Keith Downie shares update on Isak's Newcastle future after Ekitike bid

Having already welcomed Anthony Elanga, Newcastle United are now reportedly “pushing” to sign Hugo Ekitike in a deal worth over £60m this summer.

Securing their second signing of the summer and their biggest so far following Antonio Cordero’s initial arrival, Newcastle will be glad to have got Elanga over the line. The Swede enjoyed an excellent campaign with Nottingham Forest last time out – scoring six goals as well as assisting a further 12 in all competitions – and will now form one of the Premier League’s deadliest trios alongside Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

Speaking for the first time since welcoming Elanga, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe told the club website: “I’m delighted to welcome Anthony to Newcastle United. He has been a key target for us so I’m delighted to secure him at this early part of pre-season.

“He is an exciting talent with attributes that make him a unique attacking threat. His pace, energy and ability to create and score goals will strengthen us and complement the way we want to play. Anthony is hungry to develop even further with us and to achieve success here, and we’re all looking forward to working with him.”

However, after spending around £55m to reinforce Newcastle’s frontline, PIF still reportedly have unfinished business in the summer transfer window. Recent reports have linked the Magpies with moves for the likes of Giorgio Scalvini, who would be an impressive defensive addition, while a move for James Trafford has been on the cards for some time.

What’s more, fresh reports are now claiming that those at St James’ Park are “pushing” to welcome another talented attacking option.

Downie: What Hugo Ekitike bid means for Alexander Isak

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are now “pushing” to sign Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt after submitting a bid worth over €70m (£61m). Jumping ahead of the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea in the race to sign the Frenchman, the Magpies could be about to form quite the strike partnership between Ekitike and Isak.

Keith Downie has since added comment on the concerns around Isak’s future, speaking to Sky Sports live from outside St James’ Park on Tuesday morning.

While the reporter does confirm the Magpies want the Sweden superstar to sign a new contract and hope to begin talks soon, he claims the club will be in a “completely different scenario” next summer if a new deal is not signed and may well be getting their ducks in a row for Isak to leave in 2026.

There will be some concerns over how Ekitike underperformed his expected goals total last season, but keeping hold of the clinical Isak – at least for now – would instantly nullify those concerns.

The forward’s rise is one that former Reims manager Oscar Garcia saw coming from the start of his career, having told reporters: “There is something very special about him. He’s young, and he has the quality to become a very good player. He’s a young man with a lot of quality but also a lot to improve on, but he works hard in training.”

A dream for Bruno: Newcastle likely to see £50m bid accepted to sign new CM

As Newcastle United look to bolster their midfield options, the Mapgies are reportedly set to see a £50 million bid accepted to sig a great “leader”.

ByBen Gray Jul 15, 2025

Now, that “special” player could be on his way to Newcastle to stand next to Isak in one of the best attacks that the Premier League has to offer.

Elanga will love him: Newcastle open first talks to sign "the next Mbappe"

This week, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe finally signed a new right-sided forward after several transfer windows of fruitless efforts.

Anthony Elanga’s much-covered £55m switch from Nottingham Forest to Tyneside has provided Newcastle with genuine quality and athleticism to challenge in the Premier League and abroad, Champions League-bound as they are.

But there are still gaps in the Magpies squad which demand attention. Namely, Howe has been searching for a striker to challenge and complement Alexander Isak.

A range of names have been mooted, but there’s one man above all else who would send shockwaves through English football and beyond, should he wind up on Tyneside this summer.

The latest on Newcastle's search for a striker

Newcastle have been knocked back once or twice this summer, but then Howe has instilled a winning mentality and a togetherness at St. James’ Park, which allows the club to bounce back from adversity.

Brighton’s Joao Pedro was the top target to add some depth and dynamism up front, but he’s signed for Chelsea in a deal worth £60m.

The likes of Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, valued at £50m, have since been touted as an alternative, but Newcastle appear to have their eyes on a bigger prize.

