Bangladesh have brought back Sharmin Akhter into the ODI squad for the three-match series against India, which gets underway on July 16 in Dhaka. The other inclusions in the 17-member squad were of Shorna Akter, Marufa Akter and Salma Khatun, a veteran of 46 ODIs. The trio were part of the three-match T20I series, which Bangladesh lost by a 2-1 margin. Salma only played the opening game, while Marufa and Shorna were picked for all three outings. Sharmin, meanwhile last played international cricket during Bangladesh’s tour to New Zealand in December 2022.Shorna, who is yet to make her ODI debut, scored an unbeaten run-a-ball 28 in the first T20I against India but failed to get going in the second and third games. Marufa, who has played three ODIs but is yet to take a wicket, was mostly economical in her bowling efforts on spin-friendly tracks. There was no place for fast bowlers Jahanara Alam and Fariha Trisna, as well as wicketkeeper-batter Rubya Haider. Jahanara continues to be overlooked and the reasons continue to remain unclear. She has an economy rate of 4.26 in ODIs and has picked up 48 wickets in 52 games. The ODIs between Bangladesh and India will be played on July 16, 19 and 22 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, the same venue as the three T20Is.Bangladesh squad: Nigar Sultana (capt & wk), Nahida Akter (vice-capt), Murshida Khatun, Fargana Hoque, Sobhana Mostary, Shorna Akter, Ritu Moni, Lata Mondal, Disha Biswas, Marufa Akter, Sharmin Akhter, Sanjida Akter, Rabeya Khan, Sultana Khatun, Salma Khatun, Fahima Khatun, Shamima Sultana

Amorim can fix Heaven blow by unleashing Man Utd's "commanding" 17-year-old

It has been the story of Manchester United in recent seasons, with Ruben Amorim having been dealt a similar hand to his predecessor, Erik ten Hag, with regard to injuries.

Upon arriving at Old Trafford, for instance, the Portuguese coach singled out Mason Mount as a player who he was particularly looking forward to working with, praising the Englishman as a “proper footballer”. As fate would have it, the former Chelsea man was forced off just minutes into December’s Manchester Derby.

Only last month, after registering 11 goals and assists in just 20 games under the new regime, it was revealed that Amad Diallo would most likely be out for the season with an ankle ligament injury, with that setback following on from having not signed a new forward player in January.

Setbacks have continued since then, with Harry Maguire having notably been absent since the FA Cup clash with Fulham, although the latest cruel blow came in Sunday’s comfortable 3-0 win away at Leicester City, with teen sensation, Ayden Heaven, forced off early in the second half.

The latest on Ayden Heaven's injury

Having signed somewhat under the radar back in January, the ex-Arsenal starlet was surprisingly announced as a first-team signing upon his arrival in Manchester, despite having only made a solitary, ten-minute cameo for his former side at senior level.

Eyebrows were raised by the decision to parachute the 18-year-old straight into Amorim’s ranks, although that move has swiftly been vindicated, with Heaven’s £1.5m acquisition already representing a real bargain.

Having put in solid displays off the bench against both Fulham and the Gunners, the teenager subsequently sparkled on his first start for United against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, with journalist Samuel Luckhurst noting that he ‘looked a veteran’ up against the Basque side.

The youngster also started in commanding fashion against the Foxes, having produced a particularly vital tackle on Patson Daka in the first half, albeit before going down inside his own area after tangling with that man Daka just after the break.

The England youth international immediately signalled his discomfort to the United bench, before being stretchered off on the 51st minute mark, with academy graduate Toby Collyer entering the fray in his place.

The full extent of the injury has yet to be revealed, although there were encouraging signs amid reports that Heaven was able to walk after the game, albeit with his foot in a brace.

Whatever the case, it sadly looks unlikely that the teen revelation will be featuring again any time soon, leaving Amorim with a decision to make over how to replace him.

The Obvious Options Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Noussair Mazraoui

Leny Yoro

Provided they can return from their own injury woes following the international break, the likely decision would be to re-introduce Leny Yoro and the aforementioned Maguire into the centre of defence, alongside potential future captain, Matthijs de Ligt.

