The Swiss took the lead after 28 minutes when Nadine Riesen rifled an effort in off the near post – an advantage they deserved after a promising first half during which Gerladine Reuteler smashed the crossbar amid a raucous atmosphere in Basel.

It was all change after the break, however, with Hegerberg drawing Norway level on 54 minutes when she beat Chelsea goalkeeper Livia Peng to a corner and powered home a header. Just four minutes later, Gemma Grainger's side took the lead as Switzerland defender Julia Stierli turned into her own net.

Hegerberg missed the opportunity to seal the victory when dragging a penalty wide of the post after a handball in the box, and moments later Switzerland had a spot-kick award of their own overturned by an automated offside decision.

Cecilie Fiskerstrand was called into action on a couple of occasions in the Norway goal but they held on and go top of Group A.

Norway's victory was their third against Switzerland in 2025. They had already overcome the same opponents by 2-1 and 1-0 scorelines in the Nations League earlier this year, before getting another one over on them on the first night of the Euros.

Hegerberg may have missed from 12 yards but her overall display still inspired Norway's comeback victory. The decorated forward made a fast start to the game, going close in the early stages, before powering through the Swiss defence to head home the equaliser from close range – her 50th international goal. The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner is key to Norway's chances and this was a promising start.

Norway put plenty of pressure on the Swiss backline in the second half and it was Stierli who eventually made the costly error. The centre-back had to play the ball with Hegerberg lurking and knocked it into her own net for a costly own goal.

Silk closes on 99* as Morris stands out on rapid return

Tasmania were in early trouble at the WACA but their captain stood firm for 235 deliveries

Tristan Lavalette15-Oct-2023Western Australia quick Lance Morris dismissed opener Caleb Jewell with his first ball of the Sheffield Shield season, but Tasmania recovered on day one at the WACA.After electing to bat in hot conditions, Tasmania were rocked by the dismissal of Jewell in the second over and slumped to 49 for 3 before captain Jordan Silk steadied his team to finish 99 not out at stumps.Related

Club World Cup XI: Cole Palmer and Chelsea's dominant win over PSG saves tournament, Real Madrid are in fact not back, and frenzied fans overdeliver throughout the CWC

GOAL US looks at the key takeaways from both Chelsea's win over PSG in the final, as well as the Club World Cup overall

Finished.

The Club World Cup has, officially, come to an end. And it's been a bit of a whirlwind month. The football was pretty good, the teams were pretty interested (and interesting). The storylines were compelling. And while we probably didn't learn much about each individual side, it served as a fine barometer in which to position the clubs across the global soccer hierarchy, which is kind of the point at the end of the day.

The final itself made for good viewing. Everyone thought Chelsea were going to get destroyed. And then they simply decided to, well, not get destroyed. Instead, they ran out deserved winners, outthinking and outplaying the best team in world football. It was, in truth, the final slice of jeopardy the tournament needed to go from an interesting idea to something that will last.

GOAL US presents the Club World Cup XI, with key observations from the final and tournament overall.

Getty Images Sport1The final delivers

Well, that was a good watch in the end. There were expectations, leading up to the final, that it could be an absolute Parisian battering. Chelsea were distinctly alright in the Premier League. PSG had spent the whole season smashing everyone. Only one way this could go, right? Wrong. The Blues were brilliant, played some lovely football, and dug in when they needed to. It made for a deserved 3-0 win and wonderful spectacle, all said.

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport2Cold Palmer is frigid

We mean this in a good way. Chelsea fans will tell you that Palmer has been among the best in the world for a while now. That's probably fair. But he simply took over against the Parisians and had a hand in all three goals. Every star player needs a big showing to make the world take notice. This was his.

AFP3Lucho gets out-tacticked

What do you do when the same formula that has won you a whole load of games stops working? It's an existential crisis of the highest order – even for top managers. And PSG's Luis Enrique didn't quite know what to do. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca came up with a clear plan, targeting PSG's left side and letting Palmer cook. It worked a charm, and the great Spainard's lasting takeaway was the fact that he decided to hit a Chelsea player at full time. Not great.

Getty Images Sport4Are Chelsea good now?