And now, the Telegraph have corroborated news from Fabrizio Romano that Newcastle are targeting Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, in spite of the French forward’s £86m release clause.

Newcastle are looking to beat Liverpool to Ekitike’s signature, with the 23-year-old having previously been on the radar in 2022, when a £33m deal was agreed with Reims before Paris Saint-Germain hijacked the transfer.

The Telegraph reveal that Newcastle have already held talks with the player’s reps, making them aware of their desire to sign him and now hope they can agree a fee with the Bundesliga club.

Why Newcastle want Hugo Ekitike

You might think that Newcastle’s interest in Ekitike speaks of the looming sale of Isak, but this isn’t the case. United need another high-level goalscorer, and this would be a significant statement of intent.

Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike

Ekitike, while young, proved his worth in Germany last season, scoring 22 goals and supplying 12 assists across all competitions. His complete attacking performances and high-speed running even led journalist Graeme Bailey to describe him as “the next Mbappe”, a comparison unlikely to be lost on this ambitious Toon side.

He has the physicality and sharpness to succeed in the Premier League, no doubt, especially when considering he would be playing with wide men like Anthony Gordon and new recruit Elanga.

Across his two campaigns with Forest, Elanga, 23, has racked up 20 assists in the Premier League, very much the “electric” presence, as he has been described by Statman Dave, needed to add a new dimension to Howe’s project.

Elanga’s pace and focus on creativity could play to Ekitike’s strengths. The Frankfurt star might be multi-faceted, with eye-catching link-up and athletic qualities, but at his core he’s a goalscorer, having ranked among the top 7% of centre-forwards across Europe’s top five leagues last season for shots taken (3.74) per 90, as per FBref.

And, in turn, Ekitike’s natural bent for playmaking and team fluency will allow Elanga to approach his craft with more versatility, using overlapping runs to find space to shoot on goal himself, for example.

Ultimately, Ekitike’s will be a signing that proves incredibly difficult to pull off, but if Newcastle manage to beat off the competition and bring him over, there’s every chance that he, Elanga and the rest will lead the club toward new-found heights, beyond even the elation of the 2024/25 campaign.

A new Tonali: Newcastle likely to see £34m bid accepted for "monster" CM

Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign a former Premier League star this summer

ByRoss Kilvington Jul 13, 2025

He'd be unstoppable with Tanaka: Leeds make offer to sign "complete" star

It has been a busy summer already for newly promoted side Leeds United. The 2024/25 campaign was sensational for Daniel Farke’s side, racking up over 100 points and winning the Championship title, and, of course, promotion back to the Premier League.

Leeds are looking to break the streak of newly promoted sides getting immediately relegated, as we have seen the last two seasons. With that in mind, they have been busy in the transfer market already, signing defender Jaka Bijol from Udinese and striker Lukas Nmecha from Wolfsburg on a free transfer.

With two parts of the pitch already strengthened, Leeds are now seemingly ready to turn their attention to the midfield, if recent reports are true.

Leeds' midfield target

One man who the Elland Road side have on their list for a new midfielder is young Anderlecht midfielder Mario Stroeykens, with talkSPORT reporting that they ‘hold an interest’ in the Belgian. However, with West Ham United also in the race, it is unclear if they will sign him.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

A deal that is far more advanced is for Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra. According to a report from Africa Foot, the Senegal international is now ‘the subject of an official offer’ from the 49ers Group.

The Yorkshire outfit have reportedly sent a bid of £24m to the French side for Diarra, after initially having a bid of £21.3m rejected earlier in the window.

Leeds have also offered him personal terms, thought to be a three-year deal if he is to make the move to Elland Road.

How Leeds' midfielder would shape up with Diarra and Tanaka

21-year-old Senegal international Diarra would be joining Leeds with a great pedigree. After coming through Strasbourg’s youth system, he has gone on to become the club captain, showing excellent leadership qualities at such a young age.