The Red Devils do also have Victor Lindelof – who started against Leicester – to call upon, although the long-serving Swede looked shaky on Sunday, notably getting involved with what could have been a potentially costly mix-up with Andre Onana at one stage.

Amorim could also replicate the plan that he implemented at the weekend, amid the loss of Heaven, with summer signing Noussair Mazraoui comfortably slotting into a centre-back role, having started the evening at right wing-back.

That could well be the ideal solution considering Patrick Dorgu can now return from his three-game suspension, ensuring the young Dane can slot in at left-wing back, with Diogo Dalot on the opposite side.

That said, Mazraoui – who teed up Bruno Fernandes for a late chance against the Gunners – was excellent in that 1-1 draw at Old Trafford two weeks ago, when operating as a wing-back, ensuring it could instead be a straight fight between the Moroccan and Dalot on that right flank.

The Tactical Tweak Casemiro

It might be a bizarre pick, yet with Manuel Ugarte having made his return from injury at the weekend, it could be worth experimenting with Casemiro as part of the back three.

The veteran Brazilian has enjoyed a positive few weeks amid his encouraging displays in both legs against Sociedad, and in the draw with Mikel Arteta’s side, with Amorim revealing that he is now “learning how to use” the 33-year-old in his 3-4-3 set-up.

Dorgu, Fernandes, Casemiro

With the mobility of midfield “machine” Ugarte – as hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig – likely to be favoured moving forward, however, alongside Fernandes, Casemiro could put his ball-winning abilities to good use in the defensive trio instead.

The former Real Madrid man did lineup at centre-back under Ten Hag last season, amid the club’s injury crisis, with his aerial presence a real asset in both boxes, as shown by the fact that he has won 67% of his aerial duels in the Premier League this season.

One key issue with making that switch would be Casemiro’s lack of recovery pace, however, with pundit Jamie Carragher stating last year that it looks as if the midfielder’s “legs have gone”.

The Wildcard Pick Godwill Kukonki

Godwill Kukonki

Even after seeing Heaven withdrawn, Amorim did not hesitate to introduce further teenage talents against Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side, with Chido Obi and debutant Harry Amass entering the fray late on.

The former Sporting CP boss admitted he has “so much fun” with regard to unleashing young prospects, with there a case to be made for replacing Heaven with another shining starlet, in the form of Godwill Kukonki.

The 6 foot 5 titan – who only recently turned 17 – has already made his way into the matchday squad this season under Amorim, albeit having, understandably, been made to wait for a first-team bow.

With Heaven now sidelined, it could well be the perfect time for the academy sensation to finally get his chance, with analyst Ben Mattinson previously earmarking Kukonki as a perfect fit for that left centre-back berth, while describing the teenager as a “dominant” and “commanding” presence despite his youth.

Amorim already stated back in December that the then 16-year-old was “ready” to be called into action as “he’s very adult to handle the demands of the Premier League”, a positive sign amid the left-footer’s chance of earning some game time.

The England youth international has made 18 appearances this season at both centre-back and left-back, chipping in with one goal and three assists in that time, albeit having been restricted to just a solitary U21 appearance thus far.

In The Pipeline

Despite still largely operating for the U18s, Amorim evidently feels Kukonki is ready for life at senior level, with the unfortunate loss of Heaven ensuring it could now be his turn to impress.

AC Milan make £33m bid for Chelsea star; confident deal will be done

AC Milan have now submitted a £33m offer for a “fantastic” Chelsea player, having identified him as a major target, and they are confident that a deal will be done, according to a new report.

Chelsea's summer transfer plans

The Blues have developed a reputation for stockpiling talented young players, and they are showing no signs of slowing down, having completed an out-of-window double swoop for Sporting CP’s Dario Essugo and Geovany Quenda.

It seems like the west Londoners have no plans to stop there, either, having already made an enquiry over a move for Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz, while they are also looking at AFC Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen.

