 Australians overseas who want to return home. The Ashes has long been scheduled for this year, why is it an issue now?Largely because there is never any certainty in the current landscape. Twelve months ago it would have been hoped that by now there may have been more progress on opening up in Australia but that hasn’t been the case. England have also been far and away the busiest team during the pandemic with the knock-on effect on the players, most recently highlighted by the withdrawal of Ben Stokes from the India series. What’s the Covid-19 situation in Australia at the moment? On a global scale, the numbers remain very low but the country is currently going through one of its most challenging times of the pandemic as it tries to manage the Delta variant. Sydney is in the midst of a lockdown that could extend towards October while Melbourne is currently in its sixth since last March. Brisbane was also recently locked down as state governments try to quash outbreaks due to the country’s slow vaccine rollout which has currently only covered about 20% of the population. There is hope that by November or December that could be pushing 70%, which may remove the need for lockdowns and some quarantine requirements, although plenty of targets have already been missed. Currently, international borders are not expected to open in any meaningful way until the middle of 2022.The likes of Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins would not have played any long-form cricket before the Ashes•Getty ImagesDidn’t the India tour get away okay last year?It did, but it was a tense lead-in before the squad arrived. The New South Wales government came in at the last minute to offer the quarantine arrangements after Queensland backed out to leave the tour under threat. And, as with the Ashes, there was also tension over the ability of family members to travel. In the end the government granted a number of places for them but it was very last-minute and this year there may not be the ability to wait that long for an answer. England want clarity on the situation before the end of their home season. The final two Tests against India were also effectively played under quarantine to enable the final match to take place in Brisbane due to a Covid outbreak in Sydney, although limited crowds were still allowed. However, it is the success of last season, where they were able to keep the series on schedule, that leaves Cricket Australia confident they can do it again. What’s the Australian team’s situation around the Ashes?Although they are the home side, it’s certainly not without challenges. The players involved in the T20 World Cup will have to quarantine for a fortnight when they get home which if they go deep in the competition (leaving aside debate around their T20 pedigree) overlaps with the start of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Hobart. It means the likes of David Warner, Steven Smith, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood would not have played any long-form cricket before facing England. What has been said so farThere have been calls from some of the louder voices for the tour to be scrapped while two former England captains, Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss, have agreed that the families have to be able to travel. Late last month, Cricket Australia said that planning was continuing. “With the Ashes four months away, we are currently planning the operational requirements of this tour and working with the ECB on the proposed make-up of the England touring party. As was the case last season, CA will work constructively and in partnership with government to deliver the summer of cricket, while ensuring the health, wellbeing and safety of the community.”

Club’s local media expect big development as Celtic plot deal for £8m gem

As they continue their unbeaten start on the pitch, Celtic have reportedly started plotting a move to seal a future star after sending their chief scout to watch him in action recently.

Celtic transfer news

How the Bhoys go about improving their current side is a difficult but positive conundrum to crack thanks to their flawless start to the current campaign. Even in the Champions League, the Bhoys remained unfazed, smashing Slovan Bratislava 5-1 to open their European season in style.

Meanwhile, in the Scottish Premiership, the champions remain on course to retain after creating a five-point gap on Old Firm rivals Rangers and instead going head-to-head with new challengers Aberdeen.

With that said, the focus for Celtic should be on the future and ensuring that they only extend their dominance rather than eventually lose out to those around Scotland. And if recent rumours are anything to go by, they intend to do exactly that in the January transfer window.

According to Fotbolldirekt – a media outlet based in Sweden – via Sport Witness, Celtic are beginning to plot a move to sign Bazoumana Toure from Hammarby IF.

The media there expect a big development to take place soon with Celtic positioning themselves to sign the 18-year-old winger after sending chief scout Joe Lefevre to watch him in action.

Given that Eintracht Frankfurt, Crystal Palace, Bayer Leverkusen and Benfica are all also reportedly interested in Toure, Celtic will undoubtedly have to act fast if they want to secure his signature in a deal that would have to meet Hammerby’s reported €10m (£8m) price tag. A player with plenty of potential, Toure would be joining the Scottish champions at the perfect time, as they go for yet another title.