Habib Diarra for Strasbourg against PSG.

Last term, the Strasbourg number 19 was a key player for his side, as they qualified for the UEFA Conference League next season. He featured in 30 top-flight games, scoring four times and grabbing five assists in that time.

Diarra is an extremely versatile midfielder, with football analyst Ben Mattinson posting on X that whether you need a “6, 8, 10, Habib Diarra can do it”. Indeed, last term for Strasbourg, he played both as a number 10 and a number eight. As Mattinson said, he is a “complete midfielder”.

Senegal's Habib Diarra in action against England's Eberechi Eze.

The 21-year-old bagged for his country in their recent friendly against England at the City Ground, showing off his attacking nous. It was a smart run in behind the Three Lions’ defence, curving his run to get space, before carrying into the six-yard box and slotting into the far corner.

One thing Leeds fans can perhaps look forward to if they sign Diarra is the partnership that could develop between him and Ao Tanaka. The Japan international was a key player under Farke last season, after joining from Fortuna Düsseldorf.

The 26-year-old, who is a defensive midfielder by trade, chipped in with five goals and two assists in 43 Championship appearances. Despite his excellent performances, he never really found a permanent partner, but perhaps Diarra could be that player.

With Tanaka’s ability from a defensive standpoint, it could unleash Diarra and allow him to venture forward to try and impact the game in more advanced areas. The stats are there, via FBref, that certainly support this theory.

For example, Tanaka averaged 3.97 tackles and interceptions and 5.9 ball recoveries per 90 minutes last season, showing just how efficient he was at sitting deeper and breaking up play. As for Diarra, he averaged 1.03 key passes and 0.31 goal-creating actions each game. This certainly highlights just how effective he can be in and around the penalty box, as does his goals and assist tally from last term.

The partnership that Leeds fans could expect to see between Tanaka and Diarra is hugely exciting. They could become unplayable together, with the progression of the Japan star feeding the Strasbourg skipper in the final third, who would have less defensive responsibility.

For just £24m, this could be a bargain for the Yorkshire outfit, and one that would really upgrade their midfield.

West Ham in talks to sign £35m Spurs target who's tempted by Hammers move

West Ham United have now opened talks to sign a “phenomenal” Tottenham Hotspur target, who is tempted by a move to the London Stadium this summer, according to a report.

West Ham looking to get revenge for Kudus

It will, of course, be a huge disappointment that Mohammed Kudus decided to join one of West Ham’s biggest rivals, and the forward has continued to make the headlines since sealing a move across the capital.

Upon arriving in north London, Kudus insisted he “only wanted Spurs” in his first interview, and there could be justified anger about the way in which he went about getting the move in the first place, having allegedly refused to return to pre-season training.

Losing a player of the winger’s quality to one of their bitter rivals will be a bitter pill for Hammers fans to swallow, but there has now been a suggestion that they could get instant revenge by swooping in and signing one of Tottenham’s transfer targets.

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), West Ham have now entered negotiations to sign Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz, and they are more determined to get a deal over the line than any other club in the race for his signature.

Luiz is also on Spurs’ transfer shortlist, with reports suggesting the midfielder would be keen on a move to north London, however, it has now been revealed that he is tempted by a move to the London Stadium, with the Irons currently working to find an agreement.

A deal will not be cheap, with Juventus setting an asking price of €40m (£35m), but the Italian club are also open to more creative ways of getting the Brazilian off the books, with an expensive loan also on the table, including an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met.

"Phenomenal" Luiz could be statement signing for West Ham

Of course, it will be difficult to compete with Tottenham, given that Champions League football is on offer in north London next season, but the Juventus maestro could be a real statement signing if the Hammers are able to get a deal over the line.

Crucially, the former Aston Villa man is already proven in the Premier League, catching pundit Lee Hendrie’s eye during his spell at Villa Park.

Douglas Luiz at the Club World Cup with Juventus.