As such, in order to fund their own transfer business, Enzo Maresca’s side may be forced to cash-in on some players during the summer window, and the manager is willing to sanction the permanent departure of Aston Villa loanee Axel Disasi.

Maresca is also ready to let Arsenal loanee Raheem Sterling leave on a permanent basis, with Juventus eyeing the 30-year-old, and he is not the only winger being targeted by one of Italy’s biggest clubs.

According to a report from Spain, AC Milan have now made a €40m (£33m) bid for Noni Madueke, having identified the 23-year-old as one of their main targets for the summer transfer window.

Chelsea's NoniMaduekein action with Brighton & Hove Albion's Tariq Lamptey

Milan are eyeing replacements for Rafael Leao, who has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, and they believe Madueke could be the perfect candidate.

The Italian giants are confident that a deal will be done for a fee of around £33m, and the huge competition for places at Stamford Bridge could make the move more likely.

"Fantastic" Madueke enjoying impressive campaign

It would be a shame to see the former PSV Eindhoven man leave this summer, given that the current campaign has been his best to date in a Chelsea shirt, picking up seven goals and three assists in the Premier League.

Maresca has also been impressed by the attacker’s contributions going forward, despite admitting there are still plenty of things he could improve.

The Blues are blessed with a lot of attacking options, but the forward was among their most consistent players prior to his recent hamstring injury, and he has admitted striking up a good relationship with Cole Palmer.

“He is cold and I am fire, so it mixes well. He has always got the ability to play the right pass at the right time, so it’s brilliant.”

As such, Chelsea should knock back the alleged bid from AC Milan, given that it doesn’t reflect Madueke’s value to the team.

Jasprit Bumrah 'bowling with full intensity', set to test fitness in practice matches

KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, meanwhile, have all begun batting in the nets as they continue their rehabilitation from injury

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jul-2023Jasprit Bumrah’s return to action could be imminent, with the fast bowler now “bowling with full intensity in the nets”, according to a BCCI medical update. Bumrah, whose last competitive cricket came in September 2022, has been undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru since undergoing back surgery in New Zealand in March this year.According to the BCCI’s release, Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna – another fast bowler recuperating from a stress fracture – are both bowling at full intensity.”The duo will now play some practice games, which the NCA will organise. The BCCI Medical Team is pleased with their progress and will make a final decision after assessing them following the practice games.”Related

Prasidh Krishna: 'As fast bowlers, you sign up for injuries and long days. It's part of our game'

Rishabh Pant's recovery progressing faster than expected

ESPNcricinfo understands the NCA is mindful of Bumrah’s workload, and has organised practice games, so that he can play under a physio’s supervision, rather than asking him to play in the 50-overs inter-zonal Deodhar Trophy. If he pulls up well in the practice games, he could be in contention for the three-match T20I series in Ireland, which is scheduled to run from August 18 to 23.After the Ireland tour, India will next be in action at the Asia Cup, from August 30 to September 17. In late September, they will host Australia for three ODIs, just before the ODI World Cup gets underway on October 5.

Batters KL Rahul (thigh) and Shreyas Iyer (lower back) are also making progress as they recuperate from their respective injuries. “They have resumed batting in the nets and are currently undergoing strength and fitness drills,” the release said. “The BCCI Medical Team is satisfied with their progress and will increase their intensity in terms of both skills and strength and conditioning in the coming days.”RIshabh Pant, who underwent knee ligament surgery after surviving a serious car crash last December, is also making “significant progress”, having resumed batting as well as keeping wicket in the nets. “He is currently following a fitness programme designed for him which includes strength, flexibility and running.”

The midfielder was speaking ahead of Bayern's opening game at the Club World Cup against Auckland City later today. The outspoken 30-year-old hinted at his displeasure with the club's transfer plans, suggesting the club needs to address their attacking options after the departures of Leroy Sane and Thomas Muller.

