Warner: Langer's contract offer a kick in the face

However he added that the former coach lost ‘a fair few players’ during his tenure

AAP10-Jan-2023David Warner claims Cricket Australia’s decision to only offer Justin Langer a six-month contract was a “kick in the face”, while admitting the coach lost several key players in the team. The build up to and fallout of Langer’s exit as coach last year is a key focus of the second season of documentary, which will be released on Friday on Prime Video.Langer’s departure at the end of last summer came after Cricket Australia took on board concerns over the coach’s intensity at the end of his initial four-year deal. He was offered a new six-month contract with no chance of an extension, which he promptly rejected and resigned.Langer has since made clear his frustration over the situation, speaking out in several interviews and columns before the start of the Test summer.Related

Warner’s comments come after after Tim Paine also labelled the short contract “embarrassing”, “unprofessional” and “a disgrace” in his autobiography, claiming CA took the easy way out knowing Langer would not accept it.”He wanted to keep coaching. It was a bit of a kick in the face to offer him a six-month contract,” Warner said in the documentary.Regardless, Warner also laid bare the situation within the squad. “He lost a fair few players, and probably the wrong players,” he said. The documentary shows the players speaking candidly on the Langer issue, with captain Pat Cummins telling AAP this week he is hopeful it can provide context and take some of the heat out of any lingering public anger over the matter. In the first episode of the series, Cummins says players were walking on eggshells around the coach, while Usman Khawaja reveals others were afraid of Langer.Nathan Lyon admits he struggled with Langer’s up-and-down nature, with the former Test opener known for riding every ball.Players, however, also make clear Langer’s significant influence in the rebuild from the ball-tampering scandal and the revival of the national team’s public image. But, Cummins is adamant the decision to move on from Langer should not have come as a shock.”The Ashes, it all came to a head because his contract came up,” Cummins told viewers. “There was nothing out of the blue. We had spoken about a lot of these things over the previous 18 months to two years He was brilliant when we needed him in those initial years.”Cummins and other players reasoned the team had wanted to create a more level player-driven environment after the 2020-21 home series loss to India.”The team had changed a lot over a four-year period,” quick Josh Hazlewood said.  “We were probably in need of a different support staff and different coach, as opposed to four years ago when JL started.”

Arteta must unleash Arsenal’s answer to Kudus in "unplayable" game-changer

This season has been nothing short of a roller coaster for Arsenal fans.

Mikel Arteta’s side have been inconsistent on the pitch and incredibly unlucky with injuries off of it.

However, the last seven days might just have been the start of a good period for the side, with Mikel Merino stepping up in the absence of a recognised number nine on Saturday and then the former manager doing his successor a favour by taking two points off Liverpool on Wednesday.

With that said, the Gunners have a tough test against Graham Potter’s West Ham to get past this afternoon if they are to keep up the pressure on Arne Slot’s Reds, and to ensure they do, Arteta must unleash one of his new stars who’s been compared to the Hammers’ Mohammed Kudus.

Arsenal's record against West Ham

Since their first meeting back in January 1909, when they were under the name Woolwich Arsenal, the Gunners have played West Ham 152 times across all competitions, winning 74, drawing 41 and losing 37.

jorginho-paqueta-zinchenko-arsenal-west-ham

However, while their overall record against the Hammers is pretty excellent, the North Londoners’ form against the Hammers over their last four encounters has been decidedly more mixed, with two wins, two losses and a draw.

Moreover, while their last two games against the East Londoners, which have both been away, have resulted in hefty wins for Arteta’s men, their last game at the Emirates was something of a disaster.

It was in late December 2023, and despite taking 30 shots to their six, having 74% of the possession and amassing an expected goals figure of 2.77 to their 1.42, the title challengers came away 2-0 losers, and it could have been even worse had David Raya not saved Saïd Benrahma’s 96th minute penalty.

So, it should be an exciting game this afternoon, and one of the players Arsenal have to be most aware of is undoubtedly Mohammed Kudus.

Still, the good news is Arteta already has his answer to the attacker, although he has to make sure he starts him.

Arsenal's answer to Kudus

The unfortunate truth of the matter is that, thanks to the mountain of attacking injuries Arsenal have at the moment, there really aren’t many options for Arteta to choose from for the right wing, meaning it’s likely to be another start for the incredible Ethan Nwaneri, who also happens to be the team’s answer to Kudus.