Hendrie said: “He continues to have an absolutely unbelievable season doesn’t he, scoring goals? But that’s his bread and butter, getting back, doing the horrible side of the game and having quality amongst that is absolutely phenomenal.”

As pointed out by Hendrie, the 27-year-old is a very well-rounded midfielder, having particularly impressed going forward in his final season with Villa, regularly chipping in with goals and assists in all competitions.

A large squad of India probables, minus those featuring in the Women’s Hundred or Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL), will assemble in Bengaluru this week for a fitness and conditioning camp at the National Cricket Academy, as part of their preparation for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 slated to be held between October 3 to 20.The Indian team doesn’t have any international cricket between now and the start of the World Cup, even as the India A team is in Australia for a multi-format series. The BCCI has also engaged a sports psychologist to conduct sessions for the team, in line with a request the captain Harmanpreet Kaur has made repeatedly, to help players open up on their challenges and work with to combat pressure and mental fatigue. The squad that will be picked for the World Cup will then reconvene early September for an intense skill-based camp as part of their final run into the tournament, which India will be attempting to win for the first time after having faltered on a number of occasions under pressure, most-notably against Australia in the final [2020] and semi-finals [2022].2:51

Women’s Asia Cup review: What can India do to strengthen their bowling unit?

Shreyanka Patil, who picked up a finger injury during the Women’s Asia Cup last month, is believed to be on track to make a full recovery before the tournament and will be part of this conditioning camp. There’s guarded optimism around Yastika Bhatia, who is expected to continue with her rehabilitation at the NCA for a posterior cruciate ligament injury in her left knee.Bhatia’s absence has led to the team management experimenting to find a stable No. 3. D Hemalatha and Uma Chetry, who made her debut at the Asia Cup, have been tried at that position. But the uncertainty around the host venue, in the wake of security challenges in Bangladesh due to civil unrest, will also put the spotlight on the pace bowling group.Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar have been the regulars in recent times, with Arundhati Reddy pushing for a regular berth on the back of impressive performances in the domestic season for Kerala as well as for the Delhi Capitals in the WPL. Among other pacers in the fray are Meghna Singh, currently on tour in Australia, and Titas Sadhu. The fast-bowling group will be put through their paces by Troy Cooley, the former Australia fast bowler, who is one of the bowling consultants at the NCA. The group is also expected to play a few intra-squad games in September prior to their departure for the World Cup.