Muller, who will be playing his final games for Bayern at the Club World Cup, has hinted at a possible permanent stay in the US, while Sane has left to join Galatasaray, a move that surprised Kimmich. This mini-crisis in attack would have been staved off with Wirtz's signature, but Bayern were unable to match the £116m package put together by Liverpool.

WHAT KIMMICH SAID

Kimmich said: "You'll have to ask the club what their plans are. Of course, you have the feeling that we could do something – with Flo not coming, with Leroy leaving, with Thomas leaving. I was surprised that Sane is going to Turkey. I didn't expect that. But it's his decision and he'll have his reasons for it."

Kimmich will have to put his grievances with the club's recruitment strategy to one side, as Bayern begin their pursuit of the Club World Cup against semi-pro side Auckland City later on Sunday. The Bavarian giants are obviously among the favourites to win the tournament, but will have to be on their best to progress past a relatively group draw which also includes Benfica and Boca Juniors.

Kaverappa topples Pujara and Suryakumar as West Zone collapse in Duleep Trophy final

The manner in which he dismissed batters reinforced his progress from athletics to pace bowling

Shashank Kishore13-Jul-2023

Kaverappa’s unchanged spell jolted West Zone to take them from 97 for 1 to 116 for 5•PTI

Vidwath Kaverappa is 24 years old. He isn’t what you’d define as a tearaway quick. But he’s lively and can certainly leave batters in a daze with his quick arm-speed, zip and movement off the pitch both ways. It’s an incredible skill to have, all-natural and honed from his early days on the hockey field, from when he learnt to manoeuvre his wrists with the stick.Kaverappa only began bowling with the cricket ball seriously when he was 18, when he moved to Bengaluru from Coorg, the hockey heartland, to attend pre-university college. And being away from home meant that he felt the need to keep himself engaged to prevent being homesick. He chose to spend time on the cricket field, a decision he certainly isn’t regretting now.Why would he? The national selectors watched him dismiss Suryakumar Yadav, Sarfaraz Khan, and Cheteshwar Pujara on a leaden afternoon at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to crack open the Duleep Trophy final. West Zone were beginning to wrest control after dismissing South Zone for 213. At 97 for 1, Kaverappa struck the first of his four blows, by dismissing the well-set Harvik Desai and breaking the game open. Then, in an engaging passage where he bowled unchanged – except, of course, a couple of breaks came his way in the form of rain intervals – he transformed his figures to 12-3-22-4. More than the dismissals themselves, the manner in which he got them further reinforced how far he’s come along since starting out wanting to make a name in athletics, hockey, and even netball, where he represented Karnataka at the nationals.Suryakumar should’ve been out first ball to a perfectly laid trap of bowling short with a deep-square and fine leg in place. Vijaykumar Vyshak had him hooking only for Washington Sundar to put down a chance and palm the ball over the ropes for six. Next ball, Suryakumar top-edged a pull that landed short of fine leg. But three balls later, Kaverappa reaped the rewards for his patience by squaring Suryakumar up with a lifter that had him awkwardly fending to second slip where Hanuma Vihari was waiting to pouch it.Two overs later, after testing Sarfaraz Khan – on cue – with three short deliveries, Kaverappa had Sarfaraz glued to the crease and managed to dart a full-ish delivery back in to hit him on the knee roll. Kaverappa knew he’d had his man even before the umpire raised the finger. Sarfaraz reviewed in vain, and West Zone, who were in cruise control at 97 for 1 in reply to South’s 213, suddenly found themselves wobbling at 116 for 5.It helped Kaverappa that there was excellent control from the other end in the form of Vyshak, his Karnataka state mate. Vyshak went around the stumps and peppered Cheteshwar Pujara with short balls while Kaverappa went on a full-blown attack in a terrific exhibition of late reverse swing, bringing the ball back in. This would eventually account for Pujara’s wicket late in the day as he flicked a delivery on middle and leg to the short-square-leg position.Kaverappa would soon lead his team off the park, having delivered a telling spell that gave South Zone complete control of proceedings, with West tottering on 129 for 7, still trailing by 84 runs. That this comes hot on the heels of a five-for in the semi-final against North Zone makes the feat more impressive. But such performances aren’t a surprise for those who’ve watched him come up the ranks quickly. In the Ranji Trophy 2022-23, he picked up 30 wickets in eight games at an average of 20.43. He’s part of a pace battery alongside Vyshak and Vasuki Koushik that has helped Karnataka seamlessly transition from the heady swing-bowling days of R Vinay Kumar, Abhimanyu Mithun and S Aravind.Sure, the conditions were in favour of the bowlers, but the batters still needed to be forced into making mistakes, which Kaverappa did superbly. Irfan Pathan, who worked with the Under-19 players at the NCA, is “excited” at the prospect of watching Kaverappa develop further. Those watching from the stands, Shreyas Iyer among them, were certainly engrossed in watching a bowler wheel away with intensity.Kaverappa may go on to bowl better spells, but many years later, it’s entirely possible there may be a soft corner for the one he just delivered in the 2023-24 Duleep final.