"Superb" Toure is one for the future

At 18 years old, Toure is already making his mark at Hammerby, with six goals and three assists in just 16 appearances last season. It’s no real surprise that he has attracted such high interest from all around Europe and the Bhoys will simply be hoping to see their sales pitch convince the youngster that Celtic Park is the place to be.

Earning plenty of praise during his recent rise, Toure was dubbed “superb” by Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig.

What is interesting to note is that he can also play on both wings to hand Brendan Rodgers a versatile option within his frontline, should Celtic complete their move in 2025. With years to reach his best form too, the Ivory Coast youngster could quickly turn into an excellent coup.

Bad news for Palma: Celtic have interest in "flamboyant" £6m-rated star

Celtic went into the international break off the back of a 2-1 win away from Parkhead against Ross County in Dingwall in the Scottish Premiership.

The Hoops have won all seven of their games in the top-flight so far this season, and the penalty they conceded on Sunday was the first goal they had let in in the division.

Brendan Rodgers will now be hoping that the players who have jetted off to play for their respective countries come back without any injury issues and full of confidence.

Meanwhile, the group of stars who did not go away on international duty went over to Ireland to take on Sligo Rovers in a friendly earlier this week.

Scott Bain, Maik Nawrocki, Stephen Welsh, Alex Valle, Luis Palma, Luke McCowan, and Hyun-jun Yang all started for the Hoops, alongside youngsters like Francis Turley and Lewis Dobbie.

Palma was the star of the show for the Scottish giants with a hat-trick in a 3-2 win, with two of his goals coming in stoppage time with the score at 2-2 heading into the final minutes.

This week may have also brought some bad news for the Honduras international, though, as the club are reportedly eyeing another winger…

Celtic's interest in Chile international

According to The Boot Room, Rodgers has a Celtic interest in Dario Osorio and that the Scottish giants ‘admire’ the FC Midtjylland wide player.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report claims that the Hoops and Scottish Premiership rivals Rangers are both interested in the 20-year-old talent, but they are far from the only suitors.

It states that Aston Villa, Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Newcastle United have also been keeping tabs on the Chile international.

His form at international level and in the Danish top-flight for Midtjylland has seemingly attracted the attention of clubs across Europe, with The Boot Room adding that teams in Spain and France are keen on the impressive youngster.

This means that Celtic would likely face plenty of competition from a host of clubs if they decided to make a swoop for the versatile winger in the January transfer window.

The outlet does not, though, reveal how much money his current team would demand if any team were to make a move for him at the start of next year.

Irrespective of whether or not a transfer to Parkhead is currently viable or not, the news that the club are looking at potentially signing another winger should come as bad news to Palma, who is looking to break into the starting XI.

Luis Palma's Celtic struggles

Rodgers swooped to sign the forward from Greek side Aris for a reported fee of £3.5m and the attacker enjoyed a terrific start to life in Glasgow.

The Hoops sensation recorded an impressive return of five goals and nine assists in his first 16 games in the Premiership for the Scottish giants in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign, which suggested that he was on course to be the club’s new Jota – who had left to join Al-Ittihad a few months prior.

2024, however, has not been a kind year for Palma in the league. He racked up just two goals and zero assists in 12 appearances in the Premiership during the second half of last term.

Celtic stars Matt O'Riley and Luis Palma.

He has only featured twice in the division so far this season, both times as a substitute, and is yet to record a goal or an assist for the champions.

This means that the 24-year-old attacker has only been directly involved in two goals in 14 league appearances in the Premiership since the start of the year, which is a relatively poor return when you consider his initial start to life in Scotland.

The former Aris star, who has been an unused substitute in both Champions League games so far, still has over two months to go before the January transfer window to force his way back into the starting XI, ahead of Daizen Maeda or Nicolas Kuhn, but it does not look likely on current form.

His friendly hat-trick against Sligo Rovers does, at least, show that he is motivated to perform and still fight it out for his Celtic career, which will be pleasing for Rodgers, but the club’s interest in Osorio will still be bad news for the forward.