Porter, Harmer raid Nottinghamshire before Hameed offers resistance

Jamie Porter and Simon Harmer shared nine first-innings wickets as Essex skittled Nottinghamshire for 93 on a morning of utter carnage at Chelmsford.Seam bowler Porter took his third five-wicket haul of the season, and second in consecutive Vitality County Championship matches, to finish with 5 for 35, season’s best figures that included three wickets in five balls.Simon Harmer also claimed his best bowling figures of the summer with 4 for 16 from 12.5 overs and then took the first two wickets of Nottinghamshire’s second innings. Allied with a season’s best 51 in Essex’s 457, it was a welcome return to form for the off-spinning all-rounder who has been dogged by persistent injury.Nottinghamshire’s inability to cope with Porter’s pace and Harmer’s guile on a wicket that had become less benign overnight, left them 364 runs adrift on first innings. When they followed on, captain Haseeb Hameed led the fightback with a patiently crafted unbeaten 100 from 151 balls and put on an unbroken 131 with Joe Clarke (62 not out) for the third wicket. At the close, Nottinghamshire were 180 for 2, still 184 runs from making Essex bat again. It was the perfect repost from Essex on the day the ECB confirmed their 12-point deduction after opening batsman Feroze Khushi was found to have used an illegally-sized bat in the reverse fixture at Trent Bridge in April. It does, however, end their dwindling hopes of challenging for the title.Nottinghamshire’s first innings fell apart spectacularly on a sunny, though chilly morning as 48 for 1 became 93 all out, with nine wickets clattering in 87 minutesThere was no sign of what was to come in the first half-hour as Ben Slater and Freddie McCann added 31 to their overnight score. But then Harmer came on and struck first ball when McCann moved forward half-cock and was the first of five LBWs in the morning. Harmer had two of the next three wickets to fall as Ben Slater was snaffled at slip and Jack Haynes was the second lbw victim. In between Porter replaced the unlucky Sam Cook, who had discomforted McCann on several occasions and might have had something to show for a venomous opening spell had Matt Critchley not dropped Joe Clarke at gulley. It did not prove too expensive as Porter had Clarke pinned lbw in his first over.Nottinghamshire’s South African wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne came out all guns blazing, reverse-sweeping Harmer for four and driving Porter over the long-off boundary. However, his nine-ball cameo ended on 12 when he drove Porter uppishly into the covers.Lyndon James departed to a stunning full-length dive low to his left by Michael Pepper to spark Porter’s three-quick-wicket burst. Luke Fletcher, first ball, and Liam Patterson-White fell lbw before Harmer wrapped things up by having Rob Lord caught at bat-pad.Following on, Hameed and Slater looked comfortable for a dozen overs after lunch before Slater misjudged a delivery from Harmer that beat the outside edge and bowled him. The teenaged McCann was bamboozled for a second time by Harmer, the sixth player to go lbw during the day.Hameed was particularly strong off the back-foot, punching the ball through extra cover for a succession of boundaries, and reached his sixth fifty-plus score of the season from 70 balls. That Nottinghamshire made a better fist of it in the second innings was illustrated by the fact they had overhauled their first-innings total by tea for the loss of just two wickets.Hameed found a willing partner in Clarke and the pair steadied things by putting the first fifty of their stand in 14 overs, taking another 15 for the second fifty. As confidence grew, Clarke came down the wicket and smashed Harmer over midwicket for six on the way to reaching his half-century from 105 balls.A quick single took Hameed to three-figures just before stumps off his 151st ball.

Fatima Sana's Pakistan look to hit India hard with improved power game

Pakistan’s six-hitting has seen plenty of growth over recent months thanks to an increased focus on range-hitting under coach Mohammad Wasim

Shashank Kishore05-Oct-2024Fatima Sana, Pakistan’s captain, doesn’t want to her team to feel any pressure ahead of their match against India, but believes it’s inevitable given the magnitude of the occasion.Pakistan opened the tournament with a resounding win over Sri Lanka, and are riding a recent wave of success in terms of development, not just results. For example: Pakistan posted 181, their highest T20I total, during their recent series at home against South Africa. In that innings, they hit as many as six sixes, significantly higher than their average of one every 19 overs between the 2023 and 2024 T20 World Cups.Related

October 6 at the T20 World Cup: India meet Pakistan; Scotland take on injury-affected West Indies