Now, there are a number of reasons why this is the case, but perhaps the most significant is that he’s been likened to the Hammers star by FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and, in this instance, has concluded that the Ghanaian is the second most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Englishman.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, non-penalty expected goals plus assists, shots on target, passes into the penalty area, blocks, ball recoveries and more, all per 90.

On top of their statistical similarities, both players have shown themselves to be positionally versatile, as while the young Hale Ender is currently thriving off the right, he’s also able to play in midfield, attacking midfield, and even up-top, akin to the Irons ace.

With all that said, another reason Arteta must start the “unplayable” teenager, as dubbed by Jack Wilshere, is exactly that: he’s becoming the sort of player defenders do not want to play against.

For example, despite playing just 790 minutes of first-team football across 24 appearances, the Enfield-born phenom has scored seven goals and provided one assist, which comes out to an unreal average of a goal involvement every three games, or every 98.75 minutes.

Ultimately, Arsenal must win this game to keep the pressure on Liverpool, and for them to stand the best chance of doing so, the manager needs to keep Nwaneri in the starting lineup.

£40k-p/w ace really wanted Leeds move in January, his club wouldn’t let him

One star really wanted to move to Leeds United this January, only for his club to slam the door on any potential move leaving him stranded until at least the summer, it has emerged.

Leeds United win again

Faced with familiar foe Frank Lampard, Leeds picked up another three points in their search for automatic promotion out of the Championship come the end of the season.

First half goals from Joel Piroe and Jayden Bogle proved the difference vs Coventry City to hand Daniel Farke’s side a win that moved them five points clear at the top of England’s second tier, although Sheffield United do have a game in hand on their Yorkshire rivals.

Despite having scored the most and conceded the second-fewest goals in the division, there was scope to strengthen their squad in January had the right deal emerged, with Farke himself admitting as much after the window when quizzed on why no deal could be struck.

“To find a loan option who is really improving your squad but willing to come, three months around and lots of competition, is very difficult,” he explained. “Other option is go for permanent transfer, we have also explored this, but the options in January are a bit overpriced and this makes the market so difficult, especially in a situation like we are – we don’t have a big problem. In the end, not all the boxes were ticked.”

However, one man was desperate to move to Leeds, only for his club to block any deal to let him leave.

Leeds fail with late move despite player buy-in

That player, of course, was European U21 Champion Cameron Archer, who was the subject of significant speculation in the days leading up to the transfer deadline day after Patrick Bamford suffered a hamstring injury setback.

It emerged that, even in the final hours of the window, Leeds were still pushing to try and seal a deal for the Southampton man, only for Ivan Juric’s side to refuse to entertain any offers for the former Aston Villa youngster, who is yet to start for the new Saints coach.

Now, transfer insider Graeme Bailey has revealed that Archer was more than ready to make the move to Elland Road, largely because the Whites are likely to get promoted while his Southampton side are already on the cusp of relegation with a third of the season left to play.

“Cameron Archer wanted the move, there is no doubting that – he wants to be in the Premier League next season and in the long-term”, Bailey explained. “No doubt he feels he would be better served at Leeds than Southampton.”

Though he has struggled in his early time in the Premier League, Archer possesses undoubted quality, with the forward scoring twice in England’s U21 success back in 2023, part of a team that included the likes of James Trafford, Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon.

But with three years left to run on his £40,000 a week deal at St Mary’s, an exit still looks difficult even if Southampton are relegated, with Leeds likely able to attract other players should the two sides swap places in the football pyramid.

Lionel Messi has appeared somewhat frustrated in Inter Miami's recent matches. Despite securing a 4-1 home victory against the NY Red Bulls – a match in which the Argentine star scored one of the goals – he previously seemed a bit frustrated with the team's three-game losing streak.

That run included their elimination in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup and a 4-3 loss to FC Dallas, which marked Miami's first defeat of the MLS season.

Ahead of Saturday's match against Minnesota United, Miami manager Javier Mascherano spoke about his captain's current mindset.

"Leo is a competitive beast – it’s normal," Mascherano said. "Those of us who’ve known him for a long time understand how demanding he is, not only with himself but also with those around him."

The Herons are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 21 points, and a win over Minnesota could put them back near the top of the standings.

Mascherano’s success since his arrival at Inter Miami has been mixed. In the 18 games he has managed, he has won 11, drawn three, and lost four. Three of those four losses came consecutively and included the team’s elimination in the semifinals of the Champions Cup against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

AFPWHAT JAVIER MASCHERANO SAID

The Argentine coach spoke about the possibility of strengthening the squad ahead of the Club World Cup.

"I think we need to focus on bringing in someone who truly strengthens us as a team. And yes, I’m exploring options," he said.