Why Celtic's interest in Osorio is bad news for Palma

The Hoops wanting to bring another flanker to the squad, particularly one who has spent the majority of his career playing down the left side, will not be music to Palma’s ears.

Firstly, their interest in Osorio suggests that they are not currently happy with the quality or depth of their options on the wing, with Yang and Palma currently being the back-up options to Maeda and Kuhn.

Secondly, the arrival of another player in his position would see the Honduras international’s chances limited even further, which could make it harder for him to break back into the starting XI.

Osorio has started the current season with one goal and two ‘big chances’ created in five appearances in the Superliga, along with 2.1 completed dribbles per game.

The 20-year-old starlet, who was described as a “flamboyant” player by talent scout Jacek Kulig, also caught the eye with his performances for the Danish side last term.

As you can see in the table above, Osorio produced eight goals and four ‘big chances’ created in just 15 starts, without missing a single ‘big chance’ in front of goal.

This suggests that the Chile international, who is valued at €7m (£6m) by Transfermarkt, can provide quality as a scorer and a creator of goals from the left flank, at least in the Danish league.

Whilst it remains to be seen whether or not he can translate his strong form over to Scotland, Celtic’s interest alone is enough to be of concern to Palma, who may have to consider his future at Parkhead if they bring in another player in his position when he is already behind Maeda in the pecking order.

Major concerns at Lennoxtown about injury to Celtic ace before St Johnstone

A major injury concern has emerged at Celtic regarding a “terrific” player, prior to this weekend’s Scottish Premiership clash with St Johnstone.

Latest Celtic news

The Hoops are looking to keep up their 100% winning start to the league season this weekend, making the trip to St Johnstone on Saturday evening. Brendan Rodgers’ side will once again be favourites to prevail, and they have a great chance to open up an eight-point lead over Rangers, prior to their home meeting with Hibernian on Sunday. It would heap further pressure on their biggest title rivals, who know their further dropped points could be fatal even this early in the season.

Meanwhile, exciting Celtic transfer news continues to emerge, with 18-year-old Hammarby starlet Bazoumana Toure linked with a move to Parkhead in a potential £8m transfer. Capable of thriving on both wings, the teenager has already made 16 appearances at senior level for his current club, and even more impressive is that he has registered six goals and three assists in that time.

While there is plenty to be positive about at Parkhead currently, Rodgers has now suffered a potentially big blow after a fresh injury update dropped.

Celtic dealt injury blow to "terrific" hero

According to a fresh update from Football Scotland, Cameron Carter-Vickers missed Celtic training at Lennoxtown on Friday before the St Johnstone game, throwing his involvement in the match into serious doubt. Brendan Rodgers confirmed he had picked up an injury after he missed the win against Falkirk last week and the worst may yet be to come.

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers

Not having Carter-Vickers available immediately weakens Celtic, considering what an impressive performer he has been at the heart of the defence for so long, featuring in every minute in the Scottish Premiership this season, winning an average of 3.4 aerial duels per game.

Former Hoops ace Jackie McNamara has heaped praise on the USA international “Carter-Vickers is strong and has a lot of attributes. He’s been a terrific signing. Yeah, he’s up there with some of the best – although he’s not quite the same kind of player as Bobo! I played with some cracking centre-backs over the years – Johan Mjallby, Mark Rieper, and so on. Carter-Vickers has definitely been one who has been an excellent signing. He’s very steady and consistent.”

While Celtic could easily get by without Carter-Vickers for a short period, suddenly having him unavailable for a lengthy spell of action could threaten to derail their season, especially in the Champions League.

Worth more than Engels: Celtic star has seen his value rise 500% since exit

The 26-year-old has suffered injury problems in the past, not least undergoing knee surgery last year, so this will be a concerning update for Rodgers and anyone of a Hoops persuasion. The fact that the club are keeping things close to their chest arguably makes it more of a worry, too, so fans must wait with bated breath in the hope of good news.