India's early setback set to raise the temperature of Pakistan clash

Mohammad Wasim, their current coach, has incorporated some best practices from the Pakistan Super League, such as the influx of data wherever available, as well as an improved focus on range-hitting that was on full view in that match against South Africa, with Sana at the center of it herself.Six-hitting comes with a certain mindset that Sana believes is slowly being ingrained into Pakistan’s batting DNA. She believes it wasn’t always that way.”If you look at the last series of South Africa, a lot of our girls have improved in power hitting,” Sana said. “In the last South Africa series, our team hit six sixes in one match.”I think the girls believe that even if the fielders are standing behind, if they hit, they can go for six. It’s a good thing that all the girls are confident in this. Personally, I used to bat a lot before, but I didn’t know if I could hit or not. But with that belief now it’s become a lot easier.”Fatima Sana scored 30 off 20 in Pakistan’s win over Sri Lanka•ICC/Getty ImagesWasim has had the support of Hanif Malik, whom he worked with at Islamabad United, to help with the range-hitting. Sana believes that adopting different methods to try and improve – irrespective of results – is a good starting point.”First of all, we always wanted to play attacking cricket,” Sana said. “I have been watching that whichever team we played against – we’ve [tried to play] attacking cricket. As a bowler, I used to feel that whoever used to bowl against us, used to hit us from the first ball. I wanted our team to have batters who can punish the bowler from the first ball. We have worked a lot on this and you will see the result soon hopefully.”Sana believes the best way to bring about this change on the batting front is to lead by example herself. On Thursday, Sana’s crucial 20-ball 30 provided Pakistan the late impetus they needed to apply the squeeze on Sri Lanka.Ahead of the India match, Sana was among the first in for range-hitting with the coaching staff, spending considerable time on her backswing and head position while striking the ball. These improvements come from a deep desire to be the “number one allrounder.””I always wanted to be the number one all-rounder – because obviously bowling is a team sport, but the team wins when you are good at it all – even when you are good on the field,” she said. “So that’s why I was trying to prove myself always in helping the team win. So, I think that was the only challenge for me.”That I should take my batting along. Sir [Wasim] has played a big role in this. He has helped me a lot. Our power-hitting coach, he has helped a lot of girls. I think all the credit goes to him because he has given us the belief that you can become an all-rounder. So he gets the credit for this.”

Newcastle now plotting £40m move to sign "outrageous" ex-Arsenal striker

After missing out on Hugo Ekitike, Newcastle United are now reportedly plotting a fresh move to sign a 27-goal forward for Eddie Howe this summer.

Newcastle working on Ekitike alternatives

Whilst they have at least managed to welcome Anthony Elanga, there’s no denying that it’s been an incredibly frustrating summer for Newcastle so far. They first found themselves linked with moves for Joao Pedro and Bryan Mbeumo, only for their targets to join Chelsea and Manchester United respectively.

Then, their attention turned towards the talented Ekitike and it looked as though he was there for the taking. The Magpies submitted an opening bid and were reportedly preparing a second before Liverpool came swooping in to seal the Frenchman’s signature. Now, for the umpteenth time this summer, Newcastle are back to square one.

The next name on their list on that front seems to be Yoane Wissa. The Brentford striker has reportedly left the Bees’ pre-season camp amid speculation that both Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle are interested, leading to an opening bid from those at St James’ Park.

With Tottenham also interested, Newcastle will be wary that they could yet miss out on another target in what would only be the latest blow in a summer to forget. But that concern means that Wissa isn’t the only name on their shortlist of Ekitike alternatives.

Alongside the Brentford star, the likes of Benjamin Sesko and even Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez have been mentioned. If the Magpies want to exact revenge on the Reds, then one way would be to sign Nunez before finally getting the best out of him.

Their new Ba: Newcastle confident of signing "remarkable" £50m star

Newcastle are weighing up a move for Brentford’s star man after move for Ekitike falls through.

Of course, however, that move would come with no guarantee that the South American would finally spark into life. Instead, Newcastle should focus on a Ligue 1 star who scored 27 goals last season.

Newcastle now plotting Biereth move

According to Caught Offside, Newcastle are now plotting a summer swoop to sign Mika Biereth in a deal worth £40m. The AS Monaco forward enjoyed an excellent campaign last time out – scoring 27 goals in all competitions after adding to his initial tally at SK Sturm Graz in the first-half of the campaign.

Stepping up to Ligue 1 level also proved little trouble for the 22-year-old, who scored 13 goals in just 16 games to steal further headlines. Now, six months on from joining Monaco, the Dane could be on his way back to the Premier League.

Dubbed “outrageous” by scout Jacek Kulig, Biereth is not a name that most Premier League fans will know well, but one that Arsenal and Fulham fans should be familiar with.

The forward initially came through at Craven Cottage before making his way to the famous Hale End academy. Ultimately, however, opportunities came few and far between for Biereth, who has since thrived elsewhere.