Mascherano pointed toward reinforcing The Herons' offense, saying "Well, to be more precise, the club is evaluating options – especially in the attacking front."

The Herons will visit Minnesota United in MLS. Mascherano spoke about the absences the team will face for the match, with Luis Suárez’s standing out.

“Drake [Callender] is injured, and the club will later provide an update on his condition. As for the others, Luis had to travel due to personal reasons, and everyone else – except for David Ruiz – is available for training. We’re still evaluating Baltasar [Rodríguez's] situation, as he’s coming back from an injury and we need to assess what’s best,” Mascherano explained.

Send him to Saudi: Arteta must sell Arsenal star who’s a "bit of a moaner"

While the last four or five years have seen Arsenal continuously improve under Mikel Arteta, this season has been a rude awakening.

While the Gunners finished in a close second place for the last two campaigns, they are already 13 points off Premier League leaders, Liverpool.

Injuries have undoubtedly played a significant part in the North Londoners’ poor form, but at the same time, the squad clearly isn’t good enough.

This summer represents a massive opportunity for the board to make the necessary investments to push the team over the line next season, but arguably just as important is shipping off those who aren’t up to scratch, including a regular starter who’s already been linked with a move to the Middle East.

The Arsenal players who need to be sold

Starting with an easy one here, as for a while there, it looked as if Oleksandr Zinchenko would be sold in the winter transfer window.

Borussia Dortmund were supposedly targeting the Ukrainian international, and while his quality on the ball and the impact he had on the team alongside Gabriel Jesus in the 22/23 season cannot be forgotten, it’s clear that he’s now surplus to requirements.

For example, he’s made just 15 appearances this season, with only four of those being starts, and with the emergence of Myles Lewis-Skelly, his importance is only going to further diminish, and as he’s on a whopping £150-per-week, it also makes financial sense to move him on.

Likewise, Polish international Jakub Kiwior has seen his already minor importance to the team fade even more this term, as his only appearances have come when Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba have been injured, ill or suspended.

Moreover, with Ben White now back to full fitness, Jurrien Timber continuing to impress, and Riccardo Calafiori in the squad, there are far more players who can do his job of filling in at centre-back and full-back, so it would make sense for his career and the club’s coffers if he was sold in the summer.

However, it’s not just in defence that players need to be moved on, as it might be time for one of the club’s main attacking outlets to leave in a few months.

Why it's time for Arsenal's £90k-per-week star to go

With Bukayo Saka being the world-class talent he is, Kai Havertz hitting 20 goal involvements this year, Gabriel Martinelli still possessing plenty of upside, and Jesus being out with a long-term injury, it should come as no surprise that Leandro Trossard is the forward Arsenal should sell in the summer.

Now, the first thing to say is that when the Belgian is at his incredible best, he can be near enough unplayable for opposition defenders, but therein lies the problem: he’s not been anywhere near his best this year.

For example, in his first six months with the club, the former Brighton & Hove Albion star racked up a brilliant haul of one goal and ten assists in 22 games, and then last year managed to rack up a tally of 17 goals and two assists in 46 appearances.

However, instead of going one better this season, or even just maintaining his level of output, the Waterschei-born winger, who Arteta described as “a little bit of a moaner,” has regressed.

In his 39 appearances across all competitions this year, the usually reliable attacker has only been able to muster up five goals and seven assists, which comes out to a goal involvement every 3.25 games, compared to one every 2.42 games last season and every other game in his first half-campaign.

In short, the 41-capped international is not as dangerous as he once was, and considering he’ll be 31 at the end of this year and his £90k-per-week contract expires next summer, the club must cash in on him in the next transfer window.

The good news is that there does seem to be interest in him from the uber-wealthy Saudi Pro League, as reports from September revealed that the North Londoners turned down an offer from Al-Ittihad.

Ultimately, Trossard has been a useful player for Arsenal, but this season has seen his effectiveness dwindle, and unless Arteta and Co want him to leave for nothing next year or continue to underwhelm next season, they should be looking to sell him as soon as possible.

Lennon Miller: Why Motherwell record-breaker is one of the most-wanted teenagers in Europe as Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund & Celtic all circle

The Scottish youngster has enjoyed a superb season at Fir Park, and could be in line for a dream summer move

"I'm confident in my own ability. I'm obviously not going to go in and be the best player there, but I believe that I could maybe in a couple of months be the best player there," Lennon Miller said after being called up to the Scotland senior squad for the first time in March. "I think that's how you need to think as a football player – you need to want to be the best."