Nathan Gilchrist helps Kent roll Derbyshire for big win

Kent completed a hat-trick of LV=Insurance County Championship victories when they beat Derbyshire by 130 runs in the Division Three match at Derby. After Kent declared on 211 for 2, setting Derbyshire an unlikely 341 for victory, the home side were bowled out for 210.Nathan Gilchrist took 4 for 30 after Grant Stewart claimed the first two wickets to start another feeble Derbyshire collapse.Only an eighth-wicket stand of 70 between Anuj Dal, who was 58 not out, and Ben Aitchison, with 36, spared Derbyshire from complete humiliation.Kent batted on for nine overs in the morning, adding 64 with Jordan Cox falling for 81 attempting a big shot against Matt Critchley.Daniel Bell-Drummond dispatched Critchley for six on his way to an unbeaten 51 and the declaration set Derbyshire a target that was purely notional given their batting woes this season.A more realistic target was to bat out the day but once again, the top order crumbled and by lunch, Derbyshire were facing defeat.Harry Came was the first to go when he followed one from Stewart that moved away and Leus du Plooy bagged a pair when he was pinned in front first ball by a full delivery.Billy Godleman denied Stewart a hat-trick but after a brief recovery, two more wickets fell before the interval.Wayne Madsen played across a swinging delivery from Harry Podmore and was lbw for 13 and although he passed 6,000 first-class runs for Derbyshire, Godleman followed him to the pavilion in the next over. The Derbyshire captain miscued a pull at Nathan Gilchrist and was caught at square leg for 27 to leave his side in disarray on 67 for 4 at the interval. It was now just a question of how long Derbyshire could delay Kent but the visitors were soon back in business.Tom Wood lost his off stump as he played forward to Jas Singh and Gilchrist claimed his second wicket in the next over when Critchley edged to second slip.Gilchrist found late movement to have Brooke Guest caught behind but Dal and Aitchison finally offered some resistance along with a few muscular blows before the latter miscued to mid off.Sam Conners, batting with a runner after turning an ankle, helped Dal take the game to tea but Gilchrist sealed victory with the fifth ball of the final session.

Lizelle Lee's unbeaten 91 puts South Africa 1-0 up

South Africa’s disciplined bowling performance helped bowl West Indies out for 153

Lizelle Lee hit 10 fours and a six in her 91•CWI

Opening batter Lizelle Lee continued her fine run of form with an unbeaten 91 to help South Africa cruise to a comfortable eight-wicket win with more than 10 overs to spare against West Indies in the opening women’s ODI in Coolidge.Chasing 154 for victory, Lee and Laura Wolvaardt (36 off 65 balls) put on an 88-run opening partnership to put South Africa on course. Even though West Indies picked up two wickets in the space of nine balls, Lee and captain Dane van Niekerk (17* off 40 balls) managed the rest of the chase expertly with an unbeaten 68-run stand for the third wicket. Lee hit 10 fours and a six en route to her 91, which marked her 21st ODI half-century. She had come into the ODIs on the back of a strong T20I series in which she scored 114 runs in three matches.A disciplined bowling performance from the outset from South Africa’s bowlers set the tone for the match. South Africa picked up two wickets in the first 10 overs and conceded just 12 runs before Deandra Dottin and Britney Cooper salvaged the innings with a 58-run partnership. After Dottin was dismissed for a quickfire 38, off 36 balls, West Indies were unable to put together substantial partnerships. Wicketkeeper Kycia Knight top-scored for the hosts with a patient 39. Three bowlers – Ayabonga Khaka, van Niekerk and Tumi Sekhukhune – picked up two wickets apiece to help bowl West Indies out for 153 in the 47th over.”It was really hot today and a little bit difficult and you had to dig deep,” Dottin said after the match. “We didn’t play our best today with our batting. I just think that the top order, at least one should have batted through, we were short of partnerships as well. We need to go back to the drawing board and come up with ways to score 200 which I know we have the ability to do.”

Arteta must finally axe Arsenal star who earns more than Saka & Saliba

Arsenal have gone from strength to strength over the past several years, and though Mikel Arteta has not added to the FA Cup trophy he clinched in his first full term with the Gunners – a season he joined in December – the progress has been astounding.

The past two seasons in the Premier League have ended in late-stage misery as the Manchester City machine churns on, collecting its fourth successive league title in May, but there’s growing optimism around north London that this could be the year.