Tongue, Pennington pivotal as Worcestershire beat Leicestershire by 100 runs

Leaving a county mixes the emotions of even the most clear-minded young cricketer. On the one hand you are, you hope, furthering your career. On the other, you are saying farewell to the coaches who may have played a vital role in your development, the team-mates with whom you have spent good and bad summers and the ground you called home. So imagine, if you will, the feelings of Dillon Pennington and Josh Tongue a week or so ago when they returned to New Road and told their colleagues they were leaving Worcestershire at the end of the current season. Both fast bowlers are taking the well-travelled road to Nottinghamshire, a county that seems to sign players from other counties as frequently as Imelda Marcos bought shoes. But both will, one assumes, be required by Worcestershire for the remainder of a season in which Brett D’Oliveira’s side have genuine promotion hopes. Such aspirations were boosted this morning when the visitors took just five overs to complete their 100-run victory over Leicestershire at Oakham School. The win takes Worcestershire level on points with their hosts this week and only Durham are currently above them in the Second Division table. And maybe it was particularly encouraging that both Pennington and Tongue played major roles in the triumph. Pennington did not bowl on the final morning of this game – only Tongue and Matthew Waite were required – but at least his match figures of 7 for 61 might have gone some way to assuage the affront caused when he recently undertook some publicity about his move to Trent Bridge while still a Worcestershire player.Tongue’s situation was even more complex. Earlier this week he was with the England squad at Emirates Old Trafford but having been released from Test Match commitments, he was free to join his county at Oakham, where he replaced Adam Finch and wreaked havoc.Having dismissed Peter Handscomb and Wiaan Mulder in the space of three balls on the second evening, Tongue was even more lickety-split about his work on this third morning His third ball tempted Rehan Ahmed into a loose drive that only succeeded in edging a catch to Gareth Roderick, an admirable cricketer who had a quietly impressive match behind the stumps.Having removed the only player capable of winning the game for Leicestershire, Tongue then sealed his side’s victory four overs later before many of the press pack had finished their morning coffee. Callum Parkinson was caught by Azhar Ali for 14 and Matt Salisbury yorked for a second-ball nought. The players trooped off the field at just gone 11.15 and some of them might have wondered why they had bothered to change into their whites.Within half an hour the accessories needed for county cricket were being dismantled, the pitch was being covered and Alan Richardson, Worcestershire’s head coach was reflecting on his side’s third victory of the season.”For us to be successful it is not going to be about one or two people, it is going to be a squad effort, with people stepping up at different times,” said Richardson. “In this game I thought Matthew Waite bowled extremely well, him and Joe [Leach] at that far end kept control of the game, allowing Adam Finch in the first innings, Josh in the second and Dillon throughout to do their stuff at the other end.””Obviously I’m disappointed that Josh and Dillon are leaving but at the same time they are still our players and they still want to perform for us for the rest of the season, to help us achieve our goals and having them in the team makes us better. We aren’t going to change our opinion on that just because they are leaving at the end of the season.”