Those words have been construed as disrespectful by some, given Scotland are captained by two-time Premier League winner Andy Robertson, and can also call upon former Manchester United midfielder-turned-Napoli talisman Scott McTominay. But anyone who has watched Lennon closely at Motherwell this season will understand where his arrogant streak comes from.

Indeed, the 18-year-old has been so impressive for the Scottish Premiership club that he is now one of the most sought-after teenagers in European football, with Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund and Celtic among those to have been credited with an interest in his services. Motherwell face an uphill battle to keep hold of their prized academy graduate, who is likely to have his pick from top clubs across the continent when the transfer market reopens.

It certainly feels like Miller has already outgrown Motherwell, which is remarkable given his age. The question is, how far can he go? GOAL assesses the full scope of Miller's potential below…

  • Where it all began

Born in the Scottish town of Wishaw in August 2006, Miller has always had football in his blood. That's because he is the son of former Middlesbrough and Aberdeen striker Lee Miller, who won three caps for Scotland and also enjoyed spells at Carlisle, Scunthorpe, Dundee, and Falkirk.

At just seven years old, Lennon was drafted into Motherwell's youth ranks, and quickly established himself as one of the club's most promising young players. He went on to follow in the footsteps of ex-Motherwell and Celtic star David Turnbull by attending Coltness High School, and broke into the Scotland Under-16s set up at 14.

Miller's first appearance in the iconic dark blue jersey was an unforgettable one, too, as he scored from inside his own half during a 3-2 defeat to England. The ball was rolled back to him straight from kick-off, and he showed incredible technique to lob the Three Lions goalkeeper with a first-time effort that left all the parents and coaches watching on in awe.

Among them was Campbell Rae, Miller's PE teacher at Coltness High. "Everyone is absolutely delighted for Lennon. From all the players we’ve had come through here, he has the potential to be the best we’ve ever seen," Rae declared after the game. "He stands out more than David [Turnbull] did at this age."

Meanwhile, Miller's father Lee said to : "To have the audacity to actually try it and execute it is ridiculous. He’s got it in his locker and he’s got that wee cutting edge."

  • The big break

Six days after his 16th birthday, Miller was handed his senior debut for Motherwell. He came off the bench in their 4-0 Scottish League Cup victory over Inverness in August 2022, becoming the youngest player to feature in a major competition for the Steelmen in their entire 136-year history.

"If the rule wasn’t in place, Lennon would have played when he was 15," then-Motherwell boss Steven Hammell claimed after the win. "It’s not a token gesture to give him a game, it’s because he’s a good footballer. He’s super-talented and he works very hard.

Miller then became a regular in Hammell's matchday squads, and made his bow in the Scottish Premiership at the end of December 2022, catching the eye in a 28-minute cameo as Motherwell suffered a 3-0 loss to Rangers.

Miller would finish the campaign with five senior appearances as he also endeared himself to Stuart Kettlewell, who replaced Hammell as manager in February 2023. Kettlewell even trusted the talented youngster to start Motherwell's first seven Premiership games of the 2023-24 campaign, and he scored his first goal for the club in a League Cup group-stage win over Elgin City.

But then came the first proper challenge of Miller's fledgling career. He was sent off in a 2-0 defeat at Livingston, and fractured his patella in his first game back against Aberdeen, which was expected to keep him out of action for at least three months.

Despite that setback, Motherwell tied Miller to a contract extension until 2026 two weeks later, and gave him all the help he needed to get back to full fitness. The midfielder showed real character to return ahead of schedule in a 1-1 draw against St Johnstone on January 27 before going on to finish the season strongly, most notably putting in a stellar display as Motherwell beat Rangers 2-1 to record their first league win at Ibrox since 1997.

  • Getty Images

    How it's going

After racking up 32 appearances in all competitions in his breakthrough campaign at Motherwell, Miller was rewarded with his first cap for Scotland's U21s as he lined up in a friendly clash against Turkey last June. The midfielder then returned to Fir Park full of confidence, which shone through as he helped the Steelmen open their 2024-25 Premiership campaign with four wins, one draw and just two defeats.

Miller scored twice in the 2-1 win against St Mirren and also converted the penalty that sent Motherwell through to the League Cup semi-finals at Dundee's expense, which earned him public praise from Kettlewell. "It's pretty special when you're looking at an 18-year-old who shows that level of composure, that belief and trust in himself, that he can convert a penalty kick the way he did," said the Scottish coach. "I go back to the bigger picture and speak about his performance in general, which I think leads to that, but nothing really surprises me with him."