While injury should never be wished upon a professional athlete, the season-ending blow suffered by Rodri last month does open up a new world of possibility for competitors like Arsenal and Liverpool. He’s that good, and his absence will be felt keenly.

Of course, Arsenal haven’t fallen that far short in recent years, and with a youthful crop now blooming into world-class quality, it’s starting to feel like it might, maybe, be the year.

Arsenal's new generation

Arteta, still only 42, is probably the finest young manager in the world at the moment, but just like his Arsenal team, in its sixth season with the Spaniard at the helm, he’s maturing.

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka

The likes of Bukayo Saka and William Saliba, two of the finest players in the world in their respective positions, are both now 23 but have spent recent years developing their nascent ability and directing it toward something that is capable of dethroning the all-conquering machine that is Man City.

Saka, for example, has produced breathtaking results across the opening months of the 2024/25 term, posting three goals and seven assists across ten matches in all competitions. Saliba, meanwhile, continues to rival Virgil van Dijk as the finest centre-back in English football, exceptionally winning 71% of his ground duels in the Premier League so far, as per Sofascore.

As you can see, Arsenal’s average age in the top flight has been creeping upward over the past four seasons, which is principally down to the fine balance that Arteta has crafted. A core clutch, including Saka and Saliba, have started to float away from youthful potential and into the conversation for the best players that Europe has to offer. They are high and central in such debates, in fact.

Arsenal are on the up indeed. But there’s still progress to be had. Every department of Arteta’s squad is packed with quality, but one player who must be ditched in 2025 has got to be Thomas Partey, with the Ghana international failing to live up to the lofty price tag.

The 31-year-old is part of the reason that the Emirates side’s average age has bobbed up, and while this isn’t a flaw in itself, it’s indicative of the midfielder’s dwindling performance level that doesn’t justify the financials.

Thomas Partey's Arsenal career in numbers

It was October 2020, and Arsenal purchased Partey from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid after activating the player’s £45m release clause. He’s since chalked up 124 appearances, having been frequently disrupted by injuries, albeit enjoying a renaissance this year, starting all seven Premier League matches so far.

Thomas Partey

For a player who was supposed to revolutionise the centre of the park, he’s failed to live up to the price tag and the expectations. Despite this, of course, the Gunners have skyrocketed toward elite status on the continent, but as Arterta’s influence has waxed, so too has the dynamo’s role been diminished.

At his best, the occasional defender brings strength and steel to the team, with an imposing physicality that still, to this day, Arsenal don’t have in surplus. Declan Rice is an elite athletic, sweeping up, controlling, driving – a regular force of nature. He’s not, however, a ‘defensive’ midfielder, and needs a partner like Partey to hit the height of his skill.

But alas, Arsenal must turn their gaze elsewhere, for Partey is entering the twilit stage of his career in the English capital.

Why Arteta must axe Thomas Partey

This is a case of ‘what if?’ since Partey is clearly an exceptional talent. The sticking point loops back to his injury record, precluding his chances of reaching his zenith.

Football.london suggested before the summer transfer window that Partey would be one of the players that sporting director Edu and Arteta would seek to ship on, looking to claim some cashback before his contract expires, as it is due to at the end of the season.

Injuries have foiled much of the fluency that Partey’s natural skillset suggests can be offered, but for such a lofty price tag and the weight of expectation that followed the Ghanaian from Atletico Madrid, there’s a rueful tinge to the whole thing for sure.

Ah, and that’s without even addressing the salary situation. As you can see above, Partey is one of Arsenal’s highest earners, pocketing £200k-per-week.

Partey has played a part for Arsenal over the years and can’t quite be branded a flop, but he’s hardly proving himself to be a man whose contract is worth renewing – and given that he’s taking home more than superstars Saka and Saliba, it’s probably time to go.

Given the direction that Arsenal are heading in, it’s only right that Partey is cut loose in 2025. He’s played a part but Arteta is looking to craft a team that is capable of competing and winning the biggest prizes in football.

Expect attention to the midfield next year, with an exciting upgrade made on Partey, partnering Rice and pushing the club ever closer to the top position on the continent.