Uhhhh maybe? This was kinda everyone's question heading into the tournament. Could Chelsea do any damage, or are they just a pretty average Champions League team? Answer: damage was done. Does this mean they're good? Well, you can't be mediocre and beat PSG. Maybe that's all you need to know.

Ravi Bishnoi rises to the top of T20I bowling rankings

India legspinner displaces Rashid Khan at the top on the back of a Player-of-the-Series show against Australia

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Dec-2023Ravi Bishnoi is the new No. 1 bowler in T20I cricket, on the back of his Player-of-the-Series show against Australia. He had claimed nine wickets in five games in that series at 18.22. That capped a meteoric rise in T20I cricket for the 23-year-old legspinner: since debuting in February 2022, he has 34 T20I wickets at 17.38, with a strike rate of 14.5 and an economy just over 7.Bishnoi displaces Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan at the top, and also pushes Wanindu Hasaranga, Adil Rashid and Maheesh Theekshana down a spot to complete the all-spin top five. There were no other significant changes in the rankings. In the series against Australia, India gave Bishnoi a fair amount of bowling the powerplay, and it paid off – both in terms of wickets and controlling runs. They will hope Bishnoi, who bowls more googlies than legbreaks, can keep his form going as they prepare for the T20 World Cup which will be played in the West Indies – where spinners can come in particularly handy – and the USA in June next year. India have only six T20Is scheduled from now till that showpiece event, so there’s not much room for experimentation, but they will take confidence from the 4-1 result over Australia.

Taijul's six-for gives Bangladesh first home Test win against New Zealand

Taijul Islam scripted one of Bangladesh’s finest Test victories, as he took six wickets in the second innings to complete a 10-wicket match haul to help beat New Zealand by 150 runs in Sylhet. The home side needed 86 minutes to take the remaining three wickets of the visitors on the fifth morning. New Zealand added 68 runs, but Taijul took two of the three wickets that fell. Overnight on 113 for 7 with Daryl Mitchell as the only one from the top six surviving the rout, New Zealand needed a miracle to survive on the final day. It was also the first time in the game that the pitch offered uneven bounce.Mitchell was watchful during his stay in the morning and also reached his ninth Test fifty. But his resistance ended when he couldn’t connect a sweep off Nayeem Hasan properly, giving Taijul a tumbling catch halfway from deep square leg.Related

Tim Southee and Ish Sodhi then resisted for the next 52 deliveries it ended when Southee gave a low catch to midwicket off Taijul’s delivery. Southee struck a couple of sixes in his 24-ball 34 to take his tally to 85 sixes in Tests, which took him past Vivian Richards’ record of 84, and he is now ninth on the list of batters with most Test sixes. The end came when Ish Sodhi tried to block a Taijul delivery that turned a tad but ended up giving silly mid-off a straightforward catch. He had lasted 91 balls for his 22.Bangladesh are now on 12 points in the World Test Championship points table. Their only other WTC win was also against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui at the start of 2022.New Zealand’s hopes of a win diminished on day four. Shoriful had Tom Latham edging his pitched-up delivery that moved away slightly and Nurul Hasan dived low to his left to remove the opener for a duck. Kane Williamson, who had scored his 29th Test hundred in the first innings, was going to be key to New Zealand’s approach on the fourth day.But Taijul then got the prized wicket of Williamson, who was dragged forward on the defensive push, only for the spinning delivery to beat the inside edge and hit his front leg. Williamson opted for the review but found out quickly that he was plumb in front.Henry Nicholls top-edged a sweep off Mehidy Hasan Miraz and was caught by Nayeem at short fine leg. Devon Conway lasted more than an hour for his 22 before giving Taijul his second wicket. Shahadat Hossain took the simple catch at short leg after the left-hander charged the left-arm spinner and got an inside edge onto his pad. Tom Blundell looked in trouble from the onset and didn’t last too long. Taijul found vicious turn and bounce to have Blundell squared up and feather the ball to the keeper. The collapse continued in the 35th over when Nayeem trapped Glenn Phillips lbw for 12, before Taijul also trapped Kyle Jamieson lbw.Bangladesh had set New Zealand a 332-run target in the fourth innings, after getting bowled out for 338 runs in their second innings. Najmul Hossain Shanto’s century had put the hosts in the driver’s seat and Taijul drove them to the finish line.