With each passing game, Miller's influence was growing, and he made more history in November. With Paul McGinn and Stephen O'Donnell both out injured, Kettlewell named Miller captain for the League Cup semi-final against Rangers at Hampden Park. As Motherwell's youngest-ever skipper, Miller helped Motherwell take the lead on his first outing at the national stadium, though Rangers ultimately came back to book a final clash against Celtic.

Miller retained the armband in each of Motherwell's next nine league games, but limped off with an ankle injury in a 2-2 draw against Rangers on December 29. That issue kept him sidelined until mid-February, by which time Michael Wimmer had been appointed new Motherwell boss after Kettleman's resignation.

That change didn't adversely affect Miller, though, because Wimmer "saw his quality and work ethic early on". The German tactician added after Miller was named in Steve Clarke's Scotland squad a month late: "He's a brilliant player and a great talent. He would be ready to start for Scotland."

Miller was not given any minutes in the Nations League double-header against Greece, but it was still a huge step in his development, and crucially, Clarke came out to defend him for his controversial "best player there" remarks.

"He wants to be the best, what's wrong with that? He's a young boy who wants to improve," Clarke said. Miller has certainly continued to improve at club level since then, making headlines for his all-action performances despite Motherwell only winning four of their last 14 Premiership games.

    Biggest strengths

Miller is a deep-lying midfielder capable of dictating the pace of his games with his passing, and he reads the game brilliantly. The Motherwell star can also operate as No.10, but prefers sitting in front of the defence where he can constantly get on the ball and try to break through the lines.

Press-resistant midfielders are perhaps the most highly valued players in the modern game, and Miller is already an accomplished one. He knows instinctively when to play quick passes or when to drive into space himself, possessing the strong physical frame to brush past defenders with ease.

Miller wouldn't look out of place in the Spanish national team, that's how polished his technical skills are. He's also remarkably composed for an 18-year-old and has proven himself as a natural leader at Motherwell, which is partly why he has been named the Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year for the 2024-25 campaign.

Celtic now ready to cash in on forward this summer for massive 660% profit

Celtic could now be set to net a massive profit this summer after it emerged that they were willing to cash in on one of their stars ahead of the new season, according to a fresh report.

Celtic on course for treble

Brendan Rodgers and his side are on course for a clean sweep of trophies in Scotland this season. They have already clinched the Scottish League Cup after beating Rangers in the final via a penalty shoot out.

They also lead Rangers in the Scottish Premiership by a mammoth 13 points with just a quarter of the campaign left to play thanks to a dreadful start to the season from their traditional title rivals.

Celtic have signed some excellent value-for-money players over the years, but it’s hard to believe their current “best player” cost just £1.5m in 2022

The Bhoys have lost just once all season, that coming against Rangers, while they also boast both the best attack and the best defence in the competition, having scored more than 20 more goals than any other side.

Celtic’s path to Scottish Cup success has also been made easier by Rangers’ shock exit from the competition at the hands of second tier outfit Queen’s Park, leaving Rodgers’ side as overwhelming favourites to lift the trophy come the end of the season after they eased past Raith Rovers.

In fact, the only blot (if it can be called such) on Celtic’s copybook this season is likely to come in Europe, where they look set to crash out of the Champions League at the last 32 stage after falling to a 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich at Celtic Park in the first leg of their clash.

Their form has not gone unnoticed, and now Celtic could be set to net a massive profit on one of their top performers this summer amid interest from south of the border.

Celtic ready to cash in on forward

That comes according to a report from The Daily Record, which relays claims from The Daily Mail that Newcastle have sent scouts on several occasions to watch impressive right-winger Nicolas Kuhn this year, most recently in the defeat to Bayern Munich.

Kuhn had an early goal against the Germans ruled out for offside, and was lively all evening against Vincent Kompany’s side, something Newcastle’s scouts will undoubtedly have approved of.

So far this season, Kuhn has managed 10 goals and six assists in 20 Scottish Premiership outings, as well as netting twice in the Champions League and five times in the Scottish League Cup.

And that form has seen clubs circle as they eye a move, with Newcastle thought to be chief among the suitors. The report claims that the Magpies are massive admirers, and that “this summer could see Celtic reluctantly cash in on Kuhn” but only if they receive a fee of £20m or more.

Having signed for £3m from Austrian side Rapid Vienna, such a move would see Celtic make a massive profit (£17m or 660%) on their winger, which they could then reinvest back into the squad. Is it a move they should be looking to do?