Muzumdar: 'There is no compromise on fielding and fitness'

“We need to play a certain brand of cricket, which we have been known for. Fearless cricket is something I’ve always advocated”

S Sudarshanan05-Dec-20236:58

‘We are seeing the positive effects of the WPL on India’s squad’

In his first press conference as the head coach of India, Amol Muzumdar picked fitness and fielding as areas of top priority ahead of the women’s T20I series opener against England.”Fielding and fitness are of highest priority,” Muzumdar said on the eve of the first T20I. “There is no compromise on fielding and fitness. There will be lot of camps that will be happening post this series and getting into the next season. There will be a lot of cricket played either at the NCA or somewhere or the other.”More exposure, fitness and fielding will be my top priority. The fringe players – the new generation coming through – will get equal opportunities. These are the prime things that we will take forward after this series.”Related

New Test dawn for India, but focus firmly on road to T20 World Cup

India kicked off preparations for the multi-format series against England and Australia – including two one-off Tests – mid-November at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. After a four-day practice match, they had a three-day camp before touching down at the Wankhede on December 2. Skill aspects aside, focus was strained in on the fitness aspects with parameters set.”Goals have already been set,” Muzumdar said. “We already had some [fitness] test done when we were at the NCA in Bengaluru. [The parameters] are already in place and we follow it very rigorously and religiously moving forward. There will be three tests in the season, that is already being followed.”Muzumdar called for the batters to play fearlessly, starting from Shafali Verma. In T20Is in 2023, India’s openers have had a fifty-run partnership only twice. Shafali averages 20.45 in 11 outings this year and has a strike rate of 112.50 – well below her career strike rate of 130.58.”We need to play a certain brand of cricket, which we have been known for,” Muzumdar said. “Shafali and Jemimah [Rodrigues] are both a very important cogs in the wheel. I would like them to continue what they have been doing.”Fearless cricket is something I have always advocated. We would be playing that brand of cricket.”It is the first time India are playing a T20I at the Wankhede and the opening clash against England will be only the second women’s T20I at the venue. Muzumdar, who played most of his domestic cricket for Mumbai, was nostalgic talking about the venue but cautioned against getting complacent.”Coming back to Wankhede, I am starting a new role at the home ground,” he said. “I have played all my cricket since childhood here. [It is] great to start the series here at Wankhede. [We are] familiar with the conditions but cannot be complacent as every game has its own challenges.”India have won only seven of the 27 T20Is against England, but Muzumdar brushed aside the numbers.”We have decided to leave the statistics and whatever has happened behind us. We are looking forward to a fresh start. The numbers are there to be seen, but these girls and the team are looking forward to the season ahead. We are not going to go back in history — of course it is important — but at the same time, it is also important to look forward to the season ahead.”Harmanpreet Kaur and Amol Muzumdar will combine as captain and coach for their first series together•PTI

DRS a first for a women’s bilateral series in IndiaThe series will be the first to have the Decision Review System (DRS) for a women’s bilateral series in India. Each team will have two reviews in the T20Is and three per innings in the one-off Test.DRS was first introduced in women’s cricket at the 2017 ODI World Cup but it was inconsistent in bilaterals. The Women’s T20 World Cup in 2018 was the first T20 edition to have the review system in place. For bilateral series, it is up to the host boards to have the broadcast facilities for DRS.While England have had DRS in their home series for a while, Muzumdar said India have a “DRS committee” in place to deal with what he called “important aspect of the game”.”We have already had a discussion on this. We do have a DRS committee in place. It is an important aspect of the game. It could be a game-changer or a series-changer. Every small little aspect will be taken care of. We already have a committee in place to deal with that.”England captain Heather Knight, on the other hand, laid bare the key members of the on-field DRS decisions, having used to the system in the women’s Hundred as well.”We are really used to playing with DRS both internationally and domestically,” she said. “Myself, the bowler and [wicketkeeper] Amy Jones are really key cogs in terms of information. Not sure I am the best at it, don’t think if I have an amazing record at DRS. Yeah, one of those you trust your bowler and keeper to try and work it out.”
